Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

Thank you! (You didn't quote anyone so I assume you meant me).

Are AI leaders programmed to follow certain tech paths? For example, do Monty and Alex pursue military techs more than Gandhi and Mansa? Izzy the Witch clearly goes for the religion founding techs, but is that a function of her being Izzy or merely her starting with Mysticism?
I think that there definitely are some programmed tendencies (all with a bit of randominity though). For instance, Tokugawa seems to usually go for the naval techs and naval wonders.

i don't know how much of that is programmed, but i have noticed some tendencies in tech patterns. when i'm aiming for cultural victory, if i get beat to music, it's usually by Liz. gandhi really loves researching mass media and building the UN; mansa and asoka do too, but to a lesser extent. i can't remember the last time anybody besides mansa beat me to philosophy (disclaimer: i don't often play random opponents).

i have a question about this forums avatars. can i upload one from my computer to use or do i have to use a preset one?

mine's uploaded from my pc. i didn't bother to check if there were any hello kitty ones already at CFC, i rather doubt it.

Each tech has one or more flavor tag(s) (religion, culture, military etc.) in its description. Each leader in turn has one or two flavor modifiers (Isabella just uses religion) which increase the odds that a religion of that flavor is researched... There is no programmed tech path though since this would screw most mods...

No you can't :p you need 25 more posts to do that - but no spam please ;)

i saw that, but my guess (didn't check code of course, it's a foreign language to me) was that it had to do with what they pick to build in a city. one of the flavors is growth, i interpreted that as settlers/aqueducts and such. but i guess growth would be techs that give you those buildings instead? interesting, thanks.

Actually its both :) when the AI looks for a tech to research it looks at the flavor(s) associated with the tech and when it chooses which building to build it takes into account the building's flavor types (there is also a flavor attached to the GP actions so that a religious leader is e.g. more likely to use a great prophet to actually build a shrine...)

No, I'm certain barnetti meant me.

And who am I to argue with a legend? Has anyone played the Barbarians scenario? Is it fun? I liked China and Mongols but Alexander was boring.

Wow, you're both getting dillusional. But I can't blame you. Being in the presence of a legend like me should drive anyone mad! :dubious: :twitch: :twitch: :dubious:

He ain't lying, I truly did feel strange and disoriented the last time I was in Amsterdam.

you should stay away from our grass. it is only meant for the cows. ;)

But seeing that al those civ gods are visiting here. Does that mean I can make some wishes?
I don't want much. Only world domination. I know, it is cliché, so conquest is fine too. :D

That's simple. Build lots of units, pick a neighbor and crush them. Pick another neighbor. Repeat.

I've been searching for a post addressing this, but I can't find any... does anyone know what "triggers" the change in victory/defeat sounds from the normal sounds to the longer, bass-er victory sound and the DUH-da-dah strings?

Is it having a warlord attached to a unit? That seemed to do it for me in my last game, but I'm wondering if that's just coincidence. Is it discovering Composites maybe? Or after building your first armored unit? I have no idea, because all of those things happened so close to each other in my last game, and I haven't played Civ 4 long enough to figure this out through trial and error.

Thanks!

Browsing through the original Civ IV folders, I found a piece of music which runs for nearly 2 min called UN. I've never heard that in the game, not even when I build the UN or when there are elections (although I've never had a diplo victory). So, does anyone know what is that?

No, it is the era you are in. Every two eras it changes.

What? your not going to fulfill my wish? I have to do it al by myself?
I think I'll become an atheist. stupid civ gods. ;)

Ingrate! Frankcor put a curse on your enemies so that they would be confused and unable to plan strategies or fight wars effectively. How can you not appreciate such an overwhelming blessing?
