Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

Never really played with them before but I'm in a position where I have a really solid flow on gold so it's time for me to experiment. Looking at Mining Inc, and most of the articles I see show this as a solid corp. to have, my real question is with Corp. in general, is it worth the benefit of using them and giving up the usage of State Property? Just looking for quick opinions, I know there's a ton of research that I will dig through later, just wanting to get back on tonight and play. Getting close to popping a GE (I hope) and thought I'd go with Mining, instead of the rush on Pentagon. Thanks.

Mining Inc can proviude an enormous boost to a cities production, the amount is tied entirely to the number of relevant resources the city has access to, meaning cities get the same boost regardless of size. This means it can make smaller/filler cities or newly captured cities highly productive in an instant.
The amount of production from Mining Inc can be absolutely huge, 10+:hammers: is fairly typical and 20+ not too uncommon with mid-large size empires.

Perfect! Thanks Ghpstage! One other quick question and I'm off to the races, neglected to put it above. I'm mostly looking at the domestic side, is there a significant benefit on the foreign side, similar to Foreign Trade routes? I know they can cut you off by switching Civics, but if they have the resources I'm thinking it's probably worth the investment. Again, thanks for the great and quick advice!

Spreading them to foreign cities gives your HQ +4:gold: regardless of resources while the AI city gets corp benefits depending on its own resources in the same way as you do. The other thing to note is that AIs with a corp stop trading resources that corp uses, which is a pain if its your corp.

Strengthening the AI is rarely wise and blocking trades to yourself even less so, spreading it to weak civs, like vassals can be handy for the gold but its something I generally avoid doing. Especially with the big hitting corps, Mining Inc and Sid's Sushi.

Doesn't the trade gold go to my capital city instead of my commerce city that owned the incense? I don't want it there. These are the kinds of issues I find confusing on resource trades. Thanks.:)

Trade gold does not go to any city. It goes into the total gold per turn shown at the top left of the main screen.

Thanks. So, if I have Great Lighthouse, shouldn't I trade most of my commerce resources to get the multiplier effect? Even if I have only one of a resource, don't I gain by trading it for gold per turn because of the Lighthouse?

GLH aside (someone else already addressed that), trading away all of your one only resources for gpt is usually not a good idea. For example, if you have only 1 silver mine and you trade away the silver, you lose the happiness benefit. So, (as usual) it depends on your situation. In my example, if you had plenty of happiness in all of your cities and did not anticipate exceeding the happiness cap in less than 10 turns in any of them, you could trade the silver away for the added gpt, knowing that if you need the happiness after 10 turns at some point you can cancel the deal. OTOH, if you are tight on happiness in any of your cities, you would want to keep the silver.

been a while since I checked in here...

had a virus overrun my system, screw up Explorer.exe.

had to reinstall Windows. Civ4 was on my D: drive, and wasn't affected.

however, I am having a problem now where Civ4 isn't saving my Graphics and Sound settings when I change them.

I know where the config files is, so I will just make my adjustments there I think... unless someone has another suggestion?

otherwise, can anyone direct me to a post or some sort of tutorial which details the config file settings, and what they do...

cheers.

Reinstall the game - copy your save games (and replays if you want to keep your high score table) somewhere safe first.

Reinstalling Windows gets rid of the registry entries that Civ makes during the install process.

^problem is, I don't have the disc with me... I moved to Taiwan, and I left my Civ4 Disc at home...

I suppose I could torrent it.. (I DO own the game, just don't have it with me).. =/

It's an old game. A new disc is probably cheaper than the postage at this point.

lesson to be learned here...
when moving country bring:
transport tickets, passport, toothbrush, a change of clothes and civ4 disc!

I have questions:

1) What is a good placement for cities? I mean how many screens apart from another city?

2) Where to find to some Civ4 beginner manuals?

3) Is there a manual for creating civilizations and leaders?

4) Have you heard A game called C-Evo?

5) Is there a manual for Downloads Section?

  1. The key thing is to ensure that a city will have food to feed itself. I try to make sure that all my cities have at least 1 decent food resource (4:food: or higher) in its BFC. I'll sometimes place a city with no food resources if a large enough gap in tiles opens up, but I'll make sure I can irrigate some of its tiles either from a fresh water source or via chain irrigation (w/ Civil Service).
Some overlap is inevitable and not a bad thing. You will have some powerhouse cities (capital, Heroic Epic/military pump, Great Person Farm, Wall Street, Ironworks) which will eventually need to work all their tiles, but you'll have many other less outstanding but still significant cities which may not be able to work all their tiles, but don't necessarily need to in order to contribute to your empire.
  2. Check the link in my sig. :D Also have a look at this site's War Academy.
  3. Check the Creation & Customization forum.
  4. Nope.
  5. Not sure what you mean--the downloads section is pretty straightforward to use, I've always thought.

Elizabeth is always good for a beginner. I like Hatshepsut too.

1) It depends. Ideally, I like to have them just far enough apart that the BFCs will just touch. Realistically, they may be a tile closer together and share some tiles in the BFC, switching which city works those tiles as needed, or a tile or two further apart in order to snag resources or a crucial strategic location.

2) At the top of this or any other forum screen, on the drop down menu for Civ 4 you will find the War Academy. Click that and you will find yourself where all the guides and articles are located. Many are for beginners. Most are pretty clearly named.

3) I don't know. If no one else gives a specific answer, ask in the Creation and Customization forum.

4) Not I.

5) Not sure what you mean but try either War Academy or C&C forum, depending on what you mean.

Am I correct in assuming that a newly hooked up resource will increase a Corp's benefit? Ex., discovered a source of Coal on a different continent that I can get to and would be a reasonable small city site, it would have access to the coal once hooked up. Does this then help the other cities that already have Mining Inc. already running, or is it a situation where I have to get a Corp. office into that city? Thanks

Yes, the resource will help the other cities. However, you have to compare the maintenance cost of the other city.

Thanks Ataxerxes, that kind of what I thought, but wanted to be sure. I'm hoping to line up Sushi soon and thought that if this wasn't the case then I really needed to be sure and max out resources b4 founding the Corp. In this case I've got a real good flow of $, though that isn't normally the case, and the increased Maint. should not prove too burdensome.

Question:

What is that song that they play in Warlords: Beyond The Sword opening menu.
Do you mean warlords or BTS? :p
In any case, I think they are composed for the game, a lot of it has original music. I like a lot of the folky music they use, but it can be quite generic as folk is often simplistic at heart, so I think it's unlikely to be a real tune outside of civ
