Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

What actions specifically trigger the 10 turns peace treaty.

Also, in a recent game I traded a Defensive Pact with another Civ and as I recall within just a couple of turns they declared war on me. Does that sound right?

I've had that happen to. Sometimes a nutcase will sign a defensive pact at pleased, stay pleased and attack. I almost think that the decision to sign a defensive pact is separate from the decision to attack you. It's like when he declares war on you, the AP vote comes up next turn and he votes to stop the war he's involved it.

Hey, i'm extremely new to this game (just my second session, after breezing through settler the first time, chieftain now(BTS) and i've run into a problem that i don't really understand.

This has occurred many times in a number of unique situations, but its especially problematic as i've just expanded with a number of new cities, all of which have the same issue.

When trying to build farms on grassland on any of my cities, with civil service researched, the "build farm" selection is often times faded out, even though its description has no red text or negative qualifiers. I have no idea whats causing this, as it says its irrigated with an extra +1 food, its on grassland, and nothing seems to be amiss, but it won't allow me to build.

I would greatly appreciate a prompt response, as i really can't continue my session until i figure this out.(4 new settlements with 9 workers shipped over, and they can't do a thing.)

Irrigated +1 food means that a farmed tile would gain 1 food if it was irrigated.
Irrigation means that a chain of farms or cities on flatland, exists between that plot of land and a source of fresh water (lake/river/oasis).
Before Biology non resource farms only provide a food increase if irrigated, so if the tile isn'tr irrgated you can't build one.

Looks like no one answered this.

  • Obviously, ending a war with a peace treaty means neither of you can declare war on one another for 10 turns (as opposed to a cease fire, which can be broken at any time).
  • Outside of war, if either of you give in to a request from the other--be it for a gift (if relations are at Pleased or Friendly) or tribute (if relations are anywhere below Pleased), that also triggers a 10 turn peace treaty. Items that may be asked for include gold, gold per turn, a resource, and/or a technology.

Before you obtain the Biology technology, converting a non-resource tile (i.e. one without rice, wheat, or corn) to a farm requires access to water. Prior to Civil Service, the tile needs to be immediately adjacent to a source of fresh water. After Civil Service (but, again, pre-Biology), a source of fresh water is still required, but it can be indirect. That is, by building a farm on a tile adjacent to fresh water, you can then farm a tile adjacent to that one even if it doesn't have access to water; the idea is that the water spreads from one tile to the next, to the next, to the next, and so on.

Please note that the tiles in an irrigation chain must all be flat tiles--no hills allowed, 'cause hey, water doesn't flow uphill.

Also, a city will automatically act as a link in an irrigation chain--provided it's on a flat tile.

Hello

I have taken notice of all the scenarios uploaded by the various people around here, which is something I appreciate. The scenarios are groupped on historical epochs, yet when I try to play a medieval scenario the whole technological tree is there, as if advancement in the rennaissance, industrial, etc age is possible.
I would be interested in scenarios that enables me to play a single epoch (medieval one would be my favourite). Are there such scenarios available?

Any reply is appreciated & many thanks in advance & sorry if this isn't the right place for such a question.

When a units is said to not receive defensive bonuses (tanks, calvary), does that mean they don't benefit from terrain ?

You are correct, Sir.

I have a couple of newbie questions.....

1) why do my ships get stuck at the edge of the map? The map wraps all the way around, but my ship cannot cross the imaginary line. For instance I was spawned in South America one game and sent a Frigate towards Australia (which my caravel had previously discovered by sailing east or towards the right on the map). But when I got to the edge of the map it would let me go any further even though I could see the tiles on the other side.

2) How do you modify a map? I have searched everywhere on the game for this and can't figure out how to do it.

Thanks.

My guess would be you were trying to use a unit that couldn't enter ocean tiles. I think at Astronomy that restriction goes away.

Ctrl-W will activate the World Builder, and you can modify to your heart's content from there.

This might also be caused by the type of map. Some map types do not wrap, though they might appear to do so.

1) Which map are you using? Maps come in three types: flat = no wrap; cylindrical = wrap left and right (east and west); spherical = wrap left and right (east and west) plus top and bottom (north and south). Some will have only one choice and will not always tell you what that is. Some will have more than one choice and let you choose. This can also change depending on whether you are playing original CIV (vanilla) or one of the expansions. For example in vanilla Fractal is cylindrical but does not tell you that, while in BTS it offers you the choice of cylindrical or spherical.

EDIT: substitute the word "torus" in the above everywhere that I used "spherical". (see #16775 and #16776 below for why)

Spheres don't wrap top and bottom. EDIT: Well they do, but not in the way you are thinking of.

You are thinking of a torus.

I knew I was using the wrong term but I did not recall what the map scripts used offhand and "spherical" got the idea across. Yes, I do know what a torus is. The description still works, just substitute "torus" for "spherical" in my reply above.

No probs. I did a topology course so I'm picky ;)

Oh, in which case she said something I couldn't understand, which is not uncommon with me and women (after awhile, they all sorta sound like Charlie Brown's teacher). :D Merry Christmas, Shifter.

Now back to our regularly scheduled program, already in progress...

My first post and a true newbie question, but I wanted to know what conditions might exist when I create a missionary and the only action icons that appear for him are the default ones (sleep, skip turn, move, get rid of this unit). Is there an action icon to make that missionary go try to spread religion? Am I correct in stating that you have to either have a monastary of that religion in the city I created that missionary, or the technology researched that states you don't have to have a monastary to create that missionary? I ask because it seems like nothing I do leads me to figure out how to make my preacher get out and get preachin! :crazyeye:
