Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

I recently began playing the Civ IV Rhye's and Fall mod and have hit a rather annoying difficulty in trying to declare war. It seems I cannot declare war by attempting to move my units into enemy territory. I know how to Alt click to declare war but I can't do that to delcare war on independent cities in Rhye's and Fall. I'm wondering if there is some option I changed somewhere to prevent this.

You might try asking in the RFC forum.

I always use the right mouse button to move units, and have never had any difficulties declaring war in RFC. I believe I've heard of others that are struggling, though. (Search the forum in question.)

Personally I'd like to mod RFC so that there was some other way to declare on Minor Civs. Because I believe Open Borders should be the default agreement with the Independets, not mere Peace. (I have further ideas for a modmod, also...)

As I understand it you can only work 21 tiles in your city. Is there any reason or benefit to having a city grow to 22+?

A city of that size will probably have a lot of specialists slots available so there's much for the extra citizens to do. It's also very rare for a size 21 city to have all citizens working tiles instead of some being assigned as specialists (usually because total overlap avoidance is almost always suboptimal).

I had a similar issue. It would just keep saying that I the directory could not be found or was incorrect or something like that, but when I followed it, I ended up exactly where I was supposed to be. I think it might have been a one-time event, as it hasn't ever happened before, but I haven't modded since it happened, so . . . And yes, I'm running Vista, if that matters.

One other thing to check is that you saved the file as extension .xml, your one time event error may have been caused by a file saved as .txt in error. :crazyeye:

There's already an opportunity cost in that you significantly reduce the chances of a foreign religion spreading to your cities (through missionaries or trade routes) if it hasn't already. So you lose out on the diplomatic benefits of being able to switch to a different religion, along with not being able to build that religion's temples and monasteries. And later in the game, with Free Religion, you could wind up lacking the monasteries needed to create missionaries for the one extra :).

hi Sisiutil - thanks for the debate! I agree with you, but, I think as Theocracy operates, rather than as it is defined, even an average player can mitigate by prioritizing the founding of additional religions. However, Theocracy as defined is much more challenging to mitigate. I never realized I *could* spread non-state religion, so for all these years, when I run Theocracy, I would switch back to Organized Religion or Pacificism a few times before Scientific Method to make sure I get enough monasteries in place to run Free Religion later. But, it's much more challenging this way, as if I'm embroiled in war, those extra turns of anarchy can really hurt, and, if I don't found any other religions, I've found myself at then end of the game still with one religion and needing to come up with creative ways to manage happiness.

I looked in the XML to see what was there, and Theocracy requires a state religion, and is the only Civic with No Non-State Religion Spread set to 1 - so if it is a bug, it would be on the Python side.

Code:
<CivicOptionType>CIVICOPTION_RELIGION</CivicOptionType>
<Type>CIVIC_THEOCRACY</Type>
...
<bStateReligion>1</bStateReligion>
<bNoNonStateReligionSpread>1</bNoNonStateReligionSpread>

I think I might post this out in the General Forum to see what others think. If it's just me, I'll just add it to my mod, instead of submitting a bug report. :)

Hmmm, maybe on the lower levels. I'm rarely able to found religions on Immortal--I usually don't bother trying.

I'm confused exactly on how to download maps (or really anything for Civ 4). I'm only really interested on playing Earth. I've got the complete edition and was going to start BTS but whats the best way to be able to choose my leader on earth to start on the desired location? That's basically what I'm trying to do. If I do a custom scenerio or scenerio I know I can pick my leader, buts it's limited. I really want to be able to do whats on the custom game screen, but the only option is Earth2 which I think is a random start point on earth. Do I need to download another earth map in order to do this?

How does the option to vote for a diplomatic victory open? I have control of the UN but diplo victory isn't an option after 5 different votes have passed.

Earth 2 is a random generated map that ruffly resembles modern day earth with similar continent, desert etc. layout. If you start with this map (huge with the basic 11 civs) and if Africa is a seperate continent from Europe and Asia then you'll start somewhere in Europe/Asia with all the other civs. Just for your information.

Is there a thread where I can ask for someone to mod the game for me? Do I have a good chance someone will say yes?

Natural - islands prevalent
Pressed - some islands
Solid - No islands

For pangea maps.

Now, my question ...

is there a way to combine the earth 34 civ map (that uses the earth18civ map, but adds in more civs) in conjunction with the 40civ mod? The earth34 civ hasn't been updated to 3.19

I'd ask in those specific threads but no one's really active there.

Im reading articles at the War academy in the main site, and i wanna know if the information in there is also good for BTS the latest version?
I have seen there articles before 3-4 years and i dont wanna make a mistake by relying on them while it wont be usefull for the the current version.

Can someone please make it clear for me?

My own articles have been updated and contain notes in the text to indicate advice that is different for Warlords and/or BtS; however, I can't speak for everyone else. The only advice I can offer is exercise some discretion.

Also, it can take the hard-working, underpaid mods ;) some time to update the War Academy, so if you find an article there you like but suspect it's out of date, use the forum's search feature to see if the author updated it in its home thread.

Thx Sisiutil.
Actually i have started to read your 'Strategy Guide for Beginners' about few minutes ago, and it helps me alot. Its very understandable and you made great job on that.

A quick question. How do you remove the map annotations?
I'm using buffy mod 3.19. An annoying +1c prairie dogs has appeared below my capital and i want it gone . I read through the shortcut keys and looked around but i cant find out how to remove it Thanks !

I didnt notice this thread so started one and then noticed :)

Just press Alt+S and click on the tile; you can also do this to place an annotation on a tile if you want one.
are there fewer resources on the map as the difficulty goes up?
Not in my experience, no. The differences between the difficulty levels have to do, mostly, with bonuses the AI civs get compared to you.
