It is me again. What is the most recommended version of Civ IV?
Basic, BTS, or Warlords? I have Civ IV complete. Thanks!

I play BTS. There are parts I don't care for but it just has so much more than the older versions. Like more civs to choose from. :)

So BTS has more civs to choose from, as does Warlords, and Warlords also has Great Generals right? So there isn't a huge difference? BTS and Warlords also have other scenarios to play.

BtS has everything that was in Warlords. Except for Warlords scenarios. All the standard Warlords game elements are in BtS

DrumStudent, this is actually a very common question, so if you need more elaborate info you could just browse through this forum or even this thread. Or use the search function.

But the answer is always the same: Once you feel comfortable with Vanilla (the original version) you should probably move up to BTS. Thats the version everyone is playing and you won't be missing out on any additions to the core game by doing so also.

So stop worrying and play with BTS with us. :king:

If I have Open Borders with someone and they are moving a stack of troops across my territory and then I declare war on them, what exactly happens to those troops? I assume they will be moved somewhere outside my borders, but is there any way to tell where? Hopefully not to the city I want to attack, or somewhere they can easily attack one of my weak cities...

It's difficult to predict; usually they are moved to the nearest neutral or friendly tile, but often several of them are equidistant, so it's hard to say exactly where they'll go.

What I usually do is end the OB first, see where the soon-to-be-enemy-units within my territory went, move troops around as required to defend from them, then declare war--which may turn out to be a few turns later.

Is there a way to get an earth map into "Custom Game"? I saw a lot of stuff about swapping out the Civs for the scenario but that's not what I'd like.

EDIT: Also, am I the only one who puts the workers into groups to make the work more efficient?

In Custom Game you can choose the Terra map or Earth2, not sure if that's what you mean.

Grouping up workers is a good tip once you have enough workers.

I used to do this until someone pointed out that you lose many worker turns that way. Inevitably, one or more workers in the group finishes the task and is/are ready for reassignment, but if they're in a group, the "free" workers have to wait until the next turn, when all workers in the group are available, to move on to their next task.

It makes sense, once you have enough workers, to assign more than one to complete a task so they finish faster; but leave them separate so you can reassign each worker as he becomes free.

Something I've noticed though is that if you have more workers than you need in a group, you can just split up the group into smaller groups.

I managed to remove all the Civs from the scenario so I could use my own every time. Woohoo! (It's a pain to try and swap every time because the file's so big that editing takes ages in a text editor.)

It's worth noting that on Marathon speed ~every worker task turn count is a multiple of 3 (Serfdom, Hagia Sophia and Steam Power muck with this a bit, but not very much), so then making worker groups of 3 makes sense. I always group workers on Marathon since everything takes ages to improve and movement is "cheaper" so frex chopping the same forest with many workers is less inefficient.

Great! BtS for the rest of my civving life I guess, with some others things thrown in maybe, Colonization (haven't tried yet), Warlords. Who knows?

I'd hold off on too many Civ IV investments... Civ V is due out later this year. BtS should tide you over until then.

Well, I got Complete for Christmas. And I think I will hold off on V until there are a bunch of new patches and some expansions.
