Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

@fbcpraise: Just a thought... maybe you have fallen into your own perfection trap?

I used to get so obsessive about getting everything perfect (eg. chopping and whipping perfectly, getting all the important wonders, etc.) that I'd spend hours on the micro-management. This bogged me down so much I started not enjoying the game. Nowadays I play on Monarch; I try to finish my turns as quickly as possible (kind-of like speed-chess), I don't stop and check every city on every turn, I automate my workers as soon as all the most important improvements are finished, I automate city tile usage unless I have an emergency (IIRC, selecting the right priorities in your city screen will also affect what decisions your automated workers make). My current game is on the faster (than Normal Speed) setting as well.

I now enjoy the game MUCH more. Also, if you find that you're losing all the time, consider going down one level... and read up on some of Sisiutil's Guides or watch some of TMIT's "Let's Play" youtube videos. They are VERY educational.

Final Note: I wouldn't put too much into that leadership qualities thing of Sid's... when you lose, you're always at the bottom... when you win, most of the time your score is through the roof, so it doesn't scale very nicely.

There's also gaining experience for units, making the Heroic Epic and/or West Point available, and getting Great Generals. Maybe also pillaging land to drag a top rival down and thus improve your own relative position. But the main thing of course is expanding your empire. :)

Well I mean I read in a forum once, that war slows down the technological process of a civlization because the AI automatically goes from improving and building cities, to generating armies. Is that true? I mean I don't pay enough attention to realize it.

Hi.

I have a question about the afterworld scenario... I have started playing it and I'm actually enjoying it! But... I got stuck in the middle of the game...

This is the situation: when 1 character is suppose to go open the gates for the others to get the hell out of there... I don't see the exit doors!!! Is it supposed to be like (for us to find) that or should be it clear and is not?!

Could someone help me?
If there is a more suitable "place" to ask this question please let me know!!!

That's what I hear. Its even more effective if you can pillage the heck out of them and choke them (prevent their workers from going out of the city to make improvements). But like everything else, there is a cost-to-benefit ratio to consider. If you do it well, its postivie, if you do it haphazardly, its you who will be slowed down more than the AI.

An excellent point. Don't go to war for its own sake; have specific reasons and goals in mind. Maybe you want to capture a wonder and/or a holy city, maybe you want to claim some resources you don't currently own, or maybe you just want your opponent's land. Whatever the case may be, decide upon your reasons, set your goals, and see them through.

Or maybe, just maybe, you get jumped and and don't have any choice but to open a can.

Perhaps, but even then, you need to determine your objectives. The AI tends to suffer from what the French call idée fixe. You might fend them off, but they'll be back again and again. So are you willing to fight a series of wars of attrition? Do you want to fight them to a stalemate and negotiate peace to buy enough time to build a better army? Do you want to weaken them enough so they (hopefully) won't bother you again? Would you be willing to vassalize them? Or do you want to wipe them from the face of the earth like an ugly stain in retaliation for the unmitigated temerity of their underhanded attack upon your people?

(Feel free to picture me pounding a podium mercilessly while shouting that last sentence.)

I think people who know me around here know which option I'd choose... :ar15:

What happened to your Print Screen key?

There might be some software you can download - I may not quite be the right person to answer your question, though, as I haven't had this problem before.

Hope this helps though. :)

All the keys from 1 to 0 and F5 to Print screen do not work, might be damaged. This is giving me problems, as I was about to look for help in my Noble game. I actually plan to start a thread for playing a game in Noble, because I am having a little difficulties, or let's say, I don't have the highest score, a little backward. Anyway, I will just deal with it. :crazyeye: Thanks for help BTW :)

EDIT: Is it perfectly allowed if I would start a thread about my game since I was having difficulties in it, and looking for tips? Thanks :D

Get a new keyboard. :crazyeye: Its not very expensive.

You are of course welcome to start a thread about your game. The Strategies & Tips subsection of this forum is probably the best place... you should be able to get some good advice on a specific game there. Its also a great place to follow other games and gain insights, as well as learning strong gameplay strategies. Good luck!

I play Civ III and only now am starting with Civ IV... and I have some 'Newbie' questions:
- Roads only give movement advantage or still give trade?
- In hills is mines still the best thing to build?
- Is no advantage (apart from military maintenance savings) to disband a unit?
- Workers can no longer join other cities for Pop increase?
- Is there a way to give a pre-set order of a city build units to go immediately to other place\city?
- Where can I ask questions about scenario afterworld?

Thanks in advance for all the help!!!

One more question: where do I ask technical questions?

I got a message saying "You have selected an unusable voice capture device. Voice capture disabled". I don't have voice capture nor I want itso I'd like to know how to remove this annoying message.

What determines when you lose the hammer bonus for religious buildings from the AP?

-correct. However, roads can be used to connect cities which results in a trade route, which does provide commerce to the connected city. But this is seen inside the city, rather than on the roaded tiles. Rivers, coasts, oceans, airports will also connect a city when the appropriate technology is learned.

-yes, you can set a rally point, but I never use it and don't really know how.
-you can look here for afterworld tips, but i don't know how helpful it is:

BTW: The basic changes you'll want to know about going from Civ3 to Civ4 are pointed out here:

What determines when you lose the hammer bonus for religious buildings from the AP?

When the AP becomes obsolete. (i.e. when the owner of the Apostolic Palace learns Mass Media).

In my current game I'm AP resident, haven't teched MM (no one's even close), and I've lost the hammer bonus. I did tech Sci Method, so I expected to lose it from monasteries, but it's gone from temples too. I'm still in the AP state religion. So there must be something else.

Defying an AP resolution removes your :hammers: bonus until you vote on a resolution that passes.

Being AP resident (the one who wins the election) isn't enough. The civ that owns the city where the AP is physically located should have discovered Mass Media for the AP to be obsolete.

That's how its supposed to work, anyhow.
