@cybrx: How bad are the flame works at PI? I know the ones at TWC are pretty bad (I felt dirty just lurking in their OT).
To be fair it does depend on where you go (and once you've visited a subforum frequently enough you should be able to easily tell which threads are trouble) as some places are relatively civil and rarely have any flaming, such as some of the modding subforums (other than potential modder drama, but that's to be expected, PI or not). However, sometimes if you're unlucky and/or unaware and/or sadistic you'll stumble on bad threads and they really vary from subforum to subforum.
For instance, troublesome topics specific to the CKII subforum include the possibility of adding China and the rest of Asia to the game (expect pages of back and forth arguments between people who think adding in China is a great idea, and people who think adding China is problematic; oftentimes decent arguments are thrown on both sides, but it just gets ugly eventually); the skin tone of certain portrait DLCs ( when the Mediterranean portraits first came out there was a thread complaining about it that ended up one of the biggest non-generic threads ever; except racist stuff and "those people aren't white enough/are too white!"); and Hellenic pagans (not as bad nowadays, again, but back in its heyday the threads also grew heavily in size). Now that's not to say these positions are necessarily bad or good per se; for instance in the China debates I lean in the "anti-China" camp (ie don't want China added to the game), but I honestly don't get involved because the fights just end up between fanboys who insult anyone who disagrees with them on one end, and fanboys who insult anyone who disagrees with them on the other end.
In the EUIV subforums you get into arguments about whether the Western nations/Europe is too ahistorically powerful, which eventually leads to flamewars that deal things like people claiming the Amerindians were barbaric savages, or someone claiming Frederick the Great could've easily conquered China with 20k men, some racist and ultranationalist nonsense, and other ugliness. I don't go to the EUIV forums much so I'm not as aware of what other topics there are, but there you go.
Of course, sometimes people start flamewars over game mechanics that they like or don't like (often about bugs, or new features added in DLCs, or balancing issues - real or not), and those get pretty ugly too.
All in all, you will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy. With a bit of luck and skill, any thread can devolve into a proper flame war. Except maybe 4 chan. But I have heard that even 4 chan has its weird, unspoken code of conduct and order-within-the-chaos, so to speak.
To be fair, though, I think it's easier to start a TES-related flamewar on the right TES-related sites if you say the wrong things, but PI forum ones can get ugly.
