Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

A little behind the scenes kinda question, but is there a way to set it up so the Buffy mod loads by default when I start a normal Civ4BtS game?

Thanks in advance to anyone who can answer.

Yep, edit CivilizationIV.ini in your My Games folder to make Buffy load on startup.

There's a line like this:

Code:
; Specify a Mod folder (Mods\Mesopotamia), '0' for none
Mod = 0

Set it to autoload Buffy by putting the "Mods\XXXX" line in there, where XXXX is the name of the buffy folder.

Washington is my neighbour and he is winning against me in score and size and when game shows list of ''most powerful empires'' Washington is in a lot better position then me. But after wiping Bismark out of game I have veteran praetorians army (some of them have 3 city rider bonuses) with some catapults while Washington cities defend by a couple axemens and archers. Should I try to attack. I'm a bit behind in research because of my war with Bismark. Should I try to attack?

It depends. How's that for an answer?

The first thing that comes to mind is what sort of victory condition are you going for? I frequently fall behind other AI's in points, power, etc when going for cultural or space race victories.

If you are going for time/point victory it still depends. Near as I can tell, and I know other people know better, points come from techs and cities. So, perhaps you can out pace him without slamming him.

If you are going for conquest victory, it still depends. But, we can be assured, you will have to crush him sooner or later.

It depends.

Holy smokes! It worked; it's a miracle. Thanks again Jerrymander.

on that topic, there many different mods and maps on here of Huge and Large Earths. Each one I've tried so far, comes up a bit short.

What one's would you recommend that have at least 32 Civs, a few in the New World, old world, Asia, historical starting locations, adjustable leaders and civs? If they require DLL, which I still don't get how it works, to enable extra civs, what is it, who's got the right one and how to install it.

Thanks! Each time I try to play Eastern Roman Empire on these maps, it's always unrealistic.

I have built all the parts for my spaceship (I think).

ship before I stopped and created another civilization. Is this why It won't proceed to
the building of the ship?

Yes. The only way to get the creation and launch after time runs out would be to disable time victory in a custom game. After the game is won or lost, another victory/loss isn't considered. Since time ran out, someone was counted as winning at 2050. Let's hope it was you.

Normally once you've built all of the ship parts, a Launch button becomes available on the spaceship screen; you click that to launch. I think you can access the spaceship screen at any time from the victory conditions screen (the raised fist icon in the upper-right area).

i know we have been through this but i hav lost my receipt to my civ 4... is there ANY way to kinda like glue a BTS MOD pack to my disc of civ 4? btw i dont actually want to glue it but i really want BTS :'(

Civ IV Complete is 12 bucks on Amazon and BTS alone is $6.60 I assume it should be about the same in the UK. It's not a huge chunk of change.

This is just something that's annoying. Why when you click alt to upgrade all units of a certain type does it always leave a handful left over?

Because you don't have enough cash to do them all at once?

This is a genuine problem that I know exists... many times I've had to use F5 to find every single unit that wasn't upgraded by the so-called 'upgrade all', and finally after about four to six alt-upgrades I have every one of that unit upgraded... except for usually just one more sat in one of my cities, which I have to find, and then upgrade.

This would be a major annoyance for me, but F5 is so useful that it turns the annoyance down to just something minor that I let pass, because I know that with F5's lovely unit-finder, even if the game failed me, I can upgrade -everyone- like I wanted by the end of the turn after all.

I'm glad F5 is working for you, but on a separate issue, why are you upgrading every single unit? I upgrade very selectively--I only have so much gold to go around, after all, and better things to spend it on than upgrading a combat 1/shock/cover axe to a grenadier! :crazyeye:

I prefer to upgrade only highly-promoted units that I can't easily re-create in my best military cities (with settled GGs and/or West Point), and/or units with still-relevant promotions that are not available to the upgraded unit (City Raider being the best example, since it's not available to grens, rifles, or infantry; some of the UUs also fit here, such as creating amphibious grens, rifles, or infantry from the Viking berserker).

Forgive me for saying so--please take it as a sort of back-handed compliment--but if you have enough gold available to upgrade every unit in your empire, maybe it's time for you to move up a level! ;)

I used to try to upgrade every single unit, but now I only upgrade those in cities in danger or in my SoD.
I generally don't have enough gold anyway, and moving up in difficulty is dependent on more things than just cash.

However, when I get all techs except for Future Tech I switch Gold to 100% and start mass upgrading everything.

Why would you stop research before Future Tech 1? You know that it gives every city +1:) and +1:health: ... that's better than most Wolrd Wonders do for you at this stage of the game. :crazyeye:
