Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

What do the speed settings do?

Like, I would like it if technology took longer to research but production was the same, is there a setting like this?

Hi, I'm brand new to Civ IV, and I have a really basic question:

Is there any way to choose your leader at the beginning of the game? I've tried clicking on the photo and pressing left and right on my keyboard but to no avail.

A related question: is there any way to choose your civilization?

And finally: can you also choose the civilizations/leaders of the AI?

Basically, are all the civilizations/leaders assigned randomly and there's no way you can choose except starting the game over, or is there something I should be clicking that I've somehow overlooked?

Thanks!

The speed settings add more turns to the game; research and builds take correspondingly longer, so it isn't exactly what you're looking for. The main difference is that units still move as fast as at normal (or any other) speed. This means that units take longer to become obsolete. The slower speeds, then, lend themselves to warmongering.

Sounds like you're just encountering a little trouble with the interface. Yes, of course you can choose your civ and your leader. You click on the list of civilizations on the left to choose them, then click on the "photo" of the leader, then go down to the bottom right and click "Next". You can also select "Single Player" (IIRC), then "Custom Game" and choose your leader from a drop-down list.

I'm sorry, I'm not at my game computer right now, or I'd give you more exact instructions. I'll try to remember to reply again later unless someone else beats me to it.

After playing around with the "Custom" screen I finally found that drop-down menu you were talking about. I don't know how I could have missed it! Thank you so much.

Quick question:

I'm having trouble with my laptop turning off during Civ4 and I want to know if there's a way to autosave after X number of turns. Sometimes I forget and it's a pain going back to redo so many turns because the computer shut off.

you have to go to the civ folder, usually C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\My Documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4

and then look for the CIV Configuration Settings, once you click that you want to look for
; Specify the number of turns between autoSaves. 0 means no autosave.
AutoSaveInterval = X

X being how many turns you want to autosave after

Evenin, all.
i have just got into these forum thingies. How do I get a little pik to show. I believe they are called avatars?
And I always seem to hungry for iron, am I doing something wrong, or is it just a twist of fate.

Go to "My Account" at the top of the page. On the left, click "Edit Avatar." You can select an avatar or upload a custom one.

As for the iron, yeah it's a much needed resource for any game. You might have to go out an take it from your neighbors. Or make a trade for it with a friend.

I'm wondering, since I haven't been on here in a long while... CE and SE. I saw people talking about this in the strategy section and I can only think that they are referring to eras.

I'm not able to see your pics but if you hover your mouse over the oil it should have a popup saying what is needed to "get it".

1. What does the % showing on my city info mean?
I understand all the other icons, growth and current production, but have never known what that %number meant.

I can see the pics if I wait about 15 seconds. There is a well on top of it and it has a railroad.
This makes no sense to me either. Double click on a city and see if there is a tiny oil icon at the right side.
EDIT: ZombieWail: What?

1. What does the % showing on my city info mean?

Hello, and welcome to the forums.

If you mean the percentage number shown above your city name in the map view, that's the defense bonus of your city. Things like walls and castles add to this bonus.

The fact that you can trade for oil means that it is not connected to your capital in some way. Upload a savegame if you want further help.

I'm wondering, since I haven't been on here in a long while... CE and SE. I saw people talking about this in the strategy section and I can only think that they are referring to eras.

CE normally means Cottage Economy, an economy based on numerous cottages and SE means Specialist Economy, an economy based on farms and specialists.

It shows the percentage of your culture in the city. When the percentage is below 50% and the center tile is within the culture radius of one of the cities of that foreign civilization, then the city can flip.

Edit: scienide09 could also be right. If the percentage is close to the city name, then it has the meaning that he mentions. In case it is close to the culture bar, then it is the percentage that I mention.

By the way, welcome to civfanatics! :band:

I see that you edited. It did not help. There are three different percents that you could be talking about.
