No it should work.
The relevant table in policies.xml file uses building classes and not types
Has anyone encountered this before? If this is normal on King, OK, I'd just like to know.
@stancollins, not that is not normal. Beyond that, AIs denouncing other AIs should not interfere with your own trade deals with them.
Stancollins this shouldn't be happening. Are you using a mod ?
Does destroying barabarian encampments count towards Warmonger status?
I've recently come out of a short war that I started, where I captured and puppeted a City State then attacked its protector (Shoshone). I captured then puppeted their capital, then focused on their second city. Denmark declared on them when I took their capital. Denmark got the 2 smallest Shoshone cities leaving just the 1 I was aiming for.
I took it and puppeted it, wiping out the Shoshone. The world denounced me. I lost my 2 really good friends (Venice and Russia) and now Portugal looks to be forming some hippy-commune peace festival with the continent.
Each leader denounced me, then gave me the message about them not liking leaders who pick on weaker ones. Fair enough.
The problem is, while I was moving my forces to attack the Shoshone, a number of barabarian encampments appeared along my borders. I left them until the war was over, where I then wiped them all out in turn.
I've now started getting those "picking on weaker civs" messages again, and every leader has become even more threatened by my. My Warmonger status has gone from looking like they were concerned to being fearful of my antics plunging the world into a new dark ages. It wasn't like that in the few turns after the war.
I haven't attacked anyone but barabarians since the war ended. I'm neutral with all the City States I've met and I don't have any trespassers in their territories. I also don't have any units along my new borders with Denmark, who were also denounced by the world the turn after me. 2 civs have recently declared war on them.
This is only my second game of Civ V, and my first at Warlord difficulty. Does this all sound legitimate? Is there something subtle I've missed regarding diplomacy?
They are also denouncing me. Although the denunciations do lapse, I've had them renew them once they have lapsed. I've even had them offer a declaration of friendship then denounce me the turn after I've accepted it.
Several, actually, but none that I would think would cause this. Is this peculiar to any particular mod?
I have had that happen with unmodded games.
I think you some troubleshooting to do. I cannot help as I don't bother much with mods myself. Load all the most popular ones, see if you get this behavior. If not, add half the remaining ones in. Keeping adding in mods until you can replicate the bad behavior.
Yes, huge warmonger hit for wiping out a civ.
You become less well regarded when you are denounced. Then you get denounced because you are not well regarded. It is kind of vicious!
Yes. No. That is way the game is programmed. It takes some getting used to, and the diplomacy can be tricky.
Thanks for the reply.
Diplomacy has always been weakest skill in these games. I suppose it adds another level of strategy when going to war; territory or civility.
I'm still getting those messages about picking on other civs, despite having the largest military in the world. Hopefully other civs have spotted me churning out Cho-Ko-Nus and may start trading with me again. If I end up starting another war they've only got themselves to blame, for ignoring me.
I'd look there first.
Are you sure none of your mod touch diplomacy ?
The messages are just for flavor and sometimes they are ironic. So you may get messages about your pathetic military or weak culture -- even when you lead on those counts.
Short of nukes, it is hard to bully the AIs into civil behavior.
You can tell yourself that if you like. But the game mechanics do not work that way. Diplo is tricky to work out, but really only important if the AI is competitive with you from a military perspective. Domination games always involve lots of hate from the AIs. That said, I personally mostly prefer peaceful builder games.
None that indicate in their descriptions that they would do so.
Anyway, now that I know this is not normal for a 'King' game, I'll just do some experimenting to see if I can determine the cause.
Thanks to all who offered feedback on this.
Wait, so once Venice buys a City State it can't be rescued ever but if a CS is in an atrocious location right next to me, preventing me from founding a really awesome city, I can't raze it? And that even though I exclusively play with the Continents Plus mapscript which normally places all CS on remote islands? Gah! Screw this horrendous "Oh you can't raze that, this horrendous city is here forever" nonsense, I'm going back to Civ4!
You can raze a city that has been bought by Venice/Austria since they lose the CS status.
I have never gotten a message about being weak in culture when I was #1 in it. (With #2, yes!)
As to military, that is more complicated, but per the formula the AI uses (the same one the military adviser and demographics screen uses that greatly undervalues ranged units) I've never been #1 in Military when I've gotten a message about a pathetic military. But have been #2 according to that when I've gotten the measure.
Also the insult can't really be avoided. If you are in fact #1 in every category when the RNG tells the AI who is hostile towards you to call you up to insult, the insult given is "I wish you'd go away")
Issue resolved by disabling then re-enabling mod. Sorry!
The speed at which an AI religion spreads is BS in some games. I just started playing lvl 6 and have been doing 'okay' for the most part but I just played a game where nearly all my cities converted and none of a another AI's cities did and they were closer to the original holy city.
I just quit that game. It wasn't a bad start per se but I can't stand when the AI's hacks are just that BS.
May be due to a special promotion interfering with EUI. Try removing EUI to see if you see any other problem. Then maybe ask in the EUI thread if that is the case.
Also try to see if it's really that mod that is creating your denounce problem. I hardly see why a civ mod would do that.
This is the questions and answers thread, not the rage thread.
The AI doesn't hack. It has bonuses. 20% cheaper religious units in your case.
1. Does BNW not work properly loading scenario saves? I tried Into the Renaissance and played to about turn 140 over a couple days. Then when I loaded that save it seems to have not loaded it properly and I went from 10 happiness to -30 happiness and suddenly half of the AI hated me for warmongering when they didn't before on the same turn.
2. If you pop a prophet is it *always* better to found a religion? I'm on an immortal game and Egypt got itself a religion that includes +2 faith on quarries (I have a bunch of quarries in my empire), mosques, monasteries and buy universities/schools/labs with faith. So pretty awesome (I love higher difficulties - they found on turn 30 or so, then turn 31 they reform). I turned the prophet into a holy site instead. I had to wait a long time but eventually they started flooding me with missionaries, so half of my cities have the free buildings now. I'll get the grand temple when I finish longbow-ing Egypt's wonderspamming empire.
