Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

Player 1 (me) played, then player 2 played. Player 3 is the one having trouble.

Some of us (including me) don't own the expansions, so installing BtS for everyone isn't practical.

I'll ask player 2 to re-save and send and see if it works.
Lord Parkin? Any further advice?

Well, did player 2 replaying and resending the save work? I was waiting for you to find that out before going any further. :)

Fair enough. He's probably only going to wake up in the next hour or so (our game has people from 7 different time zones, ranging from GMT +12 to GMT -8 :P), so we'll see then, I guess. I just asked because I thought maybe the fact that some players have BtS installed could cause this error. In fact... I think player 2 does not have BtS, but I think player 3 does.

I think it has something to do with updating DirectX. You need to update your DirectX before installing the 1.74 patch, if you haven't installed BTS. Can't remember exactly, I can look into the specifics more if you're still having problems later. :)

I don't know, it could... When I installed 1.74 I got the shader error thing, the solution to which was to put d3dx9_31.dll and d3dx9_32.dll in my Civ4 folder. Maybe that has something to do with it... I'll let you know when Kizyr has replayed his turn.

how do I take a screen shot?

Press the PrintScreen PrtSc button on your keyboard. Pressing Shift+PrtSc lets you name the screenshot, but the silly text box that comes up stays in the screenshot.

I think normally the screenshots are saved to ...My Documents\My Games\Beyond the Sword\ScreenShots unless you're not using BtS.

hello,
I would want to ask, how long does unhappiness from "The world considers you a villain" when I defy UN resolution last?

Hmm, I thought it lasted until you voted "Yes" for a resolution that passed...

This is what I believe is the case, yes. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I also think that this unhappiness can "stack", meaning you can have +10 or +15 unhappiness modifiers as a result of multiple vetoes.

Yes, it can stack. I've had +10:mad: near the end of a culture game once. Culture slider gobbled it all up though! :)

Lord Parkin,

Player 2 downloaded his own save and tried to open it; it worked. So we are pretty sure save corruption was not the problem. Player 3 (who did indeed have BtS) uninstalled his entire game, then only installed Vanilla. This worked! I think the rest of us only have Vanilla installed, so this problem shouldn't pop up again.

Good to hear. I suspected it might have been a compatibility issue between the vanilla and BTS patches. :)

First of all thanks to all of you for your help! I finally started to use Slavery,Beuracasy(spelling) and all the options to manage my empire!! I'm feeling pretty good killing off those unhappy citizens and taking control of my game!! (I'm not proficient yet, but it feels good to strategize a little)Here is my question...I launched my ICBM'S and low and behold they were destroyed before reaching the city! Is it possible for Jets to destroy icbm's ?? I think more likely they have some sort of strategic defense space thingy set up. So what could it be?

Lord Parkin, again I summon thy services... :D

All but the last player (player 7) can now play the game, but unlucky number 7 has the Complete Civ IV package installed or something. ie Both expansions, and he can't reinstall just Vanilla. So is there any way to make this work?

Your opponent must have SDI built. This project, once built, shoots down 75% of all incoming ICBMs if I recall correctly.

If you build tactical nukes instead, they have a greater chance of evading interception. Only about 37.5% of them get shot down, and they're also cheaper!:king::nuke::goodjob:

I think it's 20 turns on normal

And I again think that Gwynnja is right. :D

Ok, I know that it has been speculated in some threads that it is related to a new resolution passing through a 'yes' vote, but no evidence was posted in such threads and the posters posting this information were not those who look into the code. It was just based on ingame experience. In other threads another theory was suggested:

You get 20 turns of 5 unhappiness for each resolution that you defy (and would have passed with a no-vote). Votes occur each 7 turns (both values at normal game speed).

Note that 20 turns of unhappiness is very similar to voting yes after 3 voting periods (21 turns). This would explain the rise of the 'vote yes theory' while it actually is related to a 20 turn period.

This '20 turn period' theory is supported by the following values from the GlobalDefines.xml file:

<Define>
<DefineName>DEFY_RESOLUTION_POP_ANGER</DefineName>
<iDefineIntVal>5</iDefineIntVal>
</Define>
<Define>
<DefineName>DEFY_RESOLUTION_ANGER_DIVISOR</DefineName>
<iDefineIntVal>20</iDefineIntVal>
</Define>

I have no supporting information from python or the CvGameCoreDLL.dll file.

But note the similarity to these values also from the GlobalDefines.xml file which define game mechanics that we already know:

<Define>
<DefineName>HURRY_POP_ANGER</DefineName>
<iDefineIntVal>1</iDefineIntVal>
</Define>
<Define>
<DefineName>HURRY_ANGER_DIVISOR</DefineName>
<iDefineIntVal>10</iDefineIntVal>
</Define>
<Define>
<DefineName>CONSCRIPT_POP_ANGER</DefineName>
<iDefineIntVal>3</iDefineIntVal>
</Define>
<Define>
<DefineName>CONSCRIPT_ANGER_DIVISOR</DefineName>
<iDefineIntVal>10</iDefineIntVal>
</Define>

Was that convincing? ;)

Hmm... what patch and game version does Player 7 have? (He'll see this if he goes into the main menu and clicks "Advanced" then "About This Build".)

Spoiler :

Thanks Roland - thorough and detailed research as usual. :) The only thing remaining to verify this is to actually test it in the game to check that the happiness does indeed wear off this way (though I'm sure that it does).

Strangely enough, I've never really encountered the "voting Never unhappiness" myself, since I'm frequently the Leader of the AP/UN myself, and (in the case of the AP) when I'm not it's usually because it's on another continent and thus is irrelevant. Moreover, even when I'm not the Leader of the AP/UN, I rarely find the need to vote "Never", and on the occasions that I do the resolution usually doesn't recieve enough votes to pass anyway. So hence why I haven't had much experience with this kind of unhappiness myself before. ;)
