Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

However... Jaoa launched without some of the very heavy casings, making his spaceship FASTER. He must have gotten there the turn BEFORE yours got there. Does this make sense? Why build the casings if they just slow you down? Well... the Casings determine the success probability. All 5=100%. Joao went with fewer, taking a chance that his SS might burn up in the atmosphere, in exchange for a faster SS that had at least a chance of winning.

Thank you!

I knew that all the casings = increased chance of successful flight (which why i always build all 5), but never knew that less casings = faster spaceship!

Its defintely something for me to bear in mind for future close games (caesar and charlemagne also had 3/4 built spaceships - just never got round to launching them).

Thanks again! :goodjob:

Can anyone tell me why I am unable to build horse units even though I have control of (and roads to) several horse resources? Yes, there are pastures built as well.

I'm assuming you have already tech'ed horseback riding, but if you are trying to build horse archers.. make sure you have archery as well.

it's made me go WTH a few times as well, when i forgot to tech archery.

Gorey mentioned tech which is the only thing I can think of too. Past that, try pointing your cursor at one of the units you're trying to build on the city screen. There SHOULD be a line in red that tells you what you're missing.

There are several possible reasons:

- You have traded away the resources
- You haven't researched the right technologies
- You conquered the pastures, but haven't got the technology to use them
- The roads don't connect the resource to your cities

Or some other weird circumstance that I'm not thinking about. If none of the above explaines your situation, then upload a savegame and we'll check it out. When you can actually use a resource, then it will be shown in the upper right corner of the city screen along with all the other resources that you own.

Has anyone else noticed how pathetic medieval war can become?

Not really. I like it as there are lots of different units that you can use during this era. You do tend to need lots of siege units or espionage points to get rid of city defence bonuses.

I seem to have trouble with it... For some reason. Why could this be?

There could be many reasons

-You need more siege units to tackle the defence bonus of cities but you don't get anything extra for that large investment in siege units. This makes things easier when defending but harder when attacking.

-Siege units in this era are relatively weak in battles against units (they are low strength). Since human players are often better at using the collateral damage from siege units, the fact that these units are weak in this era gives the human player less of an advantage against the dumb AI.

-It's hard to get a technological edge in this era of the game. Riflemen and cannons are far away when you're fighting with longbowmen and macemen.

-The broad selection of units might not make it clear which unit is best for which situation.

But of course, I can't guess what you're struggling with.

I personally like it that not each era is the same with different values for similar unit matchups. There's actually a difference in the way battles are fought in ancient/classical times, in medieval times, in the renaissance and in modern times. It keeps the game lively.

Are any of the Improvements stackable? I know that the first round of improvements (cottage, camp, farm, pasture) are not, but now I'm getting to watermill and windmill.. can these stack on any of my farms or towns?

I'm guessing NOT ... it's just kinda annoying, I didn't plan ahead for this.. but at the same time, I know that even more improvements are coming down the road.. so, some of them HAVE to be stackable, right?

but I couldn't find this in the CPedia

No they are not but that would be kind of cool.

hrm... lol.. makes it kinda hard to plan ahead your first time playing! guess I just gotta wing it, and might have to destroy something down the road.

another question: Is there something I can press to see the Game Log. I guess that's what you could call it.. The messages that pop up during a turn telling you about important events.. Is there some way I can pull up a log of those messages???

I was turning my head and saw something about a spy near one of my cities... Also, if you leave the computer for a few minutes, be nice to be able to check if you missed any messages.

I checked in the 'Hints' page of the CPedia but didn't find it.

Can you play Fall From Heaven online if everyone has it installed? Civ 4 singleplayer is so dreadfully boring.

Edit: Why the hell does the game suggest I build cities in an area that'd cannibalize the workable tiles of my other cities?

Also, why don't the older cities get prioritization on tiles? Why do new ones just steal them?! Ugh!

The game does have a steep learning curve.

There's a button in the upper left corner of the main screen, below the science and gold settings. You can also access it by pressing CTRL TAB. The log has several tabs with different listings. In BTS a quest log was added to store the quests.

If you like logs and all kinds of handy information during the game, then you should try the BUG Mod some time. It has radically improved the interface and accessibility of information sources in the game. This mod has been merged into many other larger mods which also change gameplay rules.

When you have an area of 30 tiles, then you can't use them all with a single city. But if you place 2 cities in that area, then they'll typically overlap. Since each tile adds to the production, commerce and food of your empire as a whole, it's usually better to use (almost) every tile within the area of the world that you control. That means that some cities will have overlap. It is also best to use all of those tiles with a minimum number of cities as each city has an upkeep cost. So if the area of 30 tiles can be used with 2 cities, then it's usually not wise to place 3 in that area.

When you first place your cities, then the tiles are assigned to cities based on proximity. You can adjust which city controls which tile by just clicking on the tile when you're in the city view of the city that you'd wish to control the tile.

Could you please cut back on the swearing a little. :)

I've just bought civ4 + the 2 expansion packs through steam, but I'm a bit puzzled as to how the expansions actually work. Are they run as separate games? Do they 'override' the original civ4? Does beyond the sword include all the additions from warlords as well? Do you use the same savegames between the three versions? If I'm starting off, should I play the original, warlords, then BtS, or just start with BtS?

I'm sure you can get the gist of what I'm asking :)

They're run as separate games, launched by separate executables etc all of which you can play with any installation setup (no overriding). Just play BtS, it has all the content of Warlords except some scenarios while being vastly superior in many ways.

Vanilla, Warlords and BtS each use a different savegame extension so they're not compatible out of the box.
