Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

If your spaceship fails (because of not having enough casings I mean), when do you get notified of that?

At the launch, the arrival or anywhere in between?

I have send sent two spaceships already, one at 20% and the other at 40%, so I guess I got lucky at having them both land safely...

Yeah, I'd say that was pretty lucky. :goodjob:

Try not to make a habit of it.

Don't you just hate it when you separate a group of workers and from the entire stack one of the ones that has already moved is selected, and you then have to click the stack once to get an active one.
Or when you select all workers in a tile (that are working on something) and the game moves to another unit... making you scroll all the way back to select the now grouped workers?
Or when there are multiple ungrouped workers in a tile (having just finished a job but still being in the work animation, the game selects one from the stack, you give it a job... and then, instead of selecting the next one... it jumps to another unit in another tile).
Or how you don't get notified when a group of workers finished a job with some of them still able to move.

It just screws up my concentration... had to rant.

Very new to Civ IV. Sometimes I can open up trades on diplomacy sometimes I just go round in a loop on the leader screen can anyone help me.

Thanks so much for your last reply it is very helpful. I'm trying everything just to start to get a grasp of the concept. Here's my newest frustration - sometimes the diplomacy trades come up sometimes I just go round in a loop with the other leader icon. Am I trying to do something that's not possible at this point in my game?

To trade gold requires Currency, to trade commodities requires trade routes, to trade techs requires Alphabet.

The AI had better cities both times and they would have beaten me if I hadn't launched that early. It looks pretty dumb though, seeing that spaceship fly without casing
for most of its body.

Do forests grow over ivory?
I know I've seen fur in forests.

Can they spread into an improved tile? (deer camp, fort)

I've seen Elephants and Jungle, never Elephants and Forest.

I don't think I've ever seen Fur and Forest, but I don't know if that's a restriction on the spawn.

Forests cannot spread into an improved tile (including roads).

Forests can spread to a tile that has a road or railroad, but the chance to do so is halved.

Yeah, I forgot Ivory goes with jungle. But fur definitely goes with forest (building a camp does not remove the forest)

BtS, PIG Mod. I have a city sitting on a river, the river runs out about 3 tiles and dumps into the ocean. My capitol is a little north of where the river comes out, sitting on the coast, but I'm not getting connected to the capitol in this city. Is this because it begins on a river and dumps to the ocean? There is a continuous water way connection but it's going from river to ocean. I have trade connections with other cities that are connected to my capitol.

I'm gonna try to figure out how to take a screen shot and load it here, but hopefully you understand what I'm getting at.

IIRC you get trade routes over rivers and coast within your borders with fishing, and outside your borders with sailing. I am guessing you have not reaserched sailing and the area is not completly within your borders. Otherwise you will need a screenie.

I'll work out getting a screen shot posted. I have Sailing and Fishing. The river runs out to the Ocean Coast and my capital sits on the coast. Just wasn't sure if there is some game mechanic that prevents going from River to Ocean as a viable trade route.

I am fairly sure that river to coast gives a trade route. You tend to get trade routes with all civs early on the "Inland Sea" map because of this. The other thing it could be is a barb city (or someone you are at war with) having a city on the river or coast between your capital and the other city.

In Orion's game, he seems to use trebuchets for collateral damage and catapults to bombard (lower defenses). Since catapults have more strength but less bombard damage (IIRC; may be wrong), shouldn't it be the other way around? Maybe trebuchets do more collateral damage?

ok, didn't see this anywhere, and couldn't find it via search. Is the experience cap on units 1026?
I just noticed that my crossbowman is stuck at 1026/1050 and isn't increasing even though I see a blue +6 when he fires on a city. Seems odd that the cap doesn't match with the max xp for a promotion.

Edit: Nevermind, it seems to be gaining xp again. I must have misread it.

Trebuchets have a substantially better chance of surviving if they attack a city. The +100% really makes a difference. Catapults just die when facing anything like Longbows or better.

Is there any way to disable automaic specialists? I know in Civ 3 you could disable city manager or whatever. I get sick of the computer automatically appointing a bunch of specialists, especially as it seems to have a preference for spies and will do it even if it causes the city to starve and lose pop.

Yes. In the city management screen there is a grid of buttons on the lower right, adjacent to the panel with the buttons for selecting your next build (buildings, units, etc.). Two of the buttons look like a person's face or head. They represent the governor. One of them is to have the governor select tiles to be worked. The other is to have the governor decide when and what kind of specialists are assigned. They are both toggles. Move the cursor over them to see which is which. The message you see will also say turn the governor off or on, depending on the current status. If it is on, click it and you will have total manual control of the specialists or tile assignments, depending on which button it is. While we're on the topic of the grid of buttons, the two above the governors are for drafting units and using gold to finish builds, assuming that you are using the correct civics for those functions. The bottom row allows you to keep the tile governor active but tell it to favor commerce, food, or hammer tiles. There is also one to avoid growth, in case you are getting in trouble with happiness or health and can't deal with the issue in other ways.

How many nuclear weapons does it take before the world turns into a desert wasteland?

In the game I'm playing so far maybe between 30-45 have been launched with not much climate change yet.
