Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

I got a question about CivFan Forums. I have posted on a whopping 4 threads, and I am wondering, when posts become more frequent and varied, how can I easily keep track of and follow threads where I have posted?

Thanks in advance for any help on this matter.

Oh yeah, when will I be allowed a quote tag? Same time as the avatar, 30 days and 30 posts?

"Long time listener, first time caller."

Quote tag? You mean a custom title (like my Epistemologist)? Then, yes.

Also, you can view all the posts you've made in topics by viewing your profile, going to the Statistics tab, and clicking "view all posts".

Hey, thanks for the quick response.

And, no, not the Epistemologist custom title, but the personal quote at the end, "People want me to do..."

And, 'profile', 'statistics', 'view all posts', is exactly what I was looking for. Thanks again Jerrymander.

BTW, do you own a sailboat, because there is one with that name floating at a marina in Deale, MD.

That's called a "signature" around these here parts. It should be available via "Edit Signature" when you click on "My Account", above. But you might have to either wait a certain number of days or post a certain number of times before you're allowed to change it--it's been so long for me I no longer remember.

Personally, I think burning Great People for a golden age is kind of a waste, but that's just me. Usually, I try to have at least two in my capital. One for the acadamy one to join the city. Speaking of situational though, recently I had the two I just mentioned in place and popped a third while in the middle of a war. I simply couldn't spare a unit to escort him to another city so right there in the capital he stayed.

Funny - I burn a LOT of GP for Golden Ages. Most games, at least 3 GP, occasionally 6, and once, ten.

But YMMV. I play on a lot of huge maps and tend to have big, sprawling empires by the time I get to the Rep/Free Market/Free Religon/State Prop/Emancipation civic decision tree. If I'm not playing a Spiritual leader, avoiding anarchy during midgame civic changes can be worth more beakers than a Great Scientist would bulb, on its own. And that's not even considering:
- the doubled GPP production, which leads to a replacement GP faster
- the additional :science: :gold: and :hammers: from the Golden Age itself.

With this in mind, I make a point of getting Mausallos if I can.

Any idea why Cereal Mills can't be founded in a city?

I have plenty of cash, have the resources, it hasn't been founded elsewhere and have a great merchant. However, the option of creating the Corp is greyed out, but with no "red warning" notes.

There are no competing corporations present.

The screen print is attached.

Well, I HAVE been known to do it on occasion, but it's a rarity. For instance, the last one I remember I had gotten a Great Artist from discovering music first AND popped a Great Prophet in the same turn. BAMMO! The Golden age began. Otherwise, I prefer giving my cites the game long (As opposed to 8 turns) extras that Great People provide.

Why did it take two GPs for the Golden Age Do you not play BTS? If so, then I understand your reluctance. GAs for far more valuable in BTS than Vanilla or Warlords. The first one only costs one GP, there is no anarchy and double speed GP production.

In BTS, Golden Ages are generally the best use for GPs after the end of the Liberalism race. The alternatives diminish because their benefits are much smaller relative to the size of your empire. 1500 beakers is huge when you're only making 50 BPT. It's a lot less thrilling when you pull in 500. The same consideration applies to settling. At the same, a GA become much more attractive when dozens or even hundreds of tiles gain from it.

Edit: the alternative, of course, is to save it for a corp.

Well I HAVE been playing a lot of Vanilla lately. Primarily because of GOTM (I can't seem to get the "assets" working for Warlords or BtS). At some point I WILL do BtS again, so I'll keep that in mind.

Is the optimal slider rate for research either 100% or 0%, in order to capitalize on multiplier buildings? If so how many multiplier buildings do you build on average before you adopt this method?

SoP

1: Never. I answer them before I post them

2: To capitalize on multiplier buildings, keep your slider as high as possible unless you want culture/espionage/money!!!

Q: How many times have you answered one of your own newbie questions?

A: Never. I answer them before I post them.

DERP!

(I caught your meaning, just giving you a hard time)

And a quick note to SoP, Jarlaxe is right on the money.

This has nothing to do with multiplier buildings except that, if you expect to build one shortly, keep the slider at the opposite extreme. For example, if you have just discovered Writing, it is usually good practice to save up money and then burn in after your libraries have been built. You get a 25% bonus on your research by waiting. See here for a discussion of the advantages of binary research.

When there isn't going to be a "long term" in the game, it's an easy decision to burn 1, 2, or even 3 GP to start a Golden Age.

Saving 2 or 3 turns of anarchy can equal 3000-6000 beakers all by itself. Which is about what a bulbed GP will produce.

A settled Great Scientist, even under Rep with +175% multipliers, only produces 25 beakers per turn. So if you settle... you won't see a 3000 beaker benefit until 120 turns pass. Better to have those beakers sooner rather than later, IMO.
