Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

Think thats to do with espionage spending. SB must have been spending more than you, so if you keep losing mines and pastures, it could be him.
Although I've noticed the % be in my favour when I have spent nothing at all. So there might be other factors in place.
It does seem pointless when you lose an insignificant mine, but when you want to steal a tech and the cost is 130%, guess it does pay in the end... maybe.

And I have a bit of a n00b question too.
On multiplayer hotseat, how can I set a turn timer? Its blacked out for me...
want to try that thing TMIT suggests in his article on speed, to play by yourself with a turn timer.

Can somebody help me to better understand some info on the Espionage Screen, please. Running a BtS game using BUG, as an example I have Sitting Bull to my north and Gilgamesh to the east.

In the case of SB I have a significant lead in EP, around 240 to his 100, yet the % is showing 109% on my line and 91% on his line. Why? I was under the impression that if I had the % on my line was over 100 I was going to pay MORE, why would that be the case, when I have a double digit lead?

I think there is a bit of a misunderstanding. The percentage shows the bonus/penalty on cost of espionage for that civ against you and you against that civ. 109% means that for every 100 points you spend, you are getting 109 EP's worth of stuff. (Its good to have high percents). When he spends against you, he only gets 91 cents worth of espionage for his espionage dollar spent. The bonus/penalty is not linear with amount of EP, but is determined by the amount of EP and nothing else.

Using up the EP on missions will reduce the amount of EP you have, and thus costs will rise.

At least that's how I understand it... but I'll admit I could be wrong.

Note: Every Palace generates 4? EP/turn, and default is to spread that evenly over the first civs you meet (all weighted zero). The AI does the same. So if you have met your first civ, but he has already met many others, it is quite likely you are allocating esp on him without even making any active choice, and he is allocating nothing on you because his are already allocated to others.

Thank you kcd_swede, that explanation makes much more sense than how I was looking at it originally. Thank you.

I have BTS, installed the 3.19 patch, but I can't load any saves on this forum because version incompatibility.

According to the "About this build" window:

Civ Version: 317
Save version: 301
Build Version: 3.1.9.0 (128100)
Build Date: Thu May 14 10:17:10 2009
Build: FINAL RELEASE
Mod Name: None

How do I upgrade to save version 302?

I have some questions about the Great Generals.

1. I moved a GG into the city where I had the Heroic Epic, in order to settle him for the extra XP points. His options, besides settling, still included building a military academy. If I build a military academy in a city with the Heroic Epic, do the bonuses stack, ie do I get 4 times as many :hammers: when building military units instead of only the double that either one would give alone?

2. Does the military academy speed up ships and aircraft also, or only ground units?

3. Do the extra XPs from the settled GG apply to ships and aircraft as well or only ground units?

Bonuses are additive, having Heroic Epic (+100%) and a Mil Academy (+50%) will give a total 150% bonus to :hammers: spent on units.

It applies to ships and air units, nukes too ;)
3. Do the extra XPs from the settled GG apply to ships and aircraft as well or only ground units?
It works for any unit that can get XP, so yes naval and air get the bonus.

Hey, Finished my FIRST Noble game last night. Managed to WIN!! Even though it was a diplomatic victory. was a bit of a let down. Played as Gandhi, and managed to Be first in completing the space ship. I launched. but, on the turn, that i should have won...It said the space ship failed. and game carried on.

At this point, I was like what the hell...thats like 24 hours ive put into this, i wanna win. Anyhow, whilst all this was going on, I was putting the beat down on every civ, except my biggest rival civ - Huayna Capec - and his vassal. I had built the UN. So i changed course and went for a UN diplomatic resolution. With a large empire, as well as 4 vassals support against one rebel civ (brennus), and one close rival and his lacky. I ended up winning the vote. During all this, I had actually rebuilt the space ship again.

My question is - why didnt the first space ship win - can it be sabotaged??? I built most of the parts that were necessary - although i didnt build the space elevator, does that make a difference??

The cause of failure was not having enough SS Casings, each one you have adds 20% chance of success up to a potential total of 100%.
It will also fail if your capital gets captured, but that seems not to be the case.

Welcome to the forums and congrats on your win. Ghpstage is right, as usual.

Space Elevator is usually not worth building. It gives a small bonus to production, but usually not enough to justify the hammers and time to research Robotics. Nice to see you knew enough not to build it.

Thanks Ghpstage for clearing things up for me about the GG!

I must be going crazy, but what is the method used to put "notes" on the map? I'm searching and searching and I can't seem to find the option, despite seeing such notes in many Civ 4 screen shots.

Alt+S, click on a tile, type your note. Alt+S and click on an existing note to make it go away.

Two quick questions. Playing regular PIG mod, on an Earth 2 map.
#1, does the Earth 2 create an exact replica of our Earth, or just the general idea behind it, i.e. similar resources, etc.?

#2 it appears that myself and the other 8 AI's were all plotted throughout what would be europe, Asia, Austrailia, leaving the entire America's north and south hemisphere strictly to the Barbs. This is what I've uncovered from a scout to this point. I have a huge abundance of Happy and Food, seriously lacking in strategic. No horses, limited copper and iron. Is it going to be worth my while to establish a colony over there to get horses and other valued resources. I know there are a lot of arguments about Colonies, just thought it might be the easiest way to solve the problem. My economy is strong and vibrant at the moment so an oversea's colony won't be a total deal breaker, but how bad does it get?

Thanks

A nice simple question now.
Spiral Minaret says '+1 Gold from all State Religion Buildings'
So what if you have the No State Religion civic active? Does that mean no bonus, or bonus from all religions?
I'm guessing the former, but wanting it to be the latter.

Since the building has to have the same affiliation as the state religion, there are no "no state religion" buildings, so no bonus

In my experience the Espionage is right this:The percentage of EP is a function of all EP you and the other spend in the game, total the same, you 've a positive relation to this player. Example
You spend 1000 EP against all (inclusive dead players) and the other fewer, than your EP against him have a value >100%.

How did this happen?

How did the AI build a city 2 tiles away from Brandenburg? Playing with Better AI.

Another question, a city's culture can't extend beyond a coastal space unless it's in the BFC? In this same image HRE has 0% culture in the Incan city spaces.
