Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

Thank you, kcd_swede (and everyone else)! You answered my question :)

One further point: Even though these sources of gold are unaffected by the slider, they are increased by the gold multipliers in a city, such as banks, Wall Street, etc.

And don't forget Corporate HQ's!!!!

Only a few months ago I learned about setting up my "Wall Street" City which had all the requsite multiplier buildings (Grocer, Bank, etc.) along with the Wall Street Nat'l Wonder. I also founded my Corporate HQ there, and when all was done and said I was crankin out the cash. In that particular game I also waited and liberated a nearby Civ of their Shrine City, which is what I turned into my Personal ATM.

Playing BtS here.

When you load up units onto transports when they're stationed in cities, how can you tell which units have been loaded, and which units are still "in the city".

In the same vein, when you have 2 transports in the same square, each with a full complement of transported units - how can you tell which units are in which ship.

The graphical unit display at the bottom doesn't seem to indicate this.

I'm sure I'm missing something obvious - but I don't know what. I've already lost plenty of units as a result of not being able to determine this.

I think the graphical unit display at the bottom should indicate. It would answer your first two questions.

I think the graphical unit display at the bottom should indicate.

How? How is it indicated?

When I select the tile, there is just a long horizontal strip of small icons of all the units present in the tile. When I select the appropriate transport, its icon gets highlighted yellow. However there is no indication of what units are within that transport.

I also note that there are sometimes tiny circular white markings in the corner of some of the icons, though I have no idea what they mean - and frankly they are too small to make out.

Units in a transport are listed after the transport, I think (i.e. the stack will display units - transport - units in transport - continued...). But the transports themselves might be listed near the top, so you have to pay attention, because in that case there will be units after.
But the transports will be listed together, so you could have
galleon 1 - unit - unit - unit - galleon 2 - unit - unit - unit
so the first 3 units belong to galleon 1 etc.
it certainly takes a while to get used to using the interface efficiently for transports...

if you keep losing units, I would suggest keeping units in the city until you need them transported, as you know they can't defend when sailing. Be sure to have some guard ships too (frigates, destroyers etc)

As Danelius90 says above for the text display. For the graphic display at the bottom of the screen, the units immediately following the transport or galleon are the ones loaded on it. I think that in BTS (or it might be BUG mod) there is an option to have one of two or three graphic displays of the units. If you are using one of the optional ones, you may not get this arrangement.

If you mouse over the small icon of a transport the info displayed at the bottom left (on the same level as the icons not the bottom strip of displays) will show you how many units are loaded on that transport, although not which ones.

If someone capitulates and becomes my vassal, does that count towards the domination victory?

Also, I too like to know the answer to the q about perm alliances that was asked a couple of posts above!

50% of a vassal's land and power count towards your domination victory. However, in a "diplomation" victory your vassal votes for you so you basically get all of his population.

Perm alliances vary from Civ to Civ. I remember Mad Scientist did Roosevelt's Dream where he had to get a perm alliance with Toku. Toku is very hard to get perm with, some of the peaceful types will go for a perm alliance readily. I imagine a perm alliance would mess up your diplo as bad or worse than vassals.

Well, guys, I think I'm out. I've been trying to win my first game on Noble level, and I really thought this was the one. I was playing as Cyrus, and I was getting some great lucky breaks... good map, not much competition on my continent, river cities. I was ahead in points, I had built the Three Gorges Dam and the Space Elevator. I was on the last piece of my spaceship 4 turns from finishing, and Ghandi completed his spaceship.

This game is really complex. I'm sure I could eventually figure it out, but how many 30 hour games to do that? I don't like sitting that much, esp. just to lose.

I don't mean to whine, guys. Y'all have been great, very helpful every time I had a question. Long may you conquer!

If you are playing vanilla CIV then the Space Elevator is very helpful. However, if you are playing BTS, then (because it comes so late in the tech tree), it will actually slow down your spaceship construction, due to lost turns building it instead of spaceship parts.

As to game length, I just finished one that I played for over 69 hours, close to 70. I like long games, although I don't usually sit for more than a couple of hours or so at a time. I play when in the mood and all those turns are stretched out over several weeks or even months. My recent close to 70 turns game started on February 5. Although it is nice to win, winning isn't everything. Its the enjoyment of the play that counts.

It depends on your tech rate and tech order in the specific game. It also depends whether you're playing against humans or AI civs. In multiplayer games the Space Elevator is usually very important and is often built quite a while before the first launch. I built it in the last multiplayer game I won via space race - it sped up the spaceship because my tech rate was lower than in a single player game due to a very large army being necessary to defend my holdings.

Wow, you must be creative/philosophical!

Well, I must say that I have played games over the years with people who were "sore losers", that is they got quite upset if they didn't win. I never could understand that. In my opinion, games are to played for enjoyment not victory. There are too many things in real life where success is all that matters. Why not enjoy games where the process is what counts?

I understand that, but I sure was ready to win a game. It doesn't help when Sid tells you you have the leadership capabilities of Ethelred the Unready. I wanted something tangible to say that I was making progress in my understanding of this game. And then I lost. I can handle losing a few games if I feel like I'm learning and making progress. But after a few losses, I'm ready to win a game!

Odd question, but just an inquiry really. What are some of the added benefits of war with another civ, besides territory, gold from plunder, gaining tech and diplomacy points with the civ's rivals?

There's also gaining experience for units, making the Heroic Epic and/or West Point available, and getting Great Generals. Maybe also pillaging land to drag a top rival down and thus improve your own relative position. But the main thing of course is expanding your empire. :)
