Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

ok thx for help. the problem is that we are playing generally at night and he lives with family :P

Maybe you could play a multiplayer game where you're both in the same team. That way, you'd be able to see his empire and thus see what things he does with his civilization.

A good idea, as long as its just you and him against several ai nations, and not "people" multiplayer......playing real mp games vs real humans isn't really a good way to learn (I imagine it would put many a newbie off for good)

Oh, yes, that was what I meant. A friendly multiplayer game of a team of you two against some AI civilizations.

Ummm.... I played a game as rome once and I belined Iron working. I also had horse so I could build chariots. Isabella was starting very close to me and founded a religion (hiduism i think) I declared war on her as soon as got my first preat and two chariots and destroyed her keeping only the holy and capital (which has acess to a lot of resources) However I found myself paying huge maintenace cost. ( at zero percent research and I am still in the red)

How could I have prevented this? Build more cottages? I did and found myself getting a +1 gold a zero percent. In fact the only way I can keep my economy afloat is by taking (and razing) cities.

hmm? you only took 2 cities and your economy ruined that bad? maybe you built too many city of your own. tips: get code of Laws as soon as possible and rush courthouses. Since both roman leaders are organized you can build them faster

ive only been playing IV for a bit, but whats the best early way to boost your tax income without sacrificing too much research. i miss my marketplaces and banks...

I've seen a few people making dotmaps and they are able to see a large part of their continent and still see the gridlines. When I zoom out it will be really fast and I can't see the gridlines anymore which is really annoying. what I mean with this is even when I zoom out a little the gridlines will dissapearer.

Does this matter on computer specs or is it something else?

sempron 2400
Radeon 9250
1gb memory

sorry about my english.

EDIT:

while playing I came to another question:

The color of my culture is light brown and I have a hard time seeing it, is it possible for me to change what type of color your culture border is?

can someone tell me what the bonuses/penalties are for both the AI and user for each difficulty level? thanks. :crazyeye:

Cottages on tiles beside rivers are very helpful. Also, any of the precious metals (gold, silver, gems). Once there's no more goody huts to pop for gold, you can always capture barb cities (good XPs for your units gained as well). If you war against an early neighbour, capturing their cities or, failing that, pillaging their tile improvements also provides gold, which lets you boost the science slider for a while.

No, Firaxis mucked up something with the graphics in the Warlords 2.08 patch. Try turning on the flying camera by editing Civ's .ini file (sorry, I'm not at my Civ computer right now or I'd give you exact instructions; try searching for "flying camera"). When you zoom out, activate the flying camera (Ctrl+Alt+F, IIRC) and the gridlines will appear.

They are in the file Firaxis games/Civ Iv/Assets/Xml/handicapinfo

I'd cut and paste the originals, but I've messed around with mine a lot so that doesn't help you.......

Where do I fnd some information about civ's treats and how do they work when there's a combat promotion?

Civ traits? The information can be found in the civilopedia in the section leaders.

How do they work when there is a combat promotion? I don't quite understand the question. Maybe you're talking about the aggressive trait where some units get the combat promotion for free. In that case every melee and gunpowder unit gets a free combat promotion when the construction of the unit is finished and any experience can be used to get other promotions, also promotions that need the combat promotion as a prerequisite.

what means X in the:
Combat Odds: X %
?

It is the odds that your unit will win the battle, given in percent. "Percent" translating roughly to "out of" "100", in this specific case the X would represent the number of times you should theoretically win if the battle were repeated 100 times. The idea being that this will give you a good approximation of how likely you are to win this particular battle. For example, at 50% odds you would win about half the time (i.e. 50 out of 100), at 75% odds about three times in four, at 90% odds about nine times in ten, etc.

Hope that helps.

Thanks, Roland Johansen, that's exactly what I wanted to know.Sorry, for an instance I forgot the right place of the traits. Thanks for helping me remind it.

I do not have any questions, rather I would like to thank everyone who has been posting. For that matter I thank the question askers as well because they wondered about the same things I did.

Though I've been a Civ player since it came out this version has really expanded and enhanced the game. I've won once via the space race, but that was at a very lower level and pre Warlords. I have played a lot, but always stop at some point because it seems somehow that I was just not really doing it right.

Well, I may not be on my way to defeating the AI's at Diety level, but I believe that all of you have provided me with a huge boost that will enable me to feel comfortable with my strategy.

One thing I've learned is that my usual idea of never fighting any wars, or at least not starting any has been a handicap. Trying to research all the techs alone has also been a bad idea.

I'm going to start anew and try Monarch level (been at Prince) I think. Too bad I don't have more time to play. Whoever invented this "work" business should be roundly condemmed.

Thanks for the help and I will continue to read things here.

Welcome to civfanatics mylinar. :band: [party]

I also know the feeling that you haven't done the perfect strategy and want to stars anew to do better. I've started far more games than I've finished. Especially when I was still learning the game. Not because I was losing, but just because I thought about a new tactic. With the second expansion pack, the latter parts of the game should also become more interesting, so I can't wait till that appears in the shops. Lately, I've been completing the games that I've started, but still the early game is more appealing than the late game (to me), so I really hope that the expansion pack 'Beyond the sword' delivers that which it promises.

1) Does anybody know if it is possible to print the civilopedia, so I can read it completely without being into the game?

2) The CIV4-Warlords Manual is the same as the CIV4, I mean, is there any difference from one to the other?

Hi - can someone please tell me how to get units onto my ships? I'm trying to get my Settler on to a Caravel, but it's not happening. Any step by step instructions would be great! Thanks. :goodjob:
