Religion spreads if there is the potential for a trade route between the city in question and the Holy City. E.g. if would exist assuming borders were open. The route does not have to actually exist. The spread is random. It is more likely the closer the city is to the Holy City. It is also more likely if the Holy City has a shrine.

Hello.

I just bought civ 4 from a second hand store. When I installed it it comes up with a GameSpy Comrade Login I need to do to play the game. When I follow the prompt to register a new gamespy account it says that it is an untrusted connection because the websites security certificate expired on 1/08/2012 11:59 a.m. And I also found an article saying gamespy has shut down. (http://pc.gamespy.com/articles/122/1227460p1.html)... does anyone know anything about this, and whether there is a way around it?

^^You don't need GameSpy to play the game. Simply untick the option for GameSpy while installing.

I have civ 4 installed on my computer and have never tried mods out. I do not have any of the civ 4 expansions. I basically want more civs and fun bigger earth map to play them all on. is there a mod for me and my situation?

Isn't GEM a mod called Giant Earth Mod? That might the thing you desire. Don't what it is; I heard of it.

Yeah but I'm not sure if there's a Vanilla (original/no expansions) version.. At this point though getting the expansions are totally worth it- if you find it it'll be like $20 for both of them + Colonization. I'd look on this site on the 'Downloads' tab and the navigation is pretty self-explanatory

Definitely! Sometimes it's advantageous, as a better location for that particular wonder may crop up.

Do vassals trade resources to other AIs? I vassalized half my continent and it seems like they're only trading with me, even though they have resources available that they could trade away.

Vassals can trade normally with other civs. AI attitude penalties still count though.

So, I wanted to install new scenarios to Civ 4, because I got tired of the ones pre-installed.
I downloaded 2 mods: Age of Discovery and World War I, from filefront.
I extracted the folders into civilization 4/MODS and ran the game.
I went to "Load A Mod", and both showed up.
I tried running both of them, when the game tells me to restart to load the mod.
I restart, see the Civ 4 loading screen (in 7 languages!) and nothing happens.
I tried to "Search for Updates" within the program, when it tells me to download
Patch_174.
The screen shows that the download is at 0%, and it has downloaded 0/-1 bytes.
What am I doing wrong?
P.S.: I am using Windows 7, on a 1-2 year old desktop.

Generally, the way to install an update is to download it (from this site for example) and run the executable. People have complained about the automatic update system.

You do not say what version you have, I think Age of Discovery needs BtS, which would be version 3.19.

Ok, I went to install the download (v1.61) because I don't have BTS, and isn't that something you pay for?
Anyway, I followed the link to the download, and then SmartScreen Filter told me it was unsafe and would not let me download.
