Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

I have some new questions :

1. Is it possible to win a game by eliminating all rivals when there are more than 6 or 7 civilizations? Must be one difficult job for those who can do it.

2. I've tried Rhye's and Fall and TAM and really liked them. Is there any other mods that have this "historic" feel that you could suggest me?

Thanks!

hello, please answer my question, thanks in advance! :)

i just got vanilla Civ4 from D2d. Says to get activation code from Download page. Where is this download page?? i search searc search....nothing.

I have never used D2d but it sounds that the internet page that you've used to download the game had a code noted on it.

Yes. Like that. Though you have to have the Civil Service tech for this to work.
F

And farms can be linked diagonally instead of only horizontally and vertically like in civ2.

Yes, it very much possible. There are quite some players who like an aggressive approach. If you practice this approach a bit, you'll be more than capable to conquer several civilisations. And as you become larger, conquering the next civilization becomes easier due to a larger production bases which can be used to build units. On the larger maps, you'll have to conquer more territory than on the smaller maps which typically takes a bit longer.

I have a question.

As a new player who played about 2 games, what victory should i go for? I have tried to play for a Culture victory, but it didnt go very well... Is there a type of victory that is more suit for a new players (except time victory)?

How does one delete the saved game files that one does not need any more? I have had said problem on previous Civ games installed over the years too! Please do remit help if one is able. Thank You in advance is customary. CROSSHAIR.....

If it's like me, go in "My documents", "My Games", "Beyond the Sword", "Saves", and then you can delete the saves you don't want anymore.

Just change your level. The opponents level doesn't matter; they're Noble by default.

You're right, many new players go for a time victory, but more experienced players prefer other victory conditions; you are rewarded with bigger scores for finishing earlier.

Diplomacy is probably the easiest victory, as it doesn't require any complicated campaigns, research, or builds. You research one tech (either Theology or Mass Media), build one thing (either the Apostolic Palace or the United Nations--in fact, technically, you don't have to build them yourself). Then be on good terms with enough of the AI civs to win a diplomatic victory vote (though winning this way with the AP does require your state religion to be present in every civ on the map). If you play a couple of games and watch what +/- points you get when you hover over a leaderhead, you'll quickly get a good idea what makes the AI happy and what doesn't. Remember you don't have to be friends with everybody, just with enough decent-sized civs to win a vote.

The second easiest is probably a cultural win. You just need three cities with a lot of cultural buildings and food to run artist specialists, crank up the culture slider, and if you can keep the AI from attacking you, (winning by diplomacy should be good experience for this) you should be home free.

The third easiest victory for a newcomer is the space race. It doesn't require quite as much strategic thinking and micromanagement as a military (domination or conquest) victory, and does not require as much insight into the AI's workings as a diplomatic victory. In fact, an argument can be made that the space race is the easiest, because in many ways it doesn't matter as much, like it does in a cultural or diplomatic victory attempt, how you've played the game to that point; you can neglect culture or diplomacy for most of the game and still win the space race. In fact, as a civ veteran, I found space to be the easiest victory, since I was used to the concept from previous versions of Civ, whereas diplomatic and cultural victories were new to me. In many ways it's pretty cut and dried: in the late game, just research the techs that enable space ship components, build them, and launch. You only have to be just adept enough at diplomacy and/or military to keep the AI from interfering.

I would also add that I consider these three victories to be the easiest because they're the only ones I've seen the AI win, and in my opinion, anything the AI can do, a human can do, and better. ;)

man multiplayer is brutal, the patience required is beyond my ability. its still a hell lot more interesting then single player though :<

My own (admittedly limited) experience with MP wasn't that it was more interesting than SP, just different.

Yes, the patience required when you're only playing 1 turn a day is substantial, but I found that the biggest problem wasn't maintaining patience but maintaining focus. I had too much time to dither over every decision and therefore wound up vacillating between them and making no real decisions at all.

In addition, while I fully acknowledge that a human player is craftier, more capable, and more devious than the AI can ever be, I found that MP games usually (though not always) degenerate into slugfests with the more subtle aspects of the game being tossed by the wayside. I enjoy Civ because it isn't just a war game, but in MP it usually is. One of the commentators in my ALCs once summed up his (and my own) approach to Civ thus: "I war so I can build". I find in MP that you can't ever sit back and build, though, unless it's building more units to protect yourself from the next backstabbing.

I'm not saying MP is better or worse than SP, just that it's different, and each suits certain personality types and play styles better than others.

Is it possible to cancel turn? By canceling a turn i mean if i accidently make a wrong movement order for a unit to a spot i regret, is it possible?

Go into CivilizationIV.ini file and set AutoSaveInterval to 1. This will autosave every turn. (You may want to increase the MaxAutoSaves as well if you like going back and trying different strategies.)

With so much micromanagement to perform in this game, mistakes will be made. Sometimes I just live with them, but sometimes a stray mouse click causes a huge blunder, such as sending a treasured and highly-promoted unit away from the rest of the stack onto a tile where it can be easily killed. Having every turn auto-saved is a quick and easy remedy for such situations.

I had my first game next to the Zulus in close proximity to the Zulus and found it very frustrating. I know everyone says take them out early, but how early? Mass warrior rush? My game turned into a grind with him losing units, but wounding mine enough that I couldn't really take advantage. Very frustrating.

Will the game be slower if every turn its gonna save? Im talking about later on the game when it goes slowly anyway...
