Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

Okay, total boards newbie here. I'm trying to run FfH2 on my Steam version of Civ 4, and I've installed both the game and patch o to "C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\sid meier's civilization iv beyond the sword\Beyond the Sword\Mods", but it's not working. Is there something I'm doing wrong? And does this have anything to do with patch 3.19 I keep hearing about but finding nothing useful on?

Try installing the mod in My Documents/My Games/Beyond the Sword.

Patch 3.19 is linked to in the thread below this one, if you are having trouble finding it.

Yes but... what IS patch 3.19? And is it compatible with the Steam version? And where do I even put it? (For the record, I'm on Windows 8.1)

I believe we had that problem in the HoF, some steam-users were not able to run the BUFFY mod. I believe you have to "downgrade" your steam-version to the one that was sold on disks. If I understood it right, steam should offer you another CIV4 version that is called "beta" or whatever, get that version and you'll have the 3.19 disk version, allowing you to run the mods from this site.

I've loaded up the beta and it still doesn't seem to want to load FfH. Do I need to download 3.19 now or did the Steam beta come with it? And if I DO need to download it, where do I put it? Every source seems mysteriously silent on THAT front.

You can see which version of CIV you got when you start the game, and click on one of the options under "advanced" .

Regarding the mod in specific, it's better if you ask in the mods-forums, as chances are a lot higher that you'll get some support there.

Well, I seem to be using 3.19, so THAT'S cleared up. Thanks for the help so far. I'll consult the mod forums.

It's called Let's Play Civ 4 on Deity 9, part 1 of 5.
He plays Tokugawa, his 6th or 7th attempt on that map, and finally wins.

Does anyone know where is the civfanatics topic with that game, and how to find it? He mentions it many times.

I am also interested in how to find the topics for his Let's play Civ 4 on Deity 10, 11, 12, etc. IOW, I'm interested in reading the discussions for all of them.

Does Woody3's heal stack with the medic promotions even if they are on different units? That is do two units, one of them with all three medic promotions, the other with all three Woodsman promotions, have when put on the same tile the exact same effect as a single unit with all of those promotions? Because if so making one super medic is highly inefficient compared to just splitting up the woody and medic line onto two units, isn't it?

Short answer: Nope.

Somewhat longer answer: Each wounded unit will get "healing" from whichever one unit will help them the most. So if a wounded unit is stacked with a Medic1/Woodsy3 unit, but a Medic3 is the next tile over, the unit will use the Medic3's 40% bump instead of the Woodsymedic's 30% bump.

EDIT: My math may be all screwy... I'm all sick and brain is off.

EDITY EDIT: Okay, 40% is with Woodsy3 and Medic3. So my example is all wrong. Basically a Medic1/Woodsy3 will give you 25% on the same tile, and a Medic3 will give you 25% one tile away. But the concept of "whichever healing unit will heal us the most" still applies.

Ok here is the link to that Strategy forum topic with the Tokugawa game from Youtube: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=416441 .

More importantly, here is the method I used to find this (I didn't actually have to use Google, although Google with the right search words can get you very far too). First I looked at the Youtube video post date, which is in April 2011. Then I went to the Civ 4 Strategy and Tips forum which is here on Civfanatics. I used Sort at the top, "From the Beginning" so I listed all posts page by page ever made there. Then I go through the pages of posts on the Strategy topic to find where April 2011 last made posts approximately are. Chris/Absolute Zero has played alot of Nobles Club/Immortal University etc games and some other games people post for the public. So I looked at topics around April 2011 until I found the same game.

If you use that method you can find almost any topic here at the forums in the right time frame of year month etc., but you have to be careful the method isn't fail-proof such as if a topic was "necroed" and posted in years later you might want to use the forum "Search" button instead, also sometimes results could be time consuming but it only took me a few minutes for this one.

Oh, it's not that bad. It's not great, but it's not as bad as AIDS. I can sometimes find stuff through the search function.

@ Tachy : Ok I did some digging and found nothing on forums so I ran a simulation on one of my games and the results are as follows :

2) View attachment 336225

It seems that the ship's cargo is not taken into consideration by the game mechanics since I've gained only 2 points per each transport I've sunk no matter how many more units were on board ;)

Does the transport (and embarked Units) not have to be inside your or their Cultural borders to count towards War wariness anyway?

You certainly have a chance, but usually you need very good land or (at least) one of the significant early wonders to get a lead, e.g. the Pyramids or maybe GLH with lots of islands around the main continent, TGL to grab more scientists for the Astro bulb etc. At least securing these are more important than on maps where you can also take it from the AI early and where you can abuse trading. Especially with only a small island to settle you might have to rely on an SSE type game with the Pyramids.

Just won a space victory by launching the spaceship early without all the spaceship parts. Launch screen said 80% chance mission success. First time I've ever launched early. Does this mean that there is a chance of failure after the spaceship has been launched? Has anyone ever failed a space victory?

Hey mate,
Not 100% sure in CIV4 but in previous versions of the game yeah it was possible for the mission to be unsuccessful.

Hi all,
Just got me a copy of CIV 4 Warlords expansion and just wanted to ask a silly question. Is it basically CIV4 with added goodies..........or is it a variation of CIV4 skewed towards warmongering and missing other elements of the game? If its the former then guess no point me playing standard CIV4 anymore yeah?

Warlords is Civ 4 with added goodies. Conventional wisdom is to get Beyond the Sword (BtS), which has everything Warlords does (less the scenarios) plus more goodies.
