Quick Questions and Answers

There's no decent way to do this currently although you can technically do it through the Tuner's Lua Console by using functions such as pPlot:SetTerrainType(). It's not the easiest thing, you have to edit mostly blind, and you have to save and reload to update the map, but it does work if you're desperate. :p

Is it my PC or does loading a game take an inordinate amount of time?? (My PC is not that old!)

Probably your PC, or graphics card. Or else you are impatient and think 20 seconds is an inordinate amount of time.:mischief:

Make sure your game has patched through Steam properly, as prior to the 1.0.0.62 patch save games frequently bloated badly.

Other than that, try lowering your graphics settings a little. The game takes disproportionately long loading all the graphic doodads, and I've noticed very little appearance downgrade running at lower settings (my opinion, of course).

Question: When I start the game as usuall... everything goes nice,no laggs,no nothing...but after I turn in the medieval era.. the whole game is lagging!!! and damn hard!!
is it because of my hardware or is it a bug?

Well, without knowing what your hardware is, that would be a bit hard to tell you. ;)

Most probably it is not a bug and what you are experiencing is the slowdown that happens naturally, especially on computers that only meet the minimum hardware requirements and/or if you're playing on large or huge maps with lots of civs and city states. Even standard map and civs could push your computer quite hard if it's not all that powerful.

I've posted all over and looked for an answer from someone. All my system requirements are met, except I have a ATI Radeon 2400 graphics card. Can I still play this game?

That's a worryingly underpowered card, as far as I know.

To be safe, you can try the demo for the game first. If you have trouble running that, you'll no doubt have trouble running the game. It should be downloadable from the civ5 steam page. (You will need to install the steam client before playing the demo)

quick question:

could someone start an abbreviations and lexicon thread for Civ 5? I know what ICS is after reading about it for a few weeks but I have never seen it expanded and have no idea what it stands for.

Subquestion: What does ICS stand for?

The problem is I have a mac and there is no demo for it.

Hi,
Also, why is the default zoom depth only configurable in a config file rather than on the game settings screens?

The reason options in-game is very limited has to do with psychology/philosophy on what a game should be.

Many people who engage in open source games often fail on this important point, they put in tons of customizations, so much that the gamer feels he is going nuts.

Well, Sid Meier have shared his opinion on this. Listen carefully.

"If a game contains too much customization options, the gamer will feel that the game is not finished and that he is the creator of the game, lacking a standard will make gamers flee"

Sid Meier said it is extremely important to narrow down options as far as possible wherever possible. If the game contains too many customizations the gamer will feel like he is the creator of the game or that the game is unfinished.

Games should have a standard. It's sort of like shepherd-sheep relationship philosophy we're talking here. If there is no standard, there is no flock of sheeps either.

I had this philosophy myself before I heard Sid talk about it, so Sid is in agreement with me

Beware this does NOT mean there will be less customizations available, it simply just means that they will be hidden out of view, to create a sensation of consolidation among gamers. This is an extremely important policy and game philosophy.

Interesting philosopy. However, despite narrowing down these options, in practice the latter does not feel to be true to me in every case.

For examples I have played those Firaxis games with various gaming experiences:

Civilization 3: I played it a few times, but I did not really liked it a lot. I am not sure why. Maybe because the graphics were not good enough and the user interface was very clumsy. I moved on to Civilization 4 when it came available.

Civilization 4: I played it a lot. I really like the game. I played it for months, then play something else, after that returning. Repeating this cycle many times. Add ons like the bug mod, which gives more options enhances the game play to me, not feeling the game is unfinished. Graphics, sounds, and music are a lot better than Civilization 3.

Railroads: I played all scenario's, it was different than Railroad Tycoon 3; more cartoonyish. I like the game element of multiple tracks and switches, but I felt it was poorly implemented by my taste. Eventually I discovered OpenTTD which has more options to lay complicated tracks. To me this is a better experience.

Pirates: This is a game which I agree most on with this philosophy. It is a simple game, while staying challenging and fun. Graphics, sound, and music are good enough. There are many mini games like navigating, trading, treasure hunting, sea warfare, land warfare, fencing, dancing, and simple fleet management. As an allrounder one the of best games ever made.

Civilization 5: Expecting more of Civilization 4, this is a disappointment. It is something different than Civilization 4. It's an ok game on it self, but not what I am looking for. I played it a few times and then moved on to play Empire: Total War which is a hybrid game consisting of an even more simplified Civilization and a RTS in the Total War series style.

OK... Replying to an earlier thought - 2 or 3 minutes is a long time.

Your answer makes sense. How do I patch Civ5? How do I tell the patch level?

Every time I try to open the modbuddy it says that one or more components are missing and that I have to reinstall it. I've done that many times now, but the bug goes on...

Any ideas?

How do you "connect" to city-states, especially when they are on other continents?

You don't have to connect to them, unless you get the "build road" quest. I never got that quest from a CS on another continent.
