I have a dilemma. Uni applications are due in in a bit over a month, and I don't know what to do. can change my preferences up until January or something, but I've gotta make some sort of decision soon, and I don't know what.

I have to decide what uni course to select by the end of this month and I still have little idea of what I wanted to do.

The main issue now is whether I will put medicine as a preference. Medicine seemed appealing to me at the start of the year, but now I doubt whether the course will be worth it, if I can really cope with it, or even if I really wanted study medicine. I keep getting contradictory advice, and it's really hard to think about this sort of thing while having to worry about Yr 12 study, exams, and a host of other things in my personal life I won't talk about here. It's partly my fault I guess, as I didn't really think about this last year or early this year. In fact I avoided thinking about the future - it scares me. That's a luxury I no longer have.

Does Victoria have a special admissions test for medicine? In NSW, there's one (UMAT) that was just on, but I didn't do that (although about half my friends did- I'm going to know a lot of doctors), so my options are narrowed slightly. I don't know what I want to do in two weeks time, let alone for the rest of my life, and I kept putting thinking about it off, too. At the moment I think I might put down for B Laws/B International Studies, just in case I somehow get a really good ATAR (uni entrance rank index thing), but I have no idea what I actually want, or how I'm even going to get it.

UMAT is held nationally.

I think the uni application and selection system is deliberately made confusing and stressful. One of my friend (an aspiring engineer) gets excellent marks but failed to read the fine print about having to complete math methods before applying for the course (he thought he would be able to do a uni course in the first year to make up for it) and only now told he has to go through the TAFE system for 1-2 years before they will even consider accepting him into Uni.

For law in Victoria you kneed an ENTER score of around 98, which in all likelihood I won't get. I need around 95 for medicine (plus pass a 45 minute interview for most unis), and I doubt whether I can get it (I got B+ for my chemistry mid-year results, so that's not a good sign). I'm thinking of selecting one of the engineering courses (achievable ENTER scores, shorter courses than medicine, cheaper, pretty good employment rate and income can be comparable to doctors) but I'm still not sure whether I really want to go down that path.

Section B (?) is ridiculous, though. 'Your sister is rich, lazy and has three kids. You have just gone back to work full-time after 6 months maternity leave. Do you feel jealous or envious?' It's not meant to be a semantics test! I mean, sure, if you know the subtle difference it's fine, but it's so particular and random.

I only know this because the day before the test my whole Maths class was engulfed in attempting to learn empathy. I was helping the guy next to me, who is almost the epitome of why there needs to be a UMAT. He's insanely smart, but lacks people skills.

I'm sure you did fine.

But do you know how you're meant to be good with people? As in, did you manage to give them the answers they wanted?

The university system in Australia makes no sense, I still don't understand it.

It is?

What the hell?

I honestly don't see people skills as being all that important, in most cases they're not.

I have no idea how a thread about who really started WWI ended up in a discussion about Obama and socialism.

People who cheat at Mario Kart Wii Wifi. I mean, how can one gain satisfaction from repeatedly spawning Bullet Bills, Stars, and Blue Shell? It's not like you are proving your superiority at anything other than hacking the game, and meanwhile you're ruining it for everyone else.

Are we still throwing grenades, or did the fight end?

The good thing is that you don't really have to. I just have to submit my preferences to UAC (University Admissions Centre) and wait until I receive an offer.

What the hell?

EXACTLY! It is a ridiculous test. Most Section B questions have 4 options- 1 pretty obviously incorrect, 1 borderline, and 2 synonyms, 1 of which will gain you a mark.

But for a doctor, it's probably a good idea to be able to communicate with people, and express a degree of empathy. IIRC, UMAT was instituted to stop the growth of Asian doctors who can hardly speak English.

I got almost no sleep last night because of poor air conditioning.
