what does the tiny gray star next to a city name indicate?

but I think I've had more than one star in one city? Guess not, have to keep an eye out. Thanks.

IIRC, the other one is Versailles...

The stars indicate cities with buildings that reduce maintenance in nearby cities

(someone pls correct me if I'm wrong)

You are right. It denotes your secondary capitals. In BTS, that means Versailles or Forbidden Palace.

In certain mods, you can have more than that.

ahh, ok thanks.

I see on some of the youtube letsplays people's displays indicates when a rival civ is in "war mode" or something. I have BTS but don't receive that indication. Does that come from an additional utility program or something?

We have enough on our hands right now.
WHEOOHRN

You get that message in the trade window with someone.

Or install the BUG mode and you'll see a red fist next to civilizations entering that mode (scoreboard).

The standard BTS shows it in the diplo scree. If an ai is in war mode the ability to ask them to attack anyone will be redded out and mousing over will give the reason as "We Have Enough On Our Hands Right Now" (WHEOOHRN!)

The BUG mod makes information like this more readily accessible, this particular info for example is shown as a fist next to the relevant leaders name on the scoreboards.

thank you :goodjob:

edit, follow up: Is there a hotkey or something to take a screenshot? For some reason when I try print screen it doesn't work.

also, I'm having trouble finding this BUG mod. Is it on this forum?

The Print Screen key normally produces in image in the My Documents\My Games\Beyond the Sword\ScreenShots folder (exact name may vary a bit between versions of Windows, and is presumably different on a Mac). It also puts a copy into the system's paste buffers (or whatever you want to call it), so you can also open up an image editing program (like MS Paint) and do a paste operation to get it into a new image.

It has a whole sub-forum of its own over in Civ4 - Creation & Customization > Civ4 - Project & Mod Development. Here is the download topic.

Thanks, I'll try that.

I started a game recently, and was paying so much attention to the map type and size that I forgot to ensure that I had checked the correct difficulty level. It seems easier than I expected; is there a way to check -- while the game is running -- what the difficulty level is?

F10 if i remember correctly (away from civ computer)

f8 victory screen actually ;)

How does the Apostolic Palace voting works? Is it possible to have 3 candidates?

In a (test) PBEM there was only the choice of voting for 2 candidates but in the end there were votes for 3leaders: Stalin, Hitler and Mussolini! (see the attached picture)

You can note that Stalin, even though elligible, abstained!
Spoiler :
(which means that Stalin probably was not allowed to vote for himself)
Note: this was a test of a PBEM and all those nations were played by AI.

Something flakey there. Only two candidates are normally available, the one who owns the AP (either the builder or the one who conquered the city with the AP in it) and the one with the largest number of votes. Yes, you can vote for yourself. Is this in a mod? If so, there may be different rules than normal. If not, it sounds downright weird.

It's not a MOD. It's a scenario but not a MOD, so all the basic BtS rules apply.

It is wierd isn't it?

It happens rarely, but its can happen that the votes get split between 3 candidates. I forget the exact mechanics of it, but it has to do with the vote coming a turn before the vote count. Votes are cast, one of the candidates becomes ineligible, and is replaced by a third candidate who shows up on the list of those receiving votes. Since Stalin did not vote for himself, you can be sure he was NOT eligible on the turn his votes were cast, but became eligible before th evotes were counted (thus an ineligible candidate got votes, which are shown in the voting results).
