Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

Culture has nothing to do with religion spreading.

However, a thing to know: a religion can spread automatically only to a city without any religion.

Why the hell can't i continue my saved tutorial in original Civ 4, and why is it made in such a ******** way that i have to restart the game every time i want to go tutorial? Is there any way i can load the tutorial so that the tutorial actually continues and not just a normal game. I played up until the spot where it tells me to go look for other civs, so i'm not starting it over.

Seems like sound advice. I think its worth mentioning that some entry level cavalry units, and any unit with two flanking promotions is immune to first strikes, making even Drill IV potentially useless.

Very true, except Drill IV gives the extra bonus of +10% vs. mounted. :)

How does inter-player diplomacy/trading work in PBEM?
If you're referring to the game mechanics: Firstly, one player clicks on the name of the other person that they want to trade with, and proposes the deal that they want. The diplomacy window is then closed. When the next player takes their turn, the diplomacy window will open with the proposed trade. They can then choose to accept (in which case the deal takes place immediately), cancel (in which case nothing happens), or renegotiate (in which case they select their counter-offer, close diplomacy, then wait for the other person to accept, cancel or renegotiate on their next turn).

If you're referring to out-of-game mechanics: It varies between people as to how they'll arrange deals. Generally most veteran players that I know will first discuss trades via a chat program or email, since the in-game diplomacy system is rather clunky (and a bit bugged) for sending messages. Or of course, if you know the other player in real life, you can talk to them in person. ;)

No need for the angry exclamations. ;)

The answer is that the tutorial is just bugged. I've noticed this before, and it seems there's no way to continue the tutorial from a savegame - you just have to keep it running and play it through in one session (or else leave your computer on and in Civ4 between sessions). It's a pain, I know, but there's nothing much that can be done as far as I know. :)

I suffered the same problems with the tutorial when the game first arrived. But I do remember reading in the patch notes (version 1.61) that many tutorial issues were fixed, maybe also the saving and loading issues. So if you're playing without the latest patches, then the first thing to do is patch your game (patch 1.74 for vanilla civ4, available through ingame patching system or here on civfanatics). I doubt however that an incorrectly saved tutorial under civ4 1.00 will load correctly in civ4 1.74.

I'm new to this so bear with me. I'm not even sure this is the right place to post this, if not sorry. I have civ iv gold edition ( includes warlords ). I have downloaded some mods to use and some of them work but others I keep getting xml errors. I have ffh 1.og that works just fine. also dark ages vanilla and lost wonders that work fine. My problem is I can't get lost units mod or the ancient Mediterranean mods to work. I get these errors;
buildingclass_forbidden_palace info class was incorrect current xml file is buildings/civbuildinginfos.xml (this happens twice in lost units and once in ancient med)
i get the same errrors for,
tag:tech_communism (three times in lost units)
tag: buildingclass_threegorgesdam (twice in lost units once in ancient med)
tag:building_great_palace
tag:great_dam
leader_mao_zedong

also I have lost units and lost wonders combined but only get two errors
leader_mao_zedong
tech communism (three times)

I would really appreciate any help you can give. Thanks in advance.

How does the game calculate normalized score? Is it a comparison to the other player's scores? I just finished a game (domination victory) and saw that my Normalized Score was 18000 points higher than my actual score.

Normalized score is some combination of how fast you win, your total land area, your total population, wonders you control and techs you have. This is in rough order of importance when getting factored into the final score. It also gets modified based on game speed (I think) and difficulty level.

CCRunner correct me if I'm wrong but I think pretty much all those things except difficulty go into the normal score, and then there is a multiplier applied to that score to give the normalized score.

So the only ting that affects the difference between normal and normalized score is the difficulty.

About a year ago a friend introduced me to ffh I believe it was sub titled age of rebirth. It was for the van version. The version 1.og that I have now is a lot different. The one I had (my comp crashed hard and had to b replaced), had the calabim and other civs that I don't remember off the top of my head. It also had the dragon you had to defeat in order to get his horde. It also had mana nodes. I believe it was version 1.61. Is there still an active link anywhere to this version? And if so could someone point me in the right direction. I can't use ffh2 because I don't have bts yet. Thanx

I started a PBEM game with some people on another forum, but we get this error:

So, uh. I can't open the game. Ideas?

I'm at version 1.74. When I try to open the game, it says something to the effect of "This game has been protected to ensure that the assets in your mod folder are unchanged", and then quits.

I am the game host and I'm not running any mods. We're all running vanilla Civ 1.74. The only "custom asset" I have is Tectonics, which I downloaded, but we're not using that map script for this game (using Continents). Any thoughts?

Difficulty and the year you finish the game in are the two factors that contribute to the normalized score, I believe.

You're better off asking in the Fall From Heaven mod forum. :)

That's weird. Did anyone play any turns, or did the first person that you sent the save to experience this problem?

It could be that some people have downloaded the 1.74 patch and applied it to their game when they shouldn't have. Beyond The Sword includes the 1.74 patch for vanilla Civ4, so you don't need to apply the patch again if you've installed BTS already. Also, I remember hearing that the standalone 1.74 patch that you can download has some issues - so the best thing might be for you all to have Beyond the Sword installed (which definitely has a working version of 1.74).

Assuming that you're absolutely sure that there are no differences in your game versions (everybody is running the same unmodded patch 1.74), the issue could just be a bad save file. I've had this happen to me very occasionally - someone will play their turn and save, but the save will be corrupted and the "asset error" will pop up when the next person tries to load the game. Try having the last person to play reload the save file that was passed to them, play and save the game again, then send the new save file. That will fix the problem (if it is indeed a corrupted savegame issue).

Also, something to note is that savegame corruption tends to happen more often if you have the "auto-email" thing set up inside Civ4. If this is the case in your game, try disabling the automatic emails, and just send the savegames manually to the next person to play.

Hope that helps. Feel free to ask any further questions, I'll be happy to do my best to answer. :)

Player 1 (me) played, then player 2 played. Player 3 is the one having trouble.

Some of us (including me) don't own the expansions, so installing BtS for everyone isn't practical.

I'll ask player 2 to re-save and send and see if it works.
