Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

depends on map size.
On standard, you need 3 temples for a cathedral. meaning 3x3 cities total for 1 cathedral in each legendary city.

Oooooh, so you can only build one cathedral per religon? I thought you could build each one in each city for a total of 50% culture x 5-7 cathedrals to win the culture war. I only have about 150 turns left, I don't think I am going to make it anymore.

No, you can only build one for every 3 temples (standard map). So to build one in each culture city you need to have a total of 9 cities all with temples. If you hover the pointer over the cathedral button if it is grayed out it will say something like 4/6 temples, meaning that you have built one cathedral and need to build 2 more temples to make another one.

No, you can build one cathedral for each religion in each wanabee legendary city.
That makes 3 cathedrals, needing 3x3 temples = 9 cities required (standard map, it's 12 for large maps)

You can, and should.
This + liberalism (+100%) + ermitage (in either the smallest culture goer or the second best if you have a few GA to help you finish) can make a total +550%.
In this situation, and running the culture slider at 100%, you can often get 1000+ culture in a totally cottaged city.

I only have about 150 turns left, I don't think I am going to make it anymore.
If you manage the 1000+ culture/turn (or even just 400) you should be fine.
You said you were above 30k, and now you should have all the culture flowing in. You will be fine.

Hi cabert nice to see you again.

I have a question.

when a samurai (2 1st strikes) attacks an archer (1 1st strike), does the samurai have one 1st strike cancelled out or it has both of the 1st strikes cancelled out?

Thank you.

Btw, I just achieved my first cultural victory on Warlords difficulty.

hi!

I have a question.

the samurai has one first strike above the archer, so he gets it.
I don't know exactly how it works with first strike chances though.
I assume that there is a test first to check how many first strikes there finally are for each one, and only then there is a substraction :
(most FS - less FS) applicable for the one with the most.

Thank you.
you're welcome

:goodjob: I hope you didn't need to wait for the 20th century!

How about the skrimisher? 1-2 first strikes

so is it 1 or 2?

I have two quick questions...

1) What do the patches do? Should I install them?

2) When the unit bonus says something like +100 vs mounted or +50 vs melee... I thought that was for any battle, which didn't make much sense to attack a +50 axeman with another +50 axeman, but this http://www.civfanatics.com/civ4/info/units/ says that it's only when attacking, so I guess that already answers my question for me... It gives spearmen more to do than in Civ3 so that's cool. :-)

they correct the bugs, mostly + they try to improve balance (with some success), so yes install them

hum, that's not totally correct.
spearmen get +100% vs mounted, regardless of being defender or attacker
HA get a bonus vs catapults on attack only. You need to read the description exactly.

Here is a long list of all the changes, fixes, and updates the various patches will accomplish (including some gameplay tweaks). The short answer, IMHO, would be yes, it is definitely worthwhile to patch (and you won't 'lose' anything aside from exploits anyway AFAIK).

As to attack bonuses, you have to be a bit careful about that one. Try to note whether a unit says "+50% attack against X" or just simply "+50% against X." For example, chariots get a bonus only when attacking axes, but not when defending against them (their tooltip info says "+50% attack"). Most units will just generically say "+X% against X," in which case they do indeed get the bonus when attacking or defending (e.g. anti-mounted always get +100% against mounted units, regardless of whether attacking or defending, IIRC). [Also, note that these bonuses are applied against the opponent, as opposed to toward your unit, so actually a +100% conditional bonus (i.e. not a Combat-promotion permanent bonus) would actually be applied against your opponent's strength (and would halve it) as opposed to augmenting (doubling) your own unit's strength. Relatively minor, but good to be aware of IMHO.]

Nicely done, cabert. :)

Yes you should install them. They fix bugs, add features and alter small things about the game to increase balance. I have not found any downside to any patch.

MOST unit bonuses work both ways, in attacking and defending, so with an axeman attacking an axeman the bonuses cancel each other out. Some bonuses, like the cariot vs. axeman in warlords only work when attacking, but this is the exception rather than the rule.

You can see all the bonuses before you attack by holding down alt and holding the mouse over an enemy unit.

Vista is a much more demanding operating system. It needs a very good computer to run smoothly, so maybe that's the reason for the choppy videos. Have you already installed the various patches for civ4 on your new computer? The patches improved the video performance of civ4.

The Technical Support subforum is the best place to go for help with technical problems.

They fix bugs and balance issues. Yes, install them.

You can find the patches and their descriptions here.

It doesn't say there that it's only for attacking. Some bonusses only work when attacking, some always work. The civilopedia entry of the unit will make that clear.

The archer 50% city defence bonus only works when defending a city. The grenadier 50% attack bonus versus riflemen only works when attacking riflemen. The axemen 50% bonus versus melee units only works when fighting melee units (offensively or defensively). You can find this in the descriptions of the bonus in the ingame civilopedia.

Why do some wonders produce double the printed culture rate? For example, the Pyramids produce 8/turn, but they count as 16 towards my city's cultural rate. As far as I know, I do not have any cultural bonuses active (but I am playing Catherine). How is this figured?

All building double their culture value after 1000 years.

almost all : the academy (and probably the military academy) don't.
The "free" buildings from wonders don't double either.

Anonymously volunteering answers to anonymous questions about a computer game is a cutthroat business.

Seriously though, I think it's great that people like you (and lord parkin and a few more) answer so fast so many questions, just for the love of the game !

Yes, I probably should follow a course on this to keep up. The competition in this field is fierce. ;)
