Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

When I trade technologies I've been using the large folded, color display that came with the game to show me respective values. I'm worried that through game patches, the display is out of date. Is there an easier way of getting the information within the game itself?

BTS question: I have a local lan behind Linksys router attached to a cable moden, and a couple of friends have the local lan and router thru a cable moden or thru a DSL modem. When we try to play together on-line, we never see a port number and none of us can connect to a game any one of us starts. The game comes up on the multiplay game screen and we see each other in the internet lobby, but when we create a game, the host ping is [unknown].

Any solutions for this problem? Do I need to configure my router differently or my lan setup?

First of all, welcome to civfanatics! :band:

I think that the people in the Technical Support forum can help you far better with this type of problem.

warlords only, I don't have bts
Is it worth the purchase in your opinion?

I was on archipelago [sic?] so I was able to invade before astronomy. I'm pretty sure that was the exact issue. I just never noticed it before because I have never had the chance to make a large scale sea invasion before astronomy. Also, MaMu of Mali, the tech piggy he is, traded me railroad long before I would have researched it myself.

I was able to get there because our cultural borders touched. I think the link broke when I invaded the city and dropped it's culture to zero.

In my opinion, BTS is really worth its money. You should use the official and unofficial patches after installation though.

Yes, it probably has to do with ocean tiles blocking your trading routes with your home continent. If you want to be sure of it, then show us a savegame and we'll confirm.

Aargh, purple text, my poor eyes, why torture the poor people who are willing to help you...

To answer your question: The tech tree, it has the research cost. You can open it with F6 while you're negotiating and it will show up.

I have a newbie question. When I try to add a custom unit and I am in the process of editing the xml files, I can not save my work, I am told access denied. Any suggestions???

Apparently you are either trying to edit wrote protected files or your user account is set up so that you cannot edit those files. In either case you will have to set write access either for the user account globally or at least for the files you want to edit. Please do not edit the game files themselves but rather copy them to the right location in your custom assets directory and edit them there - you'll enjoy Civ longer if you do that ;)

Even easier than RJ's answer, when you are in the diplomacy screen, just mouse over the techs, and you will get their research cost.

This could be a newbie question or a bts question, I figured it fit best here. I just bought BTS I decided to take a archipelago map to try to test out the new features. They kept killing me on pangea. So anyway, how much do you have to spy on somebody before you can steal a tech? Does that option ever open up? but my real question is how exactly do corporations work? I think I met all the requirements but my GE still won't build his HQ. What am I still missing? I have gold and railroad in the building I want to build it in. does it count as a national wonder or something?

edit* and how the heck to you keep them from backdooring you all the time and trade embargoing you? they always want like a iron, a copper and a horse plus 17 gold per turn for like rice or something. and if I do make a trade then 10 turns later they always cancel.

The AI can be quite aggressive when you don't have a large enough army. Take a look at the power graph (F9 screen) to see how strong you are compared to your neighbours.

So anyway, how much do you have to spy on somebody before you can steal a tech?

That depends on the various spying bonuses and penalties you enjoy with that AI civilisation. The cost for stealing the technology is not the same in each city. However, the cost is directly related to the research cost of the technology. So a technology costing 5000 research points to research will cost something close to 5000 espionage points to steal. You can get that many points by building a lot of espionage buildings and running a high espionage slider. Instead of researching, you're spying.

If you heavily invest in espionage and try to get many espionage bonuses, then you can get a really good espionage bonus and spying can be cheaper than researching.

If you want to know a lot about the details of spying, then you should read this strategy article/discussion. There are several interesting posts in that thread. Some of the posts might be a bit technical.

There are several requirements to found a corporation headquarters
-You need to have the enabling technology
-You need to have the corporation technology
-You need the appropriate great person, each great person needs a different great person
-You need to run the appropriate civic. That means, you don't use the State Property civic
-There is a bug in BTS 3.13 which disallows founding corporation headquarters when using the mercantalism civic. Use the unofficial patch to fix this.
-You can't found two conflicting corporations in the same city. Some corporations need some of the same resources to function. Such corporations cannot exist in the same city.

There can be said a lot more about corporations than the way to found them. If you have questions about other aspects of their functionalities, then just ask.

There is a bug in BTS 3.13 where the AI is willing to trade for resources it already has. This is useful once the AI has a corporation that uses these resources, but it is already willing to trade for such resources even when there is no reasonable gain for the AI and corporations are not available yet. The iron + copper + 17 gold per turn deal is quite useless for them if they already have iron and copper themselves.

You should install Bhruic's unofficial patch for BTS 3.13. It fixes this strange behaviour for the AI.

By the way, I didn't actually check out your gamesave, so I could be mistaken.

and if I do make a trade then 10 turns later they always cancel.
I think your confused here. When you give something to someone for nothing (they ask for help, they demand tribute, you offer a token) you have a Peace Treaty for 10 turns. Neither of you can declare war on each other.

Also, Corporations act as WORLD Wonders, not National Wonders.

I just confused myself here.

What determines the cost of corporations in cities? I know it's related to the city's population, but is it also related to the number of resources you're consuming (thus increasing the benefit)?

Maybe its a dumb question but once you'e captured a city, can you change
its name to one appropriate to your civ or are you just stuck with it?

You can change it. One time I believe I changed it in the city screen by clicking on the name there. There may be other places to do it too. I have done it.

My Newbie Q:

How come I wasnt given a Cultural Victory when my 3 cities hit 50,000 culture? Was it because I had already triggered the UN?
I couldn't sway the UN to give me a Diplomatic win, which I understand.
Time Victories are not that fun and was hoping for the Cultural Win.

My three culture cities at the end of the time victory had these points:
92263
76249
73251
I attached a JPEG screen shot of the Victory Conditions screen at the end.

what speed are you playing on?

Im pretty sure I let everything load using the default or random choice settings. When I looked in the Victory History data at the very end, all my games say "Epic" and difficulty was probably "Chieftain".

So does the game speed explain why it takes WAY over 50,000 culture points per city to win. I mean it wasnt even close to 50K, how can you ever hope to win that way if you have no clue what you are shooting for?

And then after I won only a time victory the game told me I was a horrible leader even though I won. sheesh!
I had about a million stealth bombers too, didnt use any though, that might have something to do with it. The game just kept suggesting I might build them in all my cities. Had a ton of battleships too of which I never used in battle, I just posted them about. But the game advisor kept telling me to build them so I did...there were no more buildings to construct and I had all the culture sliders maxed for the last 100 turns. (it was 3AM and I was trying to end it fast non-violently but some of those AIs were asking for a spanking*wink*)
