Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

I would guess that reducing the number of civs would slightly reduce the wait time between turns, but that the main costs scale with the total area under AI control -- thus, you need to reduce the map size to improve your time-between-turns.

I usually play on Small maps for that reason. Unfortunately I don't think you could make a plausible Earthlike map in such small confines.

Can we get a German (?) speaker to PM an answer?

It's German, all right; Google Translate says he's getting a crash when he tries to use the Phillipines Empire. No idea how to help him.

Sounds like the game crashes to desktop when he uses that map. Probably not compatible with the latest version/his version of the game. Just a guess.

I've looked up the StartingPoints mod. Took a while to find it, but got there in the end :)

Hope it can reduce the end-game turn times a bit. Maybe I need to play on the smallest maps. Just a shame cause I really like the "realistic" maps with starting positions. Hopefully that mod can give me a nice compromise between size and realism.

It doesn't reduce turn times, but you wanted real maps.

(Translation: I'm always getting an error with a mod, for example when I choose the Philippine empire, an error message appears, then the screen goes black or the game crashes to desktop.)

Wie heißt das Mod und wo hast Du es her? Welche Civ-Version nutzt Du? Bist Du sicher, dass die beiden kompatibel sind und dass Du es richtig installiert hast? Was genau sagt die Fehlermeldung? Wenn's geht, versuche bitte, auf Englisch zu antworten, Du kannst ja eine deutsche Übersetzung dranhängen, wenn Du Dir unsicher bist. :)

(Which mod is this and where did you get it? Which version of Civ are you using? Are you sure the two are compatible, and that you installed the mod correctly? What exactly is the error message? If possible, please try to answer in English - you can add a German translation if you're not sure. :) )

Good lookin' out, Dude. :goodjob:

The tile a city is placed on provides 2:food:, 1:hammers: and 1:commerce: regardless of terrain type? If so, you're better off settling on desert/tundra (if pos) than grasslands (for example), but if its a hill you still get the defence bonus?

In BTS you launch you SS, and win when it reaches the desination (al.la Civ I and II). I just won a space victory with vanilla (1.74) when the last part was built!!! No launch!

Events. In my current BTS game its 1300AD and I've 1 event (truffles) and 1 quest (the tririmes one, which I failed cos building 6 of them when BLing for PP made it slightly difficult!) Is this normal, I'd have liked a few more (good or bad) for the variety

Ta in advance x

1. Yes, and you do get the defense bonus from hills.

2. That's correct. In BTS you launch, and the ship flies to it's destination. This gives you time to prevent the ship from reaching Alpha Centauri by destroying the launching civ's palace.

3. ("BLing for PP"?). The random events are, well, random. I dunno if any mods exist that increase their frequency.

Correct. Also, a plains hill will (as an exception to the rule) you get 2:hammers: on the city tile instead of one. Since the hill also provides a defense bonus, it's often a good idea to settle on a plains hill if available - but don't go out of your way to do so, it's usually not worth foregoing quick access to a resource, for example.

You're also correct in observing that you can use this mechanic to "settle away" a non-useful tile like tundra (or desert, for that matter). It usually doesn't help that much though because where#s one tundra (or desert) tile, you'll usually have more in the vicinity, so you'll probably have a bunch of useless tiles in your city anyway.

I usually get considerably more events, but I don't know what influences their frequency. I tend to play on super-huge maps with 34 civs, so my experiences aren't necessarily representative.

Ah, I'm on medium/normal with another 3 civs and continent to self (wanted an easy build game to ease myself in gently)
The 1st only event came really early, so expected lots more, but no :(
Reading Ori's page on them, loads of the pre-reqs are met

What's the deal with missionaries being national units? You can only build 3 in a certain period of time? How many turns before you can build more again, or is there some other way to be able to build them again once you max out?

You just can't have more than three (in your case) at the same time. If you use one (or lose it), you can then build a new one.
