Random Deity Troublemaking

I thought there was a safe galley crossing up by that tundra town? Or did you get past that and sink somewhere else?

Shame about Byzantium :(

350 AD (0) - No changes except for tile assignment in Hispalis. I don't want to rush the courthouse. We are militaristic and about to war again, so I'll give that a chance. Instead, switch from grassland to hill for one turn. Couple extra shields and then we can switch back next turn.

IT - Mongols and Germans make peace. Gpt jumped to 143 after deal with Byzantines ended.

360 AD (1) - Deal ends, I guess it is time to move towards Germany, before Russia completely finishes them off. Syracuse is founded, and just in time as the Byzantines dropped off a settler pair. Nad mentioned something about if the Spainish die and we had a per turn deal with them it would hurt our rep. I didn't know that that would be the case, but I decide not to by Theology from them anyway, even though I would usually buy from the weakest. So 270g and 50gpt gets us Theology. It takes 27gpt on top of Theology to get Fuedalism from Portugal. No more decent twofer available, but we don't have the gold anyway so it doesn't matter.

370 AD (2) - Pay Mongols 17gpt for Incense.

400 AD (5) - Maybe Hispalis isn't such a good spot for FP. It just flipped to the Russians. We can almost get Invention from the Germans for Theology and lump sum, so I hold off on declaring for one more turn. Rethink that, and get 75 gold from Byzantines for 5gpt. Then buy Invention for Theology and 279g. So I guess I didn't need to borrow so much from the Byzantines. Now declare war on Germany.

420 AD (7) - Our elite already has a couple of victories, but no leader. Also, the people have chosen their favorite leader, and it is me. Sorry to break it to you all. They built a nice hall and did some landscaping at the palace, more than they have done for anyone else.

IT - Russians soften up the defenses some at Leipzig.

430 AD (8) - Leipzig captured without loss. Don't raze because the Germans are falling quickly, probably won't be alive by the end of my turns.

440 AD (9) - The replacement settler that wasn't used for Leipzig settles near ivory.

Okay, lux is down to 0, with two entertainers and one taxman in the empire, due to having ivory now. Meant to have a screenshot, but closed Civ before hitting Prt Scr, or something else. Anyway, nothing pasted. It looks like Russia is going to finish off Germany the next IT. If not, we have a couple units in place to capture Berlin, but most of the stack is still a turn behind. We'll either need to up culture or take on the Russians militarily, because they keep on capturing our cities peacefully. Frustrating. I don't know if we are catching up techwise or not, be we still have Portugal to trade with. Shakespeare's has been started by someone, if that says anything.

Military builds might be changed to libraries if we want to start doing some self research. Continuing to add military and not doing much with it is just digging the hole deeper in terms of gpt. So a quick buildup and take Russia (which doesn't look advisable - they have quite a few knights that have made their way through our territory) or find another enemy. But Russia is the only one that really makes sense to attack, as strong as they are.

I have it although it may be Saturday before I get it up.

Good luck, Bugs!

I'm having forum-access issues on my home computer which may or may not prevent me from checking in here between a couple hours from now and Monday morning. (What would I do without my work computer? :lol: ) It doesn't look like the game will come around to me again fast enough for it to matter (and who knows, maybe the computer problems will just go away), but just in case, I wanted to let you know.

Pre-flight – 450 AD – Bismark doesn’t have any techs worthwhile to give us for peace.

IBT – Berlin doesn’t fall.
Cumae: court=>FP
Pisae: settler=>LB

1. 460 AD – There are at least two defenders in Berlin. There are five Russian knights ready to attack. I will have six attackers next turn. So I hold off. Our entire economy is a “close” in getting gunpowder from Russia.

IBT – Mongols and Byzantines sign an MA against Spain. Berlin loses two pikes, there appears to be one elite pike left.
Pompeii: MDI=>MDI
Antium: treb=>treb
Byzantines build Leo’s

2. 470 AD – There are two defenders in Berlin. There are at least nine Russian attackers within range next turn. I will either take Berlin this turn or never. Kill a pike, lose a legion. Now there is a spear. Kill the spear, there’s another! Lose an archer, but kill the spear. A redlined pike defends. Attack with an elite legion and…
RDT-Berlin.jpg

There are a lot of unhappy Berliners. Start a temple. The Germans are destroyed.

IBT – Theodora demands 36G. Fine you witch.
The Mongols capture Valencia. We get our first AC from the Statue of Zeus.
Veii: MDI=>MDI
Neapolis: court=>MDI

3. 480 AD – Cathy is moving most of her units out of the German peninsula. If we can gather enough units along our southern boarder to fight a holding action, we could probably capture the German peninsula. I will start planning that campaign. Start irrigating towards Syracusa.

IBT – At least forty Mongols move next to Madrid.
Viroconium: treb=>pike

4. 490 AD – I think I can manage a two-fer. Purchase Education from Sumeria for 45gpt & 466G. Purchase Gunpowder from Portugal for Education and 12gpt. We have two sources of saltpeter. Both are on the southern frontier with Russia.
In a move that some people are going to call :smoke: I sell saltpeter to Russia for Chemistry & 1G. I figure, given our relative power curves, it is going to either get captured by Russia in a war or it is going to get demanded of us before we are ready.

IBT – The Spanish are destroyed.
Pompeii: MDI=>musket
Antium: treb=>treb
Ravenna: treb=>musket

Highlights of the remaining turns:
510 – Cathy demands 20G. :p OK.
520 - I sell Dyes to Sumeria for wines, TM & 10G.
Sumeria is HUGE!

After Action – There are Russians running everywhere. I am having some serious seller’s remorse about giving saltpeter to the Russians. We may be seeing cavalry soon. My apologies to the team.

They would have demanded it -- I don't think that was a mistake at all. And if they *do* declare war on us, at least they won't be able to build any more nasties right away.

One question re: Russia -- their UU is still the cav-equivalent in C3C, right? Have they built the right wonders to trigger their GA already? Or will we start it if we go to war with them? This could have some impact on when or if we want to. We're going to need ridiculous amounts of artillery and fast units to hold them off for long enough to capture the peninsula even without a GA.

Beeyootiful job with Berlin, by the way. A large city we don't have to raze? With a wonder inside that's actually of some use? Just peachy. I have a question about the ancient cavs, by the way. Do they come out vet or reg depending on whether or not the city has a barracks? I've only built the SoZ once so far, and that city already had a barracks at the time, so I don't know the answer.

My computer has decided to cooperate for the moment, by the way -- I will say voodoo prayers to keep it going. :)

Renata

That's right the Russian UU is the Cossack, a cav replacement. Good thinking on the Russian GA timing Renata.

Zeus!! :cool:

Very nice going guys. But it looks like the hard stuff is in frnt of us...monstrous Russia :p

Microbe...UP NOW
el_filet...ON DECK

Anyone seen Microbe? Bed-head's post was 2 1/2 days ago; Microbe's last post in this thread was over a day before that.

Renata

Heee. I have enough trouble remembering who I follow, much less the rest of the roster, but I will try. :)

Cheers, and good luck with the monstrous civs left on our continent. :D

Renata

I'll try and remember to put up a note for you microbe, I used to do it regardless of who followed me, but this change in routine has messed me up.

preturn: OMG, look at Sumeria!

I fire many specialists - I hope they were just for the last turn.

I sell WM around and get 32g+1gpt. A lot of gpt deal will expire next turn so we could make some trades.

Only good thing is we have all resources.

I switch MDIs or longbows to musketmen.

We are paying quite a bit for units, so some more towns are needed. I'd like to put a town on the horses. Oh wait, we do have a settler in Veii, so it goes for that mission.

Good thing is Russia still hasn't got cossacks yet, despite having saltpeter.

560AD: Russia starts Shakespear.

570AD: I can sell our only saltpeter to Mongols for Metallurgy+2gpt+14g. I decide to do so and only build knights during the next 20 turns. We need to catch up in tech.

Russia DOES have Military Tradition, but military advisor says its best unit is knight?

Dyes+46gpt+260g get us Banking from Russia. I could have bought Military Tradition, but we couldn't build cavs anyway, and banks will improve our financial situation.

Portugal just got Chemistry, and I sell Metallurgy to it for Chivalry+20g+1gpt. Sadly we cannot trade for its extra saltpeter.

I'm shockingly glad to see nobody has Economics! I set min to Economics as that's what we can really do.

IBT renew incense with WM+20gpt+11g. Viroconium produces a regular musket?!

580AD: I disband a warrior.

IBT Mongols start Magellan's. This means it just got Navigation, and could buy saltpeter from Portugal.

590AD: have to hire a taxman in Veii - but we don't need cathedral urgently as we have plenty of food, so I start bank first.

IBT Sumeria starts Smith's. :(

600AD: Byzantine also has Economics. We could buy Economics with almost all our gpt, but won't be able to make 3fer as we'll only have less than 10 gpt left and this is a cheap tech.

IBT our galley sinks.

610AD: mined mountain next to Veii and FP is 1-turn earlier. Found horse city. We could found another one in the tundra SE to Leipzig.

640AD: Byzantine starts Newton's. Portugal got Banking. :( But it might have got it before and I only noticed it now.

650AD: Portugal got Military Tradition?!

We *might* be able to make a 2-fer of Astronomy with Portugal. Maybe we should wait 5 more turns for the saltpeter deal with Russia to make sure. I suggest we keep selling our saltpeter to Russia as Portugal has an extra anyways. As of now I don't think we can fight the AI, especially vs Cossacks. Better just build knights and mass-upgrade later.

I would also settle on the hill NW to Berlin to secure a second ivory, so we could trade to Mongols. Maybe switch Berlin to settler and rush it there.

Another town we could settle is the hill SW to Cumae, so our land can be connected.

Our land is very difficult to defend. I feel that we need railroads before we could attack, and better get infantry and arti.

I tried to find the roster but the first post is not updated, so I gave up. :)

Sumeria is monsterous. It is the first time I've seen an AI with cities named "New _____" and they have several.

If we can survive the Russian monster, we'll have to deal with the Sumerian monster. Diplo attempt anyone?
