Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

What triggers "We love the King (or whatever) day?" I can't find it in Civipedia.

I think it is available to occur when you have
"
Cities of size 8 and higher which have no unhappy citizens and no food loss to health can enter "We Love the King Day!" from time to time. The effect is that the city pays no maintenance for one turn.

Each city that is eligible has a random chance to celebrate on any given turn that it remains eligible.

So if you have size 8 city (or greater) and there is no sickly green face icon nor a red angry face icon next to the city on the map screen, it is eligible.

Why does the defence symbol on the city say 100% but in the F1 city list the highest is 33. Some of the other cities have less than 100% but higher numbers on the city list.

What is the difference between the various speed levels?
So far I have only played Standard and I've one pretty well at that. Are the other speed setting very different or would I be able to play them too?

The game is designed for normal speed. Anything else alters the game a little bit. Marathon has the biggest change. YOu can play all of them if you can play one. Marathon, in my opinion, is better on huge maps so an invasion fleet isn't outdated before it arrives.

If you can win on standard, you can win on the other speed too.

A couple of thoughts. Slower speeds are better for warring for a variety of reasons. I personally don't play marathon because the name says it all - it's a marathon. I like Epic. The game balances pretty well at Epic and Quick, but marathon is unbalanced in favor of war.

Speed of your UU's. The faster the speed, the more the fast UU's are worth.

On slower speeds, be sure your military is ready. It's harder to build defenders quickly on slower speeds.

is it possible to play civ IV on a mac computer?
and if so can I play it with the windows disc, or do I need to buy a specialized one?

the reason I´m asking this is that my computer (acer with windows vista) for some reason just shuts down after about 1h of playing civ, I have no clue why, it never used to do this, it can be be because its overheated, but really I have no clue?
I would be much thankfull if enyone could answer this for me as well.

Does anyone know if unit promotions are factored into your civs power score? (i.e having more or higher upgraded units may dissuade an AI DoW, but what about better promoted units?)

I don't believe they are. The main determinant is the number of hit points of each unit at full strength. You get additional bonuses for certain buildings, wonders, and technologies.

I'm in the middle of a game with both Sid's Sushi and Mining Inc as my two corporations founded in my capital with the wall street.

However, trying to expand Mining Inc to a new city, my executive "failed to expand"?

There's a chance of failure when expanding corps.

Yes. You can play on a Mac. If you play under Mac OSX, you need a Mac CIV disk, which BTW is required to be in the drive to play unlike the latest Windows version. If you are running Leopard or Snow Leopard as your OS, you can play with the Windows CIV disk but you'll need to have the Windows OS installed to use under Boot Camp or use a Windows emulator. You can also use the Steam version to play under Mac OSX. See the Mac CIV forum for more info.

What is the point to be founder of religion?
The religion's holy city will be one of your civilization's cities. That means you can use a Great Prophet to create the holy site in your civ, which generates money for each city that has the religion. It's still generally not worth bothering with founding religions, though; better to take the holy cities from other civs after they've gone to the effort to make them valuable. :)

Unless! You do the religion hogging start. Instead of settling new cities, try to get at least 2 religions in your first city. It helps your economy a lot, with Wall Street and all. Just make sure to REX like crazy afterwards.

The real problem is that you're neglecting worker techs. Without the techs to improve your area, you may find yourself behind in the race for new cities. I find it more helpful if I work on getting my land set up for the REX (or rush). Finally, at moderate levels, if you're the first to Alphabet, that can really give you an edge.

Also, if you religion hog, you may find yourself facing a coalition of the Civs of a different religion and diplomatically isolated. Unless you use a lot of hammers spreading your religion.

I know, the lure of the shrines is great. Most players do this when they start playing. I did it for a long time. Also, as you move up in levels, being the first to found an early religion gets harder and harder.

I don't care for the way Windows operates, so I have never used a Windows machine to play any games. I'm afraid I can't help you there. You might try asking in the CIV tech forum, if no one answers here.
