Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

Something that is very helpful when not creative and running slavery is to start building a granary until a turn before the pop grows to 2, switch to a monument, whip it next turn and resume the granary.

Question:

What is usually your first build for the first few cities you've founded after your capital?

I usually build monument or warrior first, but I've started to try worker first and it's worked out well.

If you are playing against the AI, I go worker then warrior. After that, it depends on my needs, but another worker, a few warriors, and a couple settlers are in the near future.

ok well checklist.

1. i reloaded 3 different times, and i had over 80 gold each time. and when i start at 100% spending im only at -6 or -4.
2. i get 3 cities with a warrior and scout on each. (max)
3. i get 2-3 workers per city to start clearing out forests asap.

also, does the fact that im playing FfH mean anything different? like different requirements for workers going on strike?

so i started a new game with no problems and literally the same setup as i just described. but i think it was because the civ that uses the world power 'river of blood' or something that lowers all cities by 2 is what made me go on strike or something, cuz that was the only difference

ok so now that i tried to load my game again this morning, i get an error msg when loading the game saying 'assets are locked to protect changing the mod files' or something like that. is that because i checked lock assets in the beginning of the game? if so, why hasnt it given me this error msg before when loading previously?

When playing with the only city challenge option what happens when you kill the last unit defending a rival city? Does it auto-raze or are you given the option to hand the city to another civ?

I almost always build a granary first in my second and subsequent cities. The only major exception is if I'm settling near seafood I will sometimes build a workboat.

Since I always escort my settlers, my cities will have at least a temporary garrison right from the beginning. Rather than having the new city fend for itself in terms of labor I've usually got one or two workers queued up in my existing cities to maintain the magic 1.5:1 ratio.

As for getting the initial border pop, I regard monuments as a last resort. If I have music I'll build culture for a few turns; if I'm in CS I'll run an artist. Or if not, I'll prefer to send a missionary.

Burn baby burn! :devil:

This issue is typically to do with save corruption. It was particularly a problem in the original Civ4 game and the earlier patches - not so much in the expansions. (Which versions are you both running, by the way?)

The only solution to a corrupted save that I can think of would be to try loading up the autosave. Simply go to "Load Game" as usual, then click the "+" beside the "single" folder, click on the "auto" folder (this holds the autosaves), and load the most recent autosave for your game. This will hopefully work.

As for a long-term solution, I also experienced this problem quite a bit in the earlier versions of the game, and found that keeping two saves (alternately saving a different one each time) usually fixes the issue. One save may corrupt, but it is highly unlikely that both will corrupt at the same time.

Alternatively, just use the autosave - perhaps adjusting it to save turn by turn. If you want to do this, you will need to go into your root savegame folder (usually something like Users/Your Name/My Documents/My Games/Civ4), and look for the CivilizationIV.ini file. Open it in notepad, then press Ctrl-F and search for "autosave". Change this:

Code:
; The maximum number of autosaves kept in the directory before being deleted.
MaxAutoSaves = 5

; Specify the number of turns between autoSaves. 0 means no autosave.
AutoSaveInterval = 4
To something like this:

Code:
; The maximum number of autosaves kept in the directory before being deleted.
MaxAutoSaves = 100

; Specify the number of turns between autoSaves. 0 means no autosave.
AutoSaveInterval = 1

Hope that helps. :)

Why would anyone check "lock assets" in a one player game? (serious question, not irony or sarcasm) Isn't this for multiplayer games to be sure everyone is playing with the same or no mods?

If you are playing in the Hall of Fame here at CFC, it's compulsory to have that option checked, so you can't WorldBuilder yourself to a high score. I believe that was probably something like the idea Firaxis had in mind when they added that option. ;)

For non-competitive private single player games, there's no reason to have the option checked though, as long as you can restrain yourself from clicking into the WorldBuilder when you're not sure you want to. :)

Don't know if this has been asked (not about to look through 700+ pages):
How do I edit a map so that the starting age is different? Basically I want to play the standard Earth 18 Civs map but starting in the industrial era. That means that newly founded cities start with more buildings and population.

It means it no longer costs an extra movement point to cross a river. (This only applies when moving on roads or 2 move units - you can always move at least 1 square a turn).

Kept getting distracted - anyway, why is it that Economy civics do not show as an option when I try to get a civ to change it through espionage, or simple trade?

...and I hate Suryavarman II with a vengeance!

Thanks I thought it must have been something like that.

I reckon in CIV5 they should allow proper bridge building for islands one tile away from another/mainland.

I only just found out he is male!!

Did anyone else use to think that?

Look at his leaderhead.. It's not hard to get it wrong

Replayed the same OCC map 3x now and he keeps becoming the dominant civ. Now in espionage I can't drive him away from Mercantilism so I can't spread my sushi corp his way. In the trade table that doesn't show up as an option either, though all the other 4 civics' choices show up in red. Why is that?

He really hurt me bad the first two tries I had on this map. First time he caught me unprepared with a catapult-filled SoD. Second time he vasalled almost everyone else, nearly won by domination, then proceeded to send mechinf SoDs my way. Really hate his ugly mug!
