Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

War against heathens also requires the 'heathen' to have no cities with the AP religion. Regardless of what religion they are running a single 1 pop city with the AP religion makes them an AP member and prevents a dogpile resolution.

A lot of really silly things can block the resolutions, it really isn't uncommon for this to happen.

Daft question mayhaps, but how do I play the game without the DVD in?

I play on a laptop, and my battery only lasts about an hour with the DVD constantly running, as opposed to about 4 hours without.

Assuming it is Windows and not Mac you can just apply patch 3.19. That removes the need for the disk entirely.

If you are on a Mac there may not be a way to do it directly, since I seem to recall that it never got this. You could run the Windows version via Wine or whatever (and patch that version to 3.19, of course).

Really? As simple as that?

When I got BTS I tried downloading the latest patch using the in-game menu, but it kept getting stuck. So I meant to manually download and install, but forgot. Will do that now, thanks :goodjob:

Hi , i have a food distribution question.
currently in my capitol (Paris) i have 9 food being produced (this is what i count when i look at the 3 tiles being worked 5 + 2 + 2, and also this shows up in the 'overview screen' when i click the house/home icon in the top right set of icons). Each of the 3 tiles that are being worked also have 1 hammer each, so i have 3 production.
However, this city is currently building a Worker, and when i double-click the city to see the worker build bar (telling my how many turns left till the worker is complete and the resources , ie. food and production, being used to build the worker), i only see 5 food + 3 production.
Why doesn't it have 9 food? is this a possible bug? or what am i missing?

Any explanation would be great. And if i haven't done a very good job of explaining.. i'll take some screen shots.

Net (excess) food is what is used for both growth and production of workers/settlers.
Each population point eats 2 :food: per turn, and you have two pop.
So the net food in the city is 9 minus 4 = 5:food:

If you go to city screen where a worker/settler isn't being built and mouse over the food its shown pretty clearly, I don't know if its shown with a mouse over of food of the food on a city that is building a workers/settler though.

Awesome, thanks so much for the quick response. OK so each point of pop consumes two food. Got it. Makes sense now :)

if i have some pigs on a tile which is just out of reach from being a city workable tile, how do i get the most use out of it? should i build a pasture and connect a road from it to the city? how does that help exactly? i still won't be able to 'work' that tile right?

Yes, and the pig tile would have to be withing your cultural borders, otherwise the most you could do would be building a road to it. In the scenario you describe, if this was the only pig tile in your empire this would give you +1 :health: in every city, +2 :health: with a supermarket. If you had more than one pig tile you'd already have the health benefit and this additional pig tile would just give you one surplus resource to trade to other civs. But no, you would not be able to work that tile, not unless it falls within the "big fat cross" of tiles of one city.

Frankly, that is a real waste. Food is very big in this game and pigs are one of the best food tiles. If I can't get a strong food tile (i.e. a tile with 4 :food: or more) within one city's BFC, I regard it as a sign that I have to completely reconsider my city positioning. If I'm conquering and the AI has put that food tile out of reach (unusual but not out of the realm of possibility for the wacky AI :crazyeye:), I'll consider razing and founding a new city in a better position.

Hi. Two questions:

1) Is there anyway to reset the Hall of Fame?

2) I have a friend who is having a compatibility difficult between Windows 8.1 and Civ IV. Does anyone know any interesting thread\message regarding this topic?

i have a tile with 2 food and 2 comm. for some reason my production goes up 1 if i 'un-work' it. why is that? i have attached some screenshots, one when it is being worked and one when it isn't being worked.
is there an article that explains the mechanics of food/prod/comm and working them etc in detail that explains this kind of stuff? i found the tutorial not very in-depth

shot when it isn't being worked - see the production goes up 1.

When you are taking pop off the field they get turned to citizen specialists which give 1 hammer each.

1) I believe if you delete the files out of C:\Users\your_name\Documents\My Games\Beyond the Sword\Replays, that will remove all HoF games.

2) I'm running Win 8.1 and Civ IV with no issues and didn't have to do anything fancy to get it working. Maybe try the Tech Support forum.

Needless to say, usually working a citizen specialist is a bad idea, working a tile or running another kind of specialist will give you far more return.

I don't know of any articles about that, but they may be there. There isn't that much to food and production, soon you will know it all. With the exception of whipping and overflow, but save that for later, when you are ready for it. The are articles about that.

One other subject concerning food that is not immediately obvious is that unhappy citizens still eat food (bad!), except when you are building a settler or worker. So if you can't solve your unhappiness problem it may be a good time to build a settler or worker.

About the pigs question from a previous post, if there is a pigs tile nearby, but outside the BFC of all of your cities, you should seriously consider founding a new city to take advantage of it. Finding pigs should make your city-settling mouth water.

The unhappy citizen(s) still eat food while the city builds a settler or worker. City growth stops and excess food goes into production while building settlers and workers, so if you have unhappy citizen(s) due to whip overflow (or some other temporary reason), it may be good time to build a settler or a worker.

Unhappy citizens also increase maintenance for your cities. So a general rule is to avoid unhappy citizen(s)--usually by whipping them away (2 or more population whips).

I have two spice resources, and i want to trade one of them with Cyrus from Persia. When i go to the trade screen though it only allows me to trade Gems with Cyrus. Is this because perhaps Cyrus already has spice?

what if the pigs were quite inland with no river in sight (ie no commerce). would it be reasonable to build a city with the pigs in it, and then just build cottages for the commerce?

Are your spices in red or don't they appear on the trading screen at all?

Pig is always worth settling. A common rule of thumb is that every city needs a food resource and every food resource needs a city. What other improvements you should build in the city depends on the individual circumstances, but assuming it's all grassland cottage spam might indeed be in order.

I agree with the Knoedel meister, you should be able to find a good purpose for it, be it cottages, mines, specialists, or as a whipping unit producer. Food gives you the flexibility to do a lot of things, take advantage.
