Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

Hi folks - I'm trying to understand a point of play... the benefits that markets and grocers provide to a city that depend on "access" to various resources. Do those benefits (health, money) only accrue if the CITY itself has those resources (ivory, silk, bananas, whatevs) in its worked tiles, or does the city get the benefit if those resources exist anywhere in the civ (or through trade)?

The tile-specific benefits (hammers, food, etc) apply to the city which is working the tile. The strategic benefits (health, happiness, etc) apply to the entire civ.

The city has to be connected somehow though. If it isn't connected either via roads or sealanes, it won't get the benefit. Usually this isn't a problem because you tend to connect them fairly early on, but in the very beginning, for example your 2nd city won't get the health or happy bonus the capital has if it isn't connected to the capital yet.

I thought I would clarify the correct (but IMO not totally clear to the newbie) answer above. Both markets and grocers add 25% to gold generation of a city. This is city specific, so this one city gets 25% increase in the raw gold it produces. They also give happiness (markets) and health (grocers) benefits depending on whether the city has access to the relevant resource. They get this benefit if those resources exist anywhere in the civ (or through trade).

I will try to be straight to the point : the groceries always provide + 25 % income ;) health/happy benefits are provided to You emipre once You control 1 of that resource (You can controll 2 or more - knock Yourself out ! ^^ but it is always 1 is always sufficienct to provide that benefit ;) ) cheers ;) oh and there is no further benefits from controling more than 1 ;) (other than Your rivals are not controlling it ;) )

assuming Your city is connected to Your empire (colonies are connected after astronomy tech in case You are playin Joao - hope I've spelled it right) ;)

Sorry for asking such basic questions, i'm new

That's the problem: you're too new. I think one (sig or avatar) takes few days after registration and the other one needs you post at least 5 or 10 posts. Don't recall.

Maybe I hv mistakenly posted this as a new thread. So I'm copy pasting it again.

I am an avid AOE II player recently got huge interest in CIV iv. Installed Civ IV 1.61 patch.

In many screenshots I am seeing there is a turn counter (Showing how many turns played in the game) at the top right corner. But why on earth I am not finding any option to turn it on in my game !!? :crazyeye::confused::confused:

Is there any separate MOD to do this? Please help me as I have really started to like the game .. :)

BTS->BUG/BUFFY, etc.
Yes, just to expand on Merovech's answer a bit, you've likely seen screenshots using the BUG mod, which is so popular that pretty much everyone around here has it. You can find it here: http://civ4bug.sourceforge.net/

Welcome to CFC and your new obsession! :goodjob:

Well .. Thanks to all of you for such quick reply. Specially Sisitul for explaining it. Before I started playin Civ iv I went through ur guide as well as the official manual. It helped me a lot. I am enjoying Civ IV immensely. Though am playing chieftain only lol .. :p

Anywy .. So to get the turn counter there I need to install BTS and then BUG mod? God its probably a bit complicated for a newbie just to get a turn counter ..

Another Q: By installing BTS will there be any significant change in the game play? Wd I still be able to play the vanilla CIV4?

And what are the major changes this 'BUG MOD' do !?

Thanks in advance .. :)

BTS has additions and changes, most notably vassal states, the Apostolic Palace and a massively expanded espionage system. They don't cause gameplay to change much at all.
You can still play vanilla if you install BTS, but it wouldn't have the turn counter :p

BUG mod doesn't change gameplay, it just massively improve the games UI making ifnormation much more readily available.

Successfully installed BTS .. and I think BUG MOD 1.0 too .. (But didnt know in which folder it should have been installed .. It installed by default in 'documents/my games/BTS' folder probably)

* Anywy I am right now being able to play BTS 'only', CIV iv original and Warlord expansion not working, may be some problem with my installer :( .. Anybody can help me with a suitable torrent for BTS? .. :p

* Dnt know wheather the BUG MOD installed properly or not, but can see the turns as "5/750", but not as "Turn - 5" as I hv seen in some of the screenshots ! Is that due to a different mod?

* I hv seen normal game is now of 500 turns. But earlier in CIV iv it was of 460 turns probably. Does this change in BTS only? In BTS epic game is of 750 turns. How much was it in CIV Vanilla?

* It looks in chieftain it has become a bit tougher to play the comp opponents in BTS (I know its funny, but I hv played only one game of CIV so far, so even chieftain is tough for me :)) .. Is the BTS AI are tougher than the vanilla?

Phew !..

The current BUG mod version is 4.4. The proper location for it, usually, is C:\Program Files\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4\Beyond the Sword\Mods. You should then be able to load it by either (a) starting BtS, selecting "Advanced" then "Load a Mod". BUG (or whatever the folder under Mods containing it is named) should be in the list of mods you can select; or (b) create a BtS shortcut (easiest way--copy the existing one in your Start menu) and modify the Target by adding
Code:
 mod="BUG"
to the end, again where BUG is the name of the folder under Mods where you placed the BUG files.

No one here will help you download Civ or any of its expansions illegally. Pay for what you play so we keep getting future versions of Civ (hopefully better ones than Civ V).

Vanilla Civ IV and Warlords should both still work. BtS doesn't stop them from working. Just find the right executable (or shortcut to it) and fire it up.

If you are indeed running BUG you will see additional progress bars at the top of the screen: one to the left of your research bar for your Great General progress, another to the right of the research bar showing your Great Person progress. You'll also see a BUG options button at top left right next to the Event Log button.

AFAIK the number of turns is consistent across all versions of Civ IV: Quick=330, Normal=500, Epic=750, Marathon=1500.
* It looks in chieftain it has become a bit tougher to play the comp opponents in BTS (I know its funny, but I hv played only one game of CIV so far, so even chieftain is tough for me :)) .. Is the BTS AI are tougher than the vanilla?

Yes, as I recall the programmers at Firaxis beefed up the AI in each expansion pack. Once you get better at the game you can try my favourite mod, Better BUG AI, which combines BUG with the Better AI mod, further enhancing the AI. It's still not as smart as a human opponent, but it does keep the AI from many stupid things that annoyed me even on the lower difficulty levels.

The BTS AI is better than the Vanilla AI.

I do believe that sometime between Vanilla and BTS, the number of turns was increased.

Thanks Sisiutil .. :)

Surely I will try the 4.4 BUG Mod .. But before that do I have to install 3.19 latest patch for BTS? I have 3.03 BTS right now. To install 3.19 patch, do I hv to install all the previous patches or onlyinstalling the latest one will do?
