Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

Hey peeps...

Have read in a number of places that is a big no-no to settle a city one tile off the coast, but i don't quite understand why. If anyone has the answer would appreciate it, thanks!

If it's not on a tile adjacent to the coast, it's not a coastal city, and therefore can't build a Lighthouse. Without it, water tiles only give you one food, wich sucks. The lighthouse makes water tiles self-sustained in terms of food.

Well, for starters you get stuck with coastal tiles that you can't do anything with (can't build lighthouse to increase food yield), so you've got a bunch of crappy tiles. No harbors, either.

And no launching pleasure watercraft for the paparazzi to chase. :mischief:

And really, no place to build and launch naval vessels. If you settle every coastal city one tile off of the coast... no navy at all.

"Why, hello Shaka. Boy that's a lot of aircraft carriers you have there..."

Space Race, after the spacecraft was launched: Which city has to be destroyed/conquered to cancel the space race victory?
a) City which the palace was in, during the turn the last part of the spacecraft was finished?
b) City which the palace was in, when the spacecraft was launched?
c) City which the palace currently is in (during the flight)?*

Redarg
* Take a note, that you can move the palace each turn.

The Palace needs to be captured to cancel the spaceship in flight. That is to say, (c) is correct.

If Machineguns were Gunpowder Units, then Infantry (+25% vs Gunpowder) attacking them would get 25 attack. The whole point of the Machinegun, in the real world, is to wipe out masses of attacking infantry, so this fits well.

They could have given the machine gun +25% versus infantry to compensate instead of making it siege...

Hi, I was wondering where I could read the complete evaluation of RB Pitboss #2? Sulla's website isn't working for page 5, and 8+.

They're already +50% versus Gunpowder, which includes Infantry.
And also, it means Pinch skills won't work; brings back variety in defender types for a short while. You'd need Charge to break through that hail of heavy caliber bullets.

Anyways, MGs can also be physically classed Siege because they're heavy emplaced weapons. Like Artillery, but instead of firing a small number of large shells, they fire a huge number of small bullets. They also lack wheels and are awkward to transport.

OK, finishing up a final game of Warlords and then moving onto my newly purchased BtS! Love to micromanage, and i'm nearing the end of this game, as far as I can tell it looks like my main rival (just behind me in score) is Mansa who is going to complete his last Space Ship component 2-3 turns in front of me. It's still a little ways off, so I'm hoping I can get a spy there and maybe afford to conduct a little sabotage. But this brought me to the question, let's assume he beats me by just a couple of turns, is it still worth it to launch behind him? Is there a chance his shot (or mine for that fact) could be unsuccessful? The manual is kind of quiet on these points which is why I was wondering.

He is currently at war with neighbors to his North, but he's still building the last couple of parts in the south, maybe a sneak attack by me to his south could change that? Just looking for some idea's that might help, short of having a monster treasury at my disposal.

If you manage to pull it together fast and build just one more part than him, then launching it 3 turns after could still win you the game. If that fails, ICBM him.

If you build every component of your spaceship, then the launch cannot fail on its own, and will take 10 normal-speed turns to achieve victory. If during that time, your capital is razed or captured, then the launch is off.

In other words, it might be a good idea to throw an army together and make a surgical strike or two.

Sweet, I like the ICBM idea. Outside of that, I could build an extra part, is there one specifically that helps more than others? An extra engine or something?

Two engines will get it there in the shortest amount of time. Just remember that for every casing you don't put on the ship, it increases the possibility of failure by 20%. ;)

Does anybody know how I can take a screenshot in civ 4? When I take one, it does NOT show any civ 4, it just takes a screen shot of my desk top instead, as if civ 4 is not even open. I'm running civ 4 through steam, since that is probably the problem, but I also run civ 3 through steam and it does NOT have this issue.

Edit: tested and screenshots work fine in windowed mode, but in full screen, it takes a screenshot of my desktop instead of my civ 4 screen

sometimes it's better to launch before the second engine is built. then engine is usually the last part of the ship to be built and it's expensive. On normal speed with all the thrusters built two engines will only save you 2 or 3 turns of travel time, so unless you have 2 very powerful production cities it's often better to skip the second engine. Don't ever skip any of the thrusters or casing.

Opies, use Fraps to take screenshots, it works for every 3D game.

And Fabi was asking how to add new civilizations to the game.

What sized map would you recommend to speed up the end game a fair bit? I've played the Earth18civ map and loved that, but by 1900 I wait 30-60 seconds between turns, which is a lot when you add it up.

Would there be any point in trying the normal Earth map with 9 civs instead of 18, or will it be exactly the same at the end as the map is likely to be filled to the brink with troops and buildings anyway?

Are there any realistic maps, earth or Europe or whatever, with starting positions you can recommend that is smaller than the Huge earth maps? I really like that kind of map, but I'd like to see the game less slow at the end, as it's very boring to basically just sit around and twin my thumbs.
