Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

1. If I build the Pyramids, then choose a civic for which I do not have the technology for, then lose the Pyramids to conquest, do I still get to stay in that civic?

2. How come I can still build a coal plant in the city where I built the National Park even though it's suppose to remove the city's access to coal?

3. How does Ironworks function? Do you only get a bonus if the city has a coal or iron within it's radius? Do you get an extra bonus if the city has both in its radius?

4. What is the benefit of spreading a corporation to a foreign city? If the corporation gives culture, is it giving YOUR culture to that foreign city or just regular culture?

Thanks in advance!

Is there any way to order the operations during wartime? I would like to handle all of my air units first, then my land units. Avoids forgetting a bomber, then losing a tank because the enemy wasn't softened up enough ...

never happened to me but I don't think you can stick with a civic you don't have the tech for.
2. How come I can still build a coal plant in the city where I built the National Park even though it's suppose to remove the city's access to coal?
the fact that you can build it doesn't imply you should build it ;).
I guess it was allowed to let japan benefit from the shale plant in the national park city.
If you aren't japan, it's totally useless to build the coal plant in the national park city.
3. How does Ironworks function? Do you only get a bonus if the city has a coal or iron within it's radius? Do you get an extra bonus if the city has both in its radius?
You get a 50% bonus if your city has access to iron and another 50% if it has access to iron.
If you have iron and coal anywhere in your cultural boundaries (not necessarily in this city's cultural boundries), and have it connected to your trade network (your roads/railroads mostly), you're the proud owner of a +100% hammer city.
4. What is the benefit of spreading a corporation to a foreign city? If the corporation gives culture, is it giving YOUR culture to that foreign city or just regular culture?
the benefit of spreading your corps to them is :
- they pay the maintenance
- you get the HQ's money

do watermills destroy forests? That is if a watermill is built on a grasslands forest, will it remove the forest (and the +1 :hammers:)

There's no way of doing that that I know of, unfortunately.

Yes, I believe so - as far as I know the only improvements that can be built on forests are lumbermills and camps.

If you're really desperate (because it's not much fun), you can go into the military advisor, and look at your own troops.

They are sorted by type, and you can set it to show individual units.
This way you can check your planes all over the place before doing anything else.

the benefit of spreading your corps to them is :
- they pay the maintenance
- you get the HQ's money

But dependent on the corporation enabling resources they have, they will get some benefits from the corporation. So if a corporation gives 1 :hammers: per resource and they have 2 of these resources, then they'll get 2 :hammers: in each of the cities that you spread the corporation to. But they will pay money for the corporation and the owner of the Headquarters will get income in the city containing the Headquarters.

If you're the owner of the Headquarters, then it can be interesting to spread the corporation to foreign cities depending on how much it costs to spread the corporation, how much they will benefit from the corporation and how much your headquarters city is going to benefit from the corporation.
If you don't own the Headquarters, there is no reason to spread the corporation to a foreign nation.

Usually, your land based units are located in 1, 2 or 3 large groups and maybe some reinforcements that are on the way. You could temporarily fortify the large groups and move the reinforcements, your workers and use your fighters and bombers and only then defortify/unfortify (is there a word for that?) your large groups of land units and use them. But don't forget to defortify and use them!

happens to me all the time!
If I was able to remove those stupid errors, I would be a most honorable player .

What techs mark the transitions from one era to another?

What techs mark the transitions from one era to another?

Each technology belongs to a certain era. If you discover a technology from a later era than the one you're presently in, then you'll move to that era. In BTS, when a technology advances you to the next era, this is mentioned in the tech tree. You can find the era of all the technologies in the file CIV4TechInfos.xml.

The era of the game has very little influence on various game elements.

Thanks a lot for the info, I'm digging through that file now. :)

And yeah, I know it has little influence. The reason I ask is because of a certain quest that had to be completed before the renaissance. I didn't have the game running, otherwise I guess by your answer that I could have just checked the tech tree...

Yes, I believe so - as far as I know the only improvements that can be built on forests are lumbermills and camps.
And forts.

Thanks for the help, I think Im experiencing the bug that was described.

I cant make my cities produce corporate executives to spread my 2 corporations. I have founded Sushi and Mining Inc but they do not spread on their own, nor do I have the option of training a corporate executive in any of my cities, including the 2 cities that are the place of incorporation.

Which economic civic are you using?

Are you using Bhruics unofficial patch for BTS 3.13 ?

Ahhh I fixed it. thanks. I was using a civic that disallowed corporate growth. Now if I could get the last 15 turns back.

Just wanted to remark that in BTS 3.13 without Bhruics unofficial patch, you are not allowed to use corporations in Mercantalism. This is likely an error introduced in then BTS patch 3.13 and it was fixed in the unofficial patch.
You're not supposed to have corporations when using the State Property civic.

By the way, corporations do not spread naturally. You do need to use corporate executives.

I'm playing a vanilla game as Rosevelt.I just passed into the Musketmen area and have built a "few" of them. The map is a bit strange in that we have one rather large continent that all of us are on & a few small, far away islands.

I have circumnavigated the globe.
I am in the middle of the pack on score.
My part of the continent is rather arid, so
My cities are not so good for production.

I was wiping out Monty and had the unsolicited help of one of the AIs, so when he asked for peace, I gave it to him, figuring that the other AI would wipe him out. He still has a city or two somewhere, but I am not sure where. (I suppose I could build a scout & find him, if I really cared. Which leads to a side question - is there any value to building a scout and setting him to auto explore? I don't lack for any resources at this time. I have copper, iron, horses, cow, wheat, gems and a couple of other things.)

Nearest neighbors:
Qin - has one lousy city near mine, but inhibits my cultural boundry on two or three cities.
Hatty - below my score - weaker.
Cyrus - #1 on score - fairly strong, I'm not sure where he's at on tech tree.

To get to anyone else, I'd have to go through them.

My question: given that info, what should I do next?? I'm inclined to buiild a few more muskets, take my war elephants, muskets, cats and attack Hatty.
