R&L01 - Monarch Space Race

:rotfl: I needed a good laugh, thanks. (at least I assum you are referring to a saying about getting medieval on your ___)

Correct.

It would seem the RNG was just waiting for me to play our elites. And to have an elite warrior lose to a barb, flawlessly I might add, is just wrong.

OK, that's enough whining for now.

That's one way to add a third trait to your culture.

Exploit or inspired strategic genius? Don't care. If the Sumerians are still around the next time I'm up I'll tip my hat to them and smile.

Can I get a vote from the rest of the team? I vote for keeping them if their last town is is small and has little culture (and little use to us). If it's a major city that we have to worry about their other cities flipping back to I say we cull them off like the dog's they are :D

Either way is fine with me, but if we lose a city to a flip, then erase them.

I got it - Play within the 48hr time limit from this post. (more than likely sooner)

72 hours is actually OK, but 48 is fine.

Either way is fine with me, too.

Hurry up Mistfit I'm next. I've been waiting several hours already. :)

I guess I should go play KA01 first so I can put you up there as well.

PreTurn:
Eh..emm... Just for reference purposes we are at 670 AD (jb's last save was named BC) It only took me 3 cups of coffee to figure out where the heck I put the downloaded save
I make peace with the Sumerians because it would take quite a bit of time to get over to their little size one city on the Northern island. We can save some cash from WW inbetween. If needed we can Bump them off after 20 turns. Almost no chance of flipping. (I move our army out of Sumer anyway) No sense in being proven wrong and having that city flip and loose our army.

With the war over I am able to turn lux down to 10% saving 30 some odd gpt and I turn down science to 40% turning all tax men into scientist and Education is still due in 1 turn.

Switch a couple of builds to personal preferences.

IBT:
We Learn Education and start on Astronomy
Great Lib is obsolete

Turn 1 (680AD)
Knock the Mountain Barb horse off of his perch

Turn 10 (770AD)

Fix Chenju - Hire Tax Man
Unload Spear and Settler to the island to the east. Settle him where he stands

Hand Down Report:
There is a settler and Horse in a galley outside of Teagu on the Northern isle. I was planning to send them over to grab the cow between the Arab/Celt/Summerian cities.
There is a large Tundra island to the NE over by the witch (egypt) My guess is there will be oil there although no one has settled it yet as far as I can see.
I rushed the Harbor in Suwon to allow the lux to be shipped there to help with happiness.
Ship a load of workers to the Northern isle once the marsh is gone (I hate marsh and jungle)

'Da Save

good job:).

Where do we want to go with the techs? I would like to get Ecomonics (for Smiths) after Banking then head for ToG and Newton's. What's everyone else's thoughts?

I haven't looked at the save yet, but rrau's suggested tech path sounds OK. I think we should be able to start some prebuilds for the upcoming Wonders. I need to see what our research rate is first.

If I don't play this tonight I won't get another chance until late Sunday night or Monday AM. I'll post an update later, in case the next player wants to grab it over the weekend if I don't play tonight.

Roster -
RowAndLive - On Deck
Detlef Richter -
rrau -
jb1964 -
Misfit - just played
DJMGator13 - UP

Rather than switch, I'm going to let Gator pick it up Sunday night. I'm up in SGoTM4 right now.

I'll be able to play Saturday, I did not go off this weekend.

Before I play I have some thoughts about our current position in the game. I'm basing this off a review of the top 3 space finished from COTM4 which was a Monarch level game.

Here are some stats from the top 3 space finished:
nbarclay 1425AD launch - 94 cities, generating 2154 beakers per turn at game end
Cuivienen 1575AD launch - 132 cities, generating 2158 bpt
denyd 1754AD launch - 119 cities, generating 2612 bpt
The final saves from each of these games can be downloaded from the GOTM results page.

Our current game:
We are currently making 240 bpt which will average 6-8 turns per MA techs. We need to really pickup the tech pace, we have 6 more MA techs to research not counting Economics & Military Tradition. We are also going to need a lot more cities to achieve a 4 turn research rate in the Ind. Age and Modern Age.

Here's a look at the tech cost using CivAssist (Tech Calc showed the same first discovery cost for the techs)

I think we ought to forget about the AW with EGY and really try to concentrate on achieving our best Space date. I think we are already behind a pre 1500AD launch date, based on some personal notes I have on a pre1500 Diplo win. In that game I hit the Ind Age around 750AD (our current point) but had not used my GA yet, and it was an Emporer game where the tech pace is faster. I think my personal best for space is a mid 1800's launch so I'm no expert on this victory condition, but I haven't gone for space in a long time.

I'll wait to play for some feedback, because it will affect how we handle EGY. Another thing to consider is should we go ahead and gift everyone to tech parity to pick up the pace?

I'm not hard on a pre-1500AD launch. It can be 2050 for my happiness. The AW with Egypt was for flavor. Granted, we haven't seen it yet, and it does complicate the launch, but unless we can PROVE that we can't win via space at Monarch on this size map, I think we should keep it. However, I also don't want the team to get bored from "just another space race" if it drags.

Comments from others?

Winning the space race from this point on should not be a problem. We have more cities (33) than the other civs (Celts 17, Maya 13, others less than 10 each) and we are already several techs ahead of everyone except Maya who are only down Astronomy. The only obstacle now would be if we do not have all the required resources in our territory.

I'm not opposed to the AW with EGY, but I would also like to see how fast we can launch. We need more cities as I stated earlier so the AW part would just direct our attention to EGY rather than a nearer civ.

If we are not concerned with a launch date then I can see this game turning into a double victory condition win for us, Space and Domination on the same turn.

What about keeping the AW with egypt, and taking her cities from her, irrigatethem, and cultivate scientists over there?

Since Row and rrau expressed interest in keeping the EGY AW and I'm not opposed to it either, I'll keep the variant in play.

I'll play and post today.
