Quick Questions and Answers

Little itty bitty problemo.

I have downloaded mods but can't play them because there seems to be no screen from which a play option can be accessed.

Help!

You have to start a game using mods from the mods menu, not the main menu, once you have them installed and activated. Note that it is not currently possible to play multiplayer with a mod.

Is there a way to upgrade many units in one go? I previous Civs ctrl+alt+U did it (I think).

Not that I am aware of. I guess they figure having fewer units makes this yet another feature to eliminate in the name of "streamlining."

Doesn't it seem hypocritical or unfair that you can have a civilian (Settler, Worker, Great Person) and a military unit on one hex/tile, and yet you can't have a military ship defend a transport? This is why I think Polynesia's ability is too risky, unless you use the +1 sight bonus on water to your advantage and pray that an out-of-sight Barbarian or enemy ship is lurking nearby.

I agree, though I don't know anything about Polynesia, as I don't have any of the paid DLC. As mentioned many places, embarked units should work like noncombatants, allowing 1 embarkee and 1 ship per tile, but they don't.

In terms of effective escort strategies, remember that ships exert zones of control too, so place your escorts and use coastlines appropriately. Caravels with their +2 sight bonus help a lot, and last time I checked they still keep that when they upgrade to destroyers (which have +3 sight) for a whopping +5 sight bonus total. Makes hunting down enemy navies trivial, and embarked movement much safer. You can take additional comfort in the AI's ineptitude at embarking units. They have way more problems with it than you ever will.

Aha! How do you activate them?

Two questions that weren't answered. If anyone knows this please tell me. Thank you.

1. How many hammers do Great Engineers give to the city when you use them to rush a building or project?

2. How much gold does a Merchant produce when used on a CS?

On question 2 I saw 400 gold be given. I am not sure about question 1, I will look into it.

I found a need to pillage my own improvements when an enemy was advancing on one of my cities. I didn't want him to have the full city potential. The Civilopedia says that units can pillage their own civilization's terrain improvements. However, when I tried, I didn't have the option to pillage my own improvement. I can pillage an enemy improvement but not my own. Has this feature been removed/disabled? Or is this an issue specifically with my game? Am I missing something simple?

If I found a city on a resource, does the resource disappear or do I still enjoy the benefit of the resource? thanks

You still get the resource, though with luxuries you still must have the tech that allows access the resource normally (Plantations, quarries, mines).

Found a way to spawn 3 gp with the cost of one... Not sure about this one though, maybe it's intended so. I started working workshop, temple and market at the same time in my capital, +3 towards each GP every turn at equal rate. Some turns later I pop great merchant, great artist and great engineer in the same turn.

???

This has probably been asked many times, but I can't find it anywhere...

All of my opponents are set to "random civilization" selected under advanced setup, but EVERY game it's always the same 7 opponents I have to face (I'm playing as France)...

What's going on!?

Perhaps this thread will be of use to you.

Well unfortuantely no.

The 'install games' button featured in the screenshots does not appear on my game, ever.

Help! What's going on here?

Ok I've made some progress.

I have downloaded a number of games; they're actually in the MODS file, BUT I still can't access them from the intro screens or make them play.

Mongols appears in "scenarios" but I can't find this item on my hard drive, which may or may not have something to do with the problem.

It shouldn't be this hard.

What's wrong with this game?

Can anyone help.

Hi,

Trying to improve my game and I have learned a lot in this forum.

Question:
- I have seen a couple of times that members advise to loan things from the AI. Haven't figured out how to loan things, is it the same as demanding?

Thank you in advance.

No, you do it through trade (I assume that's what you mean by 'loan'). It's like demanding, but you give something in return. A common trade would be one luxury resource for another luxury resource.

where's the overview of the current deals I have with other civilizations?
and how do I find out who's in war with whom among AIs?

I have a stupid question, sorry. When I choose to play multiplayer all I see is a list of people's games and they all always seem to say yes in the DLC column. Does this really mean I can't play online without buying DLC? If so, that really sucks.:(

Open the diplomacy screen (the laurel wreath around Earth button in the upper right corner of the screen), and press "Diplomacy Overview." Select the middle tab, to see your Deal History, current and expired. Select the right hand tab "Global Politics" for a run down of each major Civ's relationships.

Multiplayer games require all participating players to have the same DLC's active. I've never played pick up games with strangers, but I suspect if even the free Mongol DLC is activated in game setup the game will list as "yes" for DLC. Your best bet would be to discuss the game ahead of time with other players, to make sure they only use DLC you own if you don't want to buy the others.

Not a bug. Unlike Civ IV, where all great person votes were pooled and then a weighted but random great person popped out, the tallies for each great person type in CiV are kept separate. If you'd done the equivalent action in Civ IV, your first great person would have arrived three times quicker.
