Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

Hi again
One of my cities had an unhappy citizen and the turn after it got four... and I can't understand the reasons.
First, they don't want to fight against people sharing their faith. But I'm only at war against judaistic civs... does that mean that because judaism is present in my city I get a unhappiness modifier?
Then, they want a liberal... what can I do?
Finally, they "lack open spaces" (not sure about the translation) If I had a lot of forests around the city I could understand but it's a growth city...

Yes, you got unhappiness in the city, when warring civ with religion present in the city, no matter if it's your state religion or not.

Not sure, liberal = emancipation? If yes, there are few options: switch into emancipation civic yourself (not recommended), bribe other civilizations to switch out of emancipation, use cultural slider/get more happy resources/get +happy buildings.

"lack open spaces" no clue what could it be. In what language you run civilization? Probably we have someone here who could translate this. :)

I run ROM AND which is translated in french, although not perfectly. The happiness modifier says that the citizens lack large places (they need more space)

Ok, about Emancipation unhappiness, see this post of mine: it explains it with the most clarity in term how it really works.

tl;dr basically unhappiness is function of your city population and how many cities in the world are under Emancipation. That's right, a civ under Emancipation that got 4 cities has much less impact than a nation with 15 cities.

We are crowded thing is a default unhappiness that comes with higher population. It is a natural limitation. 1 pop=1 angry face from crowding population.

Well, my game is in french so I doubt it could help more!

Is there a way to spread other civ's religion into your own civ?
Is there a way to build optimal roads? I mean, the workers are lazy and build roads so that they work as less as possible... then you have right-angle roads everywhere...

Tachy is French (Canadian) and there are other people around here who speak it, such as myself, so we can deal with screenshots or saves

Autospread and missionaries are the only way to spread a religion. Open borders with the civ whose religion you want. Most of the AIs, especially the religious fanatics, will send missionaries if you allow them. Once you have the religion in one of your cities you can spread it to the rest with your own missionaries..

You should manage your workers yourself. Your biggest advantage over the computer is that you have a brain. Use it. ;)

I know, but in the game I'm playing, someone found christianism without chosing it as his state religion, and it doesn't seem to naturally spread into my territory even with open borders.

But with all the movement penalties that I'm not fully aware of, it's quite hard to find the fastest route between two points!

Hmm. I don't know why they would want open spaces. I believe that if you load a save game in the English version, you will get the English message. You might try that. I'm guessing that wanting a Liberal is a truly horrible translation of wanting emancipation.

Natural spread does not require open borders or state religion. The likelihood of spread is affected by the distance to the Holy City and the existence of a shrine. It is true that it can take a long time.

Once a road exists between two tiles, there are no movement penalties except for crossing a river. That goes away once you know Construction.

I'm pretty sure that the English equivalent is "It's too crowded!" which, as I think was said above, is the built-in happiness cap based upon city size and difficulty level.

And, just a friendly reminder here to all beginners that no, building cottages out in the surrounding countryside will not help alleviate this. (Not directly, anyway...)

I'm just about positive that is not the case. "It's too crowded!" is the equivalent of the first one in the list "Il y a trop de monde !" (literally, there are too many people!). What else would generate 20 angry faces?

Huh, my mistake--should have read every entry. Pardonnez-moi.

I have never seen this before (in any language), and have no idea what it means...

TXT_KEY_ANGER_BIG_CITY +%d1_Change[ICON_UNHAPPY]: "We long for the open country!" +%d1_Change[ICON_UNHAPPY] : "Les grands espaces nous manquent !" +%d1_Change[ICON_UNHAPPY]: "Wir sehnen uns nach weitem, unverbautem Land!" +%d1_Change[ICON_UNHAPPY]: "Vogliamo una nazione aperta!" +%d1_Change [ICON_UNHAPPY]: "¡Echamos de menos el campo!"

Actually, a google search of "TXT_KEY_ANGER_BIG_CITY" got a hit for a discussion about ROM, so maybe it is something specific to this mod, but I still have no idea what it means.
