Random Deity Troublemaking, inherited 1125BC

I played 15 turns to leave at a more rounded date of 750BC. Not much happened anyway.

Early: switched production to units, especially workers. Increased lux rate to 20% as Veii grew. Watched 3 AIs trample all over our land. Germany is on the receiving end of a dogpile from the other 3 known civs!

Middle: double-whipped 38 shields to complete Cumae's crucial temple. Watched the AIs trade units without making progress. Germany is holding its own because the fighting is just outside its borders, but if this continues for much longer it will be crushed by the sheer numbers of the other 3 AIs. Perfect situation for us. We can bide our time and nip in as Germany is on the verge of collapse and take some cities...

In 950BC Sumer built Artemis, Constantinople built the Great Library and Lisbon built the Hanging Gardens...so we know now who the other AI civs are, and they are further ahead of the known AIs in tech!!! Madrid completed Mausollos a turn later.

In 925BC capitalized on the only 2fer available, though a poor one: bought Code of Laws from Spain for 157g + 13gpt; bought Mysticism from Germany for Code of Laws, 5g + 1gpt. This showed Germany lacked polytheism (still did at the end of my turn) which the other AIs know, so another 2fer is available as soon as we can trump up the cash.

Late: iron hooked, begin legion production. Mongols demand and receive 20g. A nearby volcano becomes active, possibly endangering our iron source. Moscow builds the Great Wall.

We're making progress and our military is beginning to take shape. We're still probably 20-25 game turns away from being able to wage war. Next player should continue the buildup.

Nad...just played

Just so everyone knows, I'll have limited internet access during the workday, due to a significant increase in my workload. I'll be checking and playing each night.

This is one of those Fridays where lots of homework is due. So I probably won't be able to play tonight (SGOTM4 comes first anyway), won't be home tomorrow night, so I'll play Saturday morn.

750 BC (0) - Switch Veii to settler. It will still be able to make Legions at size 7 in 5 turns, and as long as the others are going to be doing some razing of German cities, we might as well be ready to do the replacing.

IT - Germans kill lots of Mongol units.

730 BC (1) - The volcano is smoking. Maybe it will take out some German swords. Or destroy our iron road. The IT forest chop screwed up Veii's production, as it only gets 4 spt now, instead of 6.

IT - Germans have another interesting IT. They finish SoZ in Berlin, kill three Mongol archers without loss, but lose two swordsmen in the eruption. It was kind of weird to just see them disappear.

710 BC (2) - Nothing.

IT - Russians get lots of gold, don't know where from because I wasn't paying very close attention before.

690 BC (3) -

IT - Russians learn Literature and the Mongols start Sun Tzu's. We are quickly falling behind with little means of catching up.

670 BC (4) - This is the best example of wilbill's "Let's you and him fight" that I've ever seen. Should we consider giving one side an RoP so that they gain an advantage?

650 BC (5) -

IT - Mongols and Russia allied against Spain.

Nothing really happened. We are really behind in techs. We do have more legions that may eventually help fix that problem, as long as they are used before pikes are widespread.

I have it. Plan on setting Microbe up for an attack on Germany. I should have the game back up within 24 hours.

Hehe at Germany losing swords to our volcano. That's what you get for trespassing! *shakes fist* Although I can see it hasn't stopped them ...

Is Spain fighting Germany? I could see giving ROP to them, maybe. Russia doesn't need it -- they share borders -- and the Mongols are too aggressive to trust free in our borders, IMO.

Should we really be building legions out of Pisae and Neapolis? The two towns barely have two shields between them. Would workers be better?

I haven't been severely behind in tech for a long long time -- should be interesting.

Renata

Workers probably would, but they already had barracks and they have been building workers, so I decided to stick a military unit in the midle to allow it to get bigger. Next player is perfectly free to change that, of course.

Good progress. Should be some fun turns ahead, especially when the wars start :).

Pre-flight – Isabella is at war with the Russians and the Mongols. Spain would be a very good target for our war. We really aren’t using our workers very well, with single workers working by themselves. Of our 11 workers, seven are working on something all by themselves, two are mining a mountain that we won’t work for quite a while. Pisae and Neapolis are making one spt. I switch those over to workers, since we still have a lot of work to be done.

Early - Literature => Philosophy Although we really can’t sell it for much at the moment. :hmm:
Russian and Spain sign a treaty.
A volcano erupts and two Germans become well done.
Veii: Legion=>legion
Ravenna: worker=>spear (homeland defense)
Cumae: worker=>worker
Pompeii: legion=>legion

Middle - Toledo starts learning to speak German
With Toledo’s fall there is a city spot to poach. Move a stack of legions and a settler towards the spot.
Germans and Mongols sign a treaty.
Pompeii: legion=>legion
Veii: Legion=>settler
Pisae, Neopolis: worker=>worker

Late - Bismark wants to sell us ivory for some outrageous price. No thanks.
Found Hispalis. I buy math from the Mongols for Literature & 88G.
I Sell Literature to the Germans for Philosophy & 22G. Select HBR.
Russia declares on the Germans.
Watch the Spanish raze a Mongol city.
I find a sea crossing and start a suicide run and find a little speck of dirt on the Northwestern ocean.
Pompeii, Antium: legion=>legion

After Action – We have ten legions in and around Hispalis. I would march on Barcelona and bring some settlers, Spain’s culture is very high. Our workers are mostly ganged up. Probably need some strategic roads towards the east.

I'm very surprised the Germans managed to turn the tables and now Spain is under the cosh. It's been a bloodbath so far, and the AIs are doing us a favour by hammering each other. Time for our legions to enter the fray?

Woohoo, a poached city and two more German swords lost to our tame volcano. :p We should be able to build the FP now, right? Just asking: I know we don't exactly have the shields to spare at the moment.

Nice work, bugs. :)

Renata

Unfortunately no. Conquests thing. 10 cities needed for FP on standard map.

Ok, thanks.

Renata

Got it. Looks like we can do some 2-fer with Germany.

EDIT: I see Bugsy suggested attacking Spain. I like Germany's cities better but I guess fighting spain would get us some techs that we could trade with Germany. Another choice is Russia, but I see some MDIs/pikes around, and it appears to be the most powerful nation.

I suggest playing it by ear. We certainly don't want to fight the strongest power yet, and amazingly that would appear to be Germany. So either Russia or Spain is fine with me. The most important consideration, IMHO, should not be techs but cities...which cities/areas would best fit our empire?

The reason I was thinking "Not Germany" was the number of German units in our lands. Spain was on her heels and we could do some serious damage there. Plus get some techs.
