Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

Ok, some stuff with Fortify. In Civ 4 you slowly get 5% Fortify per turn right (max 25%)? If you Fortify this turn and then hit End Turn and the enemy attacks you next turn does your unit get 5% defense?

If you moved your unit last turn but didn't move your unit at all this turn, when you hit end turn and your enemy has his turn, your unit will have 5% fortify bonus.

What is the general consensus on how to handle sheep/pigs on a grassland hill? Should you mine or pasture it? Also would it change your answer if you had two in your BFC of the same resource?

I've always pastured them. (1) Food is king--use it for whipping, growth, and/or specialists; (2) you can always trade an extra resource, but you can't trade a mine; (3) livestock are among the best resources to trade as they offer a benefit to the AI of low value and their multiplier (supermarket) doesn't appear until late; (4) by mid-game, workshops are decent enough to provide hammers if the city is short; and (5) I'm pretty sure there's 0 chance of striking a resource like gold, copper, etc. if there's another resource already there.

Pasturing it allows you to trade the extra for other resources or gold. Except for some unusual circumstances I would pasture it. Plus the additional food for growth. I only consider other options for resources when there is a unique situation like having 10 sugar resources when there'e only 6 civs in the world. Whether there are two on any given resource in the BFC isn't as important as the big picute of your empire. An additional food resource is usually welcomed by most.

With sheep or pigs on hills, it can be worth mining them if your starting tech path requires you won't be getting animal husbandry very quickly. You might think it's wasteful to build a mine when you're going to later build a pasture over it but pigs on hills are a very strong tile when they are mined, especially if riverside, and waiting til AH just to work them could be wasteful.

Hi all. Quick question about submitting a GOTM save file. (Vanilla, GOTM51)

The GOTM pages say to submit your last save file. Does this mean that once you've watched the replay and you get the prompt asking if you want to play "just one more turn" you say yes and then immediately save the game and submit that file? Or does the HOF mod automatically save your game when you've won (and if so to which directory)?

PS GOTM51 was very fun and educational for me. I've had some cultural and diplo wins on Emperor, but I should probably play a few more games at lower levels, because I learned a lot about Domination wins by playing this GOTM (would say exactly what I mean but I don't want to put in any spoilers for others still playing).

Yes, click on the "Just... One... More... Turn" button, and then manually save your game before making any moves. THAT is the save you need to submit for GOTM.

The only exception to that is if you lose by conquest defeat, where there is no option for one more turn. In that case, you submit the last autosave file. You did adjust your ini file to make an autosave every turn, right? :mischief:

Thanks for the prompt response, kcd.

And, erm, well... no. But I'll get onto that right away. Honest.

When I try but fail to build a wonder (because someone else gets it first,) is the amount of gold I get less than the amount I would have got if I'd just put the same amount of hammers into building wealth?

It is generally more, since bonuses apply I believe.

Question :

How do you use the March promotion (can heal while moving)?

I had the impression the unit would... well "heal while moving" (thus no need for the heal command), but testing this ingame I see that if I simply move the unit it won't heal. Do I have to always leave the last move for healing, or is there a mechanic I am missing here?

Here's a newb question. Civ4 used to show me a popup window with my options for research. now it only shows me the little icons at the top of the screen. how can i recover the popup, i prefer that.

The following turn if you have not selected a tech to research the pop-up will appear. Or you can click on the beaker (flask) in the upper right hand corner to see the tech tree.

Did you change the in-game options? If you did, just open up the options page and click on "reset" or "default" or whatever and you get all the original settings back.

The "Minimize pop-ups" options is actually one of my favorite features in CivIV! :D

Just like with fortifying, that was mentioned recently, a unit automatically heals every turn it doens't move. (No need to give it the "Heal" order.) So, I would assume that the March promotion achieves this even if the unit moves.

Ok here is my situation. A kashik attacks a city, kills a unit, and is hurt at 5.2 health.

I attack with other units until I take the city, then I move that kashik inside on the same turn. Now, since this unit ends the turn inside my city, it should heal at least 10% up to 5.7... but ending turn and checking his health, he is still at 5.2.

The March promotion did not work, so what am I doing wrong?

It should have worked and healed to full from 5.2 inside a city (+20% = +1.2). I have no ideas except ones involving questioning your observations :) Provided you're not playing a mod of some sort.

Maybe a unit can't heal the turn it attacks then?
This might be it.

I have no mod other than BUG, and I can see that if I simply move him he heals. I wish I had a save from before so I can test... but I'll keep an eye on future attacks for confirmation on whether attacking stops it from healing on the same turn.

According to the War Academy article about the march promotion, the unit should heal after attacking.
