Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

Is it better to fight a war during a golden age or wait until after it is over. I was within 2 turns of starting a war and finished the Taj Mahal, which gave me a golden age.
Do you normally fight the war during the Golden Age, or wait until the age is over and use the Golden Age to build up more troops and funds.

I wouldn't care, GA isn't nearly as big a deal as it was in Civ3. If you're not sure you can easily win the war, I guess you might as well use the GA to build a few extra units before attacking. Just don't let it occur late in a war when War Weariness is keeping tiles from being worked.

:crazyeye: where can i find info on using the tool bars (the ones on most new mods with dots, triangles, squares & such) and what does the action icon mean that has the hand holding the scolls and what it does(total realism mod )

This sounds like a specific issue with a mod. The best place to ask questions about it would be the thread in which the mod was introduced to you.

I can't answer the question because I'm not familiar with the mod.

Couple of really, really quick questions: Pls help!

1) How do I change a certain Civ's default "color"? Is there a mod out there for this, and if so, which mod is the most reliable?

2) How can I change the default starting "name" whenever I launch a game? (it seems to be defaulting to my Computer's Name) - i'm guessing there is a file somewhere out there i need to modify - which one is it specifically?

Thanks all!

Hmm, I'm not sure about the direct way, but I DO know that if you play multiplayer games (Direct IP), then the name that you last used there will be the default for all new games that you start (until you change your name in Direct IP). :)

Oh, and Roland, here's the results of my first test. I must admit I was surprised how accurate and true to randominity they were. I'm hoping to do a few more hundred-unit battles just to be sure, though. But it looks like it could just be my tendancy to get bad luck in singular battles. ;)

EDIT: File attached.

How is the type of great person you get defined? I get ALOT of prophets.

What does forcing specialists in cities do?

Is there any way to open up the entire map at once, showing the founding of enemy/allie cities as they happen?

The type of great person is determined by the type of specialist. Each turn you have 1 specialist in the city it puts 3 GPP points into the "pot", as do wonders. When the pot is full the chance of getting each type is proportional to the number of GPP for each type you have acumalated in that city.

Forcing a specialist will mean that that specialist will stay working in that city untill you turn it of.

You can see the whole map by zooming out (I use the mouse wheel), or using the hot key (f11?). You cannot see the founding of cities that are not in the line of sight of one of your units of cultural boundries.

Why you'd want to do such a thing (when at the very least you can build wealth) is a bit bemusing. But still - if you really want to do such a thing, you can double click on the city, left-click on all the items in the build queue until it's empty, and then exit the city screen (Esc). The city will then continuously build nothing until you manually reactivate it. ;)

At the moment I don't have the wealth or research options and I don't want to waste money building things which I have to maintain. I am doing the left click in the build queue but it is not working! Strange cause I remember doing it in the past but it used to work, however I have now installed the latest patch but that should not be affecting it right?

Why would you want to? Most building have no down sides, and later on in the game you can build money, reaserch or culture.

I think there is a way however, invoving no selecting anything when you finish something and get the popup, then left arrow to another city or something. It is not something I would recomend.

Maintenance costs are based soley on the number of cities and their population; buildings do not generate maintenance costs although a few can reduce them.

Indeed, maintainence is a lot different in Civ4 than it was in Civ3. ;)

Personally, I think it's a very bad idea to ever stop producing things in any city. If you haven't already won the game, then you can always do with more "stuff", whether it's buildings, units, or wonders. :)

I have built all the buildings in a city. I still don't have the wealth option and producing units involves maintenance costs. I don't want to build anything in a couple of cities. Btw, this is Warlords not the original Civ IV.

Thanks mate. :goodjob:

So If I have loads of priests working in a city, will that city be more likely to produce prophets? Thats probably why I'm getting loads of prophets.

Yeap. You can see the ratio of points deposited so far by holding the mouse over the GPP bar.

Oh right. I didn't know that. I'm still learning.

Hello,

Is it possible to play multiplayer (at least, two!) on the same computer or it's only possible via internet or local network?

Thanks!

Eric

@zeric

Yes, it is called hotseat. Player 1 plays, press ENTER (screen turns black), player 2 presses ENTER and starts their turn. You can do this with up to 18 players, but it takes a long time I would imagine.

Hmm, it might be that wealth requires Currency first? Not sure though...

Question: after starting a game, is there an option similar to Civ3's Ctrl-Shift-Q that allows you to start on a map with the same settings (but different AIs)? I looked for this in the manual and couldn't find it. Regenerate Map isn't available after the first turn, and I suspect it keeps the exact same AI opponents in. I'm wondering if there's something where I can duplicate the Custom Game screen settings without having to go back and re-insert my name, leader, etc.
