Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

what do you do when one civ absolutely has it in for you? Justinian is waaaaaay behind in the tech race, but he just keeps pumping out inferior units so he can go to war with me. I am also behind in the tech race, although not as bad as he is because he runs the AP and every time I get the upper hand, he calls for a vote to end the war, then I am pretty much forced to defy it because he only calls for the resolution when I have spent 3-5 turns wearing down the defenses of one of his cities and I only need one more turn to finish the job. It would be too many wasted resources to not defy at that point.
I only get ten turns of breathing time before he declares again.

Are you both in the AP religion. Justinian is a moderate Zealot, so if you're in his religion, you should be able to get along with him. I usually run the AP religion as my state religion so I get more votes in the AP elections.

3-5 turns wearing down the defenses of one of his cities?!? You need more siege, a lot more. I usually have about 5 with accuracy to get his defenses to zero and a few suicide siege for collateral. If it's taking you 5 turns to take one city, that's too long. You want to be ready with your siege when the war starts. In a way, you're lucky. He might have been able to bring in allies against you. That's when it hurts.

In this case, it's 20 landschnet [sic?] and 20 trebuchet. Every turn I attack, and succeed with all 20 of my landschnet [sic?] but it takes 5 turns to kill 100 defenders at that rate. Are you seriously saying that I need 100 trebs and 100 landschnet [sic?] ?

With "wearing down the defenses" he meant, reducing the city's defense bonus to 0. With 20 trebuchets, you're able to do that, and from your description I assume that you're already doing it.

What's baffling is that there are AI cities with 100 defenders?! How could this have happened. I've never seen anything even remotely like this, usually I'd classify cities with more then 20 defender as "heavily defended".

20 trebs and 20 landsknechts seems like a reasonably good composition, especially when the landsknechts win every battle anyway - bit if the defender really packs 100 units in one city, and you only have a small timeframe for your attacks, then having more landsknechts wouldn't hurt.

my numbers were slightly off. the number of defenders in this case is slightly less (74) and the number of attackers is slightly more (51) but it still seems absolutely insane that this guy is hell bent on annoying me. is this normal?

*edit* also, this is from a little later in the game than when I originally posted the thread
*second edit* upon closer inspection, he has waaaay over 100 defenders, but I have no idea how to tell exactly how many
**third Edit** look at Esessa, East Coast, between our borders

OK, I built the UN, beat Mansa by a couple of turns. We've had three runs at the General Secretary's seat with it being a close vote between me and Alexander but neither of us getting enough.

There are two AI's that abstain, Mansa (1st place in score) and Saladin (4th place, behind me). I have Cautious with Mansa, and annoyed with Saladin (close neighbor and not real friendly) I'm a little befuddled since Alexander's Vassal, Frederick votes for me, but I can't seem to get over the hump with Mansa or Saladin. Any suggestions on what I can do to get one of them from Abstain every time?

Even if it goes against me i'd like to get to where we can vote on resolutions instead of the Secretary General everytime.

PS, playing Warlords.

A few wars should change things. If all else fails, vassalize the undecisive ones.

What the hell. I find Barbarian city and send about 7 chariot. There was one archer one warrior and one worker in this city. My 5 chariots was killed in battle against one stupid archer. I kill archer and wait for next turn, then barbarians build one more archer, so I pass turn again and then some how French have take archer and warrior in one turn with only one chariot. What the hell.
1. Why my chariots are so weak (most of them was having 10% strength bonus).
2. Why French choir is so strong and how the hell he take that city with one chariot?
3. What is the strongest unit to attack archer in city in early game when I can build only choir, archer, spear, axe, warrior?

And we are only one in all land, should I try to remove France?
And my empire is bankrupt. I grab to many lands and now my budget is about +10 with zero on science slider :/

Maybe the warrior moved out of the city just before the French attack?

Axeman is a good bet for the early rush. But you do get some additional speed from the chariot only force. Still I use axemen unless I have the Egypt Unique Unit.

1. Why my chariots are so weak (most of them was having 10% strength bonus).
Pay attention to the displayed victory chances and their modifiers. Was the city on a hill? Did the archer have city defense promotions? Did you attack across a river? What were your chances of victory in these battles? Was the second archer (the one built by the barbarians after your attacks) significantly weaker than the first one due to having less promotions?

2. Why French choir is so strong and how the hell he take that city with one chariot?
I don't know what you mean by "choir". If you mean "swordsman"; then the explanation is that sowrdsmen have an intrinsic bonus against cities, and often get city raider promotions on top of that. I doubt that the French killed two military defenders with one chariot, this is not possible. My guess is that the French had other units that you couldn't see. They may also have had better terrain (not attacking across a river in case you did) and better promotions.

3. What is the strongest unit to attack archer in city in early game when I can build only choir, archer, spear, axe, warrior?
Excepting the "choir" that I don't know, the best attackers for this period are axemen with city raider promotions.

And we are only one in all land, should I try to remove France?

If you're already bankrupt, you should consolidate your economy before starting further wars.

Is there a formula for how many production hammers a Great Engineer gives?

I'm 1054/1500 on statue of liberty, and have 5 turns left. I'd need 3 great people to do another golden age. Should I go ahead with it or save the GE for the next world wonder? This all depends on the first question: how many hammers does he give to complete something?

I just read "Early Rush" By Sisiutil. And go to try. I was playing on noble in one island with Koreans. I found horses in my capital so I decide to rush with chariots because Koreans was in other side of island (it was small continent in fact). My capital city start to build 1 chariot per 3 turns. So very soon I attack his three cities and that was so early and easy I lost only 4 chariots and even build pyramids :D
But later all my cities didn't expand and barbarians invasion had begun but that is not a point.
Now expanding problem is solved but I think rest of civilizations are more advanced (I didn't meet any there suppose to about 8 of them).
And I didn't find any religions so far :/ maybe some one will bring it to me or I will find islam, because all other are founded already.
