Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

Hello All,
first post here and Civ IV newbie.

I am trying to finalize my first Civ IV game and have a couple questions. I used to play CIV DOS several years back and decided to jump in this nice game once more. Very pleased by the improvements. :)

So, I followed the initial game's tutorial where it puts me against the PC. The game's AI put me against Ghandi.

I dominated his civilization and by experimenting several new game features while playing, got the Time Victory (which appears to be the easiest).

Decided to go beyond and play with a war scenario and also easily eliminated him. After that decided to build the spaceship to see where it would lead me.

I built the SS around 2150, after providing virtually all cities' features from lighthouse up to nuclear plants and distributing them to generate culture, research and wealth.

My questions are:
1) how do I launch the SS? I already have all the components, built in separate cities. Do I have to somehow bring them together? The info windows confirm I have everything but I do not see anything like the movies when we complete a wonder, etc.

2) I started the Future Tech research and am already around 2600 and it keeps developing "something" but I do nto see any new technology or stuff to build in the cities. Where is that research going? My "gold" generation is starting to decay and will get negative is nothing is done.

3) that brings to my last question. Almost all cities are in stagnant mode now and I am facing "global warming" with the green areas vanishing deserts spreading. Could nto find anything that would reverse it so the planet will get in a self destruction mode soon if nothing is done. Did not find any settings in the cities or anywhere else to add new technologies to reverse or mitigate this issue. Most cities still appear to be happy, since I keep getting those cheers celebrating the monarch day.

Ideas and guidance welcome.

Thanks!

There is no way to reverse global warming. There are some excellent mods out there that fix GW, though.

ive a question about mods when you download them, in which folder do you put it to be able to load it??? ive tried several and put them in the mods folder but i cannot go to load mods and manually load it

I put my mods in the following directory:
C:\games\Civilization 4 Complete\Beyond the Sword\Mods
(I suppose typically it would be \Program Files\ rather than \games\)
So for example, I have this:
C:\games\Civilization 4 Complete\Beyond the Sword\Mods\BUG Mod 4.1\
That makes "BUG Mod 4.1" appear in the mods menu; but I have set it up to load automatically by having "Mod = Mods\BUG Mod 4.1" in the config file.

hey there

is there any visual indication in the city screen that shows the revolt risk in border cities? if so, where do i find it?

GPP start at 100 then go up by 100 each time (200 for the 2nd, 300 for the 3rd...) up to 1000, then up by 200 each turn. The linked article has lots more explanation.

Since "level 4 experience" for unlocking the Heroic Epic means a 10 xp unit (for a non-CHA leader) I'm pretty sure "level 1" is 0 XP. So the numbers are
1: 0
2: 2 (+2)
3: 5 (+3)
4: 10 (+5) -- unlocks Heroic Epic
5: 17 (+7)
6: 26 (+9) -- unlocks West Point

The formula for levels 2 and up is n(n-2)+2.

Thanks! I'll look for them (curious too see how to reverse it). Right now I am considering either playing a scenario of going to war (I saved the game before doing so) and not using nukes, or moving one step up and starting all over at an upper difficulty level against more civilizations. Leaning towards the second, but have to wait for weekend because already know this will go overnight again.

Does irrigation spread through a city on a desert? BtS.

Yes.

lil question, how do I add archery for AI on a scenario mainly for the higher level purpose?

If you explore a hill tile before you have Bronze Working and then move out of the area, putting the hill tile into the fog, will it show a copper node (if there is one) after you research BW through the fog, or do you have to reveal it again after you have BW to see the copper?

*EDIT* Thank you kindly.

It will show the copper. When new resources become available, they will always show up if you have already explored the tile, fog or no fog. However, it won't show whether some other civ has taken that tile in the meantime. You have to go look for that. Also, copper can show up on any kind of land tile (except mountains), not just hills.

Any good hints or articles on occupation? How many units to leave in a captured city and for how long (Size and culture play a part I'm sure).

I'm looking to speed up my mobile warfare stacks. Even with garison troops coming up behind them, they still have a bad habbit of getting bogged down.
Thanks.

I cannot believe that I don't find what I am looking for: How long does the Spaceship need to travel before reaching Alpha Centauri with 1 or 2 engines and with 1-5 thrusters?

I used the forum-search and I checked the War Academy, but the only thing I found was this article about travel-times with 1 or 2 engines and full thrusters.

Nothing about the effects of less thrusters though, and I wouldn't mind a confirmation for quick speed :(

Depends on alot of factors; closeness to the front, era, tech of opponent, coastal/inland, etc.

My VERY GENERAL rule of thumb is 2xGarrison type units (longbows/MGs, whatever) + 2xMounted units if the city is near the front, and/or coastal and exposed to attack. Add in AA units, Fighter Interceptors, and patrolling naval units as required. If it's buried deep inland in the empire, heck I'll just stick an ancient un-upgraded unit in there for the heck of it. Nothing like an Arcology being policed by an old guy with a club.

Love the screen name, btw. :goodjob:

Early in the war, about 4-10. When the AI passes the threshold of not sending counterattack stacks and instead defending with all their units, 1. I don't see size and culture of the particular city having an effect. Having sufficient numbers for a speedy advance is imperative in reaching that threshold faster (usually after ~3-5 cities have been taken, depending on the size of their empire).

super dooper small poopy scooper question... so small even a cave man could answer it!!

--------------------

Ok my question is for Civ4 Beyond the Snow Board err I mean Beyond the Sword... for a reward of 2 billion dollars in cash prizes if answered correctly...

A: How do I watch a replay from a single player game or how do I save a re-play in any game or is it only allowed in multiplayer?

B: Is there a good website that lets others download replays?

C: If this was asked already in a previous thread, what is best for my death? A shootout, a hanging, or a drowning..

Silu and besbrian:

Thank you both for your responses. Information is always handy. :D

However, I think I phrased the question wrong. I wasn't refering so much to enemy counter attack as I was to the citizens of a given city propper. I was looking towards trying to get them "settled down" quicker after an occupation and to keep them from revolting after that (Which is why I mentioned size and culture).

I find myself leaving those fast mobil units I mentioned guarding a city while the infantry (Archers, MGs... whoever) come slogging up behind. Maybe a better question then would be, can you leave a recently occupied city empty of troops for a few turns until the garison gets there? Again, citizens as opposed to counter attack.
