Quick Questions and Answers

Hi all,

Been playing Civ casually since Civ IV. Reading here has made me realise that I need to have a 'vision' of progression when starting. One thing I struggle with is finding the correct number of cities.

I tend to play standard continents maps and typically I expand quite a bit. Then, eventually everyone starts to hate me for my expansion and declares war (currently at war with four nations, one of which is Russia with a sizeable military).

Any advice on how many cities to settle? The AI seemed to ave a lot less than me.

I know it's probably a noobish question but I am just trying to delve a little deeper into Civ.

Thanks in advance folks!

Right. Once you have the required tech to upgrade, the upgrade buton will appear, but will be greyed out until you are both in your own borders and have enough gold to do the upgrade.

And if the upgraded unit requires a resource (like oil or aluminum), the button will be greyed out until you have that resource available.

Again, just making sure as english is not my first language. When they saying " x count still required: y" then they saying that this x still needs to be build and y is the number of how many things should be build? Like "Monument count still required: 1 St. Louis" tells me that I still need to build monument in St. Louis but "Barracks count still required: 5" means that I need to build 5 barracks but it doesn't matter in which city I'll build them. Am I getting this right?

I think you always need the building in all cities, but I don't think it shows the city names once you need it over so many cities. I think I've seen three cities listed, but I'm not sure about four.

Until you get to the higher difficulties you can get away with founding as many cities as you can without sending your happiness too far into the red.

But the amount of cities you found depends on your strategy, and your initial social policy choices. Generally, Tradition is for smaller empires (up to 4 cities) and Liberty is for larger empires. Again, this is a very general rule.

To prevent the AI from declaring war when you are expanding aggressively you need to have a military. I usually hard-build an archer in each of my cities as soon as they are founded as this is enough to ward away any declarations of war. But on the hardest difficulties different strategies are required.

Intercept, when this is clicked does that mean that "if" enemy aircraft is approaching or is near by my planes will engage? I'm not clear on how that works and couldn't find anything specific to the question in the forums.

Edit: Okay, I think I figured it out. You hit the Plane Symbol, mark an area on the map then click intercept, meh, I could be wrong about that, hehe. I did create some planes and it appears they intercepted on their own? I have no idea what happened. I think I need a step by step outline.

Thanks. The world has made peace with me now. Trailing behind in points though. JUst playing this to its inevitable conclusion before starting again :)

What difficulty are you on? How far into the game is it? You may feel the game is out of reach but the game may be salvageable.

Getting a diplomatic victory is really easy. Science victory is also manageable as the AI sucks at getting it. If the other civs' capitals cities are on the coast or other easy to reach locations you could even snipe them to win a domination victory.

Lagging behind in score is only bad for a Time Victory, but it doesn't mean you're doing bad. But yeah, it could mean there's an inevitable conclusion coming. Try to find a good AI city and conquer it without too much losses. That way you'll hamper the AI and you'll help yourself, if you can handle the unhappiness. Just waiting defensively for the inevitable won't do anything.....

The pace/speed of your expansion is more important in Civ5. You'll have to fight your instincts to build a lot of cities quickly. Often people wait quite a few turns to build their second city, and longer to build the third. I've read recommendations that you wait until you have built libraries in both of the first two cities, and built the National College (which requires libraries in all cities) before founding your third city.

In Civ4, it was easier to found a city, build a granary, and let it grow to the point where it helped your empire. In Civ5, it can take longer for a new city to establish itself and not drive your happiness into the red.

Good advice people. During the Great War of many nations (!!) I just defended my borders until America and Russia got bored. They wouldn't negotiate peace when I asked though. Weirdly, Russia asked for a lot but America just asked for peace only.

I was going to conquer a couple of cities of sulieman but he chickened out once the two major powers dropped out. Cracked on with my research tree though. Think I am going to go for a science/tech win but it will be close with Russia.

Labor Day weekend I bought Civ V from GameStop. I assumed that the $12.00 dollar price for the Gold Edition was a Special Sale. When I Purchased it it said Gold Edition DLC, which I downloaded via Gamestop.

I then took the Game Code and applied it to Steam because I wanted to run the game through Steam, but since I'm noticing things that people have with the Gold Edition (Caravansary) I'm wondering if I have the actual Gold Edition or I need to download some additional content:

My Main Menu Screen (Is this the Gold Edition Version): Menu Screen Shot

Also, if this is the Gold Edition shouldn't Horseback Riding indicate Caravansary? I've been wondering why I can't trade (as Caravansary is not listed). I thought it was because I was playing on "Warlord" (easy) and the AI would control my Trade Routs for me, thus it wouldn't appear as a Game Option? Horseback Riding Research Image

If this isn't the Gold Edition or if there is something I need to additionally download, what do I need to do?

*** With a little help in another thread we figured out that the problems I was having was because I didn't have Brave New World. I thought the Gold Edition was the latest edition. Thanks for all your guys patience.

It doesn't have the latest expansion, the Gold Edition does not include BNW. You will need to buy the BNW expansion for the feature(s) you are looking for.

There is some confusion because some stores are offering deals with the Gold Edition and BNW, but if you buy these you get BNW as a separate item.

Hi, could anyone please explain to me what bpt means? I know that's abbreviation for breakers per turn, but I have no idea what it means and how to calculate it, and how it indicates you're in a good spot or not throughout the game.

It is beakers per turn. At the top of the screen is a display of research/beakers per turn, and mouse hovering gets you a tooltip showing the current computation. In general, each unit of population yields 1 beaker per turn, which is subject to various multipliers -- some embedded in buildings (e.g., Library provides 1 beaker per 2 units of population) and others due to social policies (e.g., the Rationalism opener provides +10% (15% pre-BNW) science bonus when your empire is happy).

Yep, that was my issue I didn't have BNW, which I though came with the Gold Edition. Man, I was pulling my hair out trying to figure out why I didn't have certain features I saw YouTubers using. Thanks for clearing this up. I did buy BNW yesterday and I'm noticing a hella faster response during turns and a general performance increase too!
