Farm + Temple... cheaper than... umpteen bajillion hammers for AP.

Although the 2 hammer bonus for temples and monasteries can make it worthwhile to build AP if you don't think anyone with a religion you have will build it.

Agreeing, but to clarify: You don't have to build the AP to get the hammer bonus, you only have t be a member, which means have the AP religion as your state religion.

The AP religion doesn't even have to be your state religion to get the hammer bonus. Just so long as you have the AP religion in your cities and build the associated buildings.

Hey guys, I've got a newbie question for you. Can I get bonuses from a squares outside my cities radios but inside my cultural influence? In Civ3 you couldn't get anything but resources like that and only strategic and luxury (well i guess the rest simply weren't resources at the time). Is that still the case in Civ4? I'm running beyond the sword with latest patch.

It is the same as Civ3. You can get the resources if you build the right improvement on it and if you have a trade route (road or river or coast) to it. But you can't work it.

As AJ11 said you have to build the appropriate improvement on it but then you do get the resource (health, happiness, strategic for units) but not the tile bonuses. You can also build a fort on the resource to get the same benefit. If the resource is on a tiny island the fort is needed instead of the improvement to get the resource benefits. I also recommend building forts on Oil when you find it with Scientific Method even though you can't use it until Combustion. Gets it online immediately with Combustion.

It's pretty much the same as Civ3 except you have to build the specific improvement or the fort and not just road it. btw there is no "colony" function to get a resource outside your cultural influence.

You can but it would probably have to be a peace vassal. Since any of their cities that you capture are immediately razed, they can grow back to independence if you manage to capitulate them.

Does Napoleon declare at friendly? In my last game he declared on me at friendly while I was winning a space race. Now my first theory is that he dropped to pleased for 1 turn (he was friendly the turn before he declared) and in that 1 turn he decided to declare. My 2nd theory is that he does indeed declare at friendly.

Speaking of that, what is the order of attitudes the AI can have towards you?

Noone can start planning to war when at friendly, though they can atatck if they decided before reaching friendly and Cathy can be bribed.
Did you have any vassals? They ruin your diplomacy without telling you, basically if you had any vassals the friendly you saw was a lie :p

What exactly is.the vedic aryan event? How is it different from "6 x have spawned by your border"?
are they always the same unit type? Are they promoted? Are there always the same number of them? Do they behave differently that normal barbs?

I tried looking on these forums for the answer, but I can't read behind spoiler tags in this browser.

Vedic Aryans are ~6 barb archers that go after your capital. There are several events of that type, i.e atilla the hun and ~6 HA's. They aren't promoted, and they are always the same unit type.

Yes I had 1 vassal. Napoleon was at friendly for over 300 turns before he suddenly declared. I still think it might be the space race mechanism, I'd upload the save but I only have the finished game save. He definitely declared either at friendly or within 1 to 3 turns of going into pleased.

It has nothing to do with space, assuming there was no slip to Pleased (which sounds unlikely) then it has everything to do with your vassal.

When you have a vassal the AIs true disposition toward you is the average of what they think of you and what they think of your vassal(s), rounded down. So despite him being Friendly toward you if he was Pleased or less toward your vassal the average would be below Friendly allowing him to attack :p

Vassals run on very dumb mechanics unfortunately

BUG doesn't take into account the effect of vassals -- at least I've never seen it do so.

A couple years ago I was the most fun game of civ iv I ever played. The map was dotted with small lakes and I set up my cities, and built forts so that I could sail pretty much everywhere.

I just got another map with lots of small lakes, and I was overjoyed that I finally could do that again, so I set up my cities one off the coast (bad, I know) for the eventual forts but you no longer can sail from a fort into a city!!

When did that change?
How did that change?
How can I change it back?

First, make sure you're playing Beyond the Sword; in previous versions of the game ships could not enter forts.

Second, forts and cities can form canals that ships can sail through, but the length of a canal can be no more than 2 tiles--so two forts or a fort and a city, that's it. Maybe you sailed through two forts and found you couldn't sail into the city that constituted the third tile.
