Random SG 01 - The Randomness Begins

Could everyone vote on the settling on resources thing ? I'm for and Optional is against, but that's a pretty big question that we need to, well, settle.

It's hard to say where we will settle before that, and before we move the warrior anyway.

So here's where we stand after 5 turns.

Popped a goody hut and got a map. We have met Alex. He's 10 tiles NW of us.

We were also the first to meet Melbourne and we are 30G richer.

Here's a screen shot of our world.

Yes, we have a lot of jungle, but that will also provide a buffer between us and Alex.

So the big questions:

1. What to build next?
2. What do we research next?
3. What is going to be our SP path?

Oh, and another big question: could someone point out to the dinosaur (me) where we save the game saves these days?

I had to figure out that we don't save pictures on Civ Fanatics anymore.

Interesting... we got both an aggressive neighbor and lots of jungle. Alex is also a pain when it comes to city-states...

So the big questions:

1. What to build next?
2. What do we research next?
3. What is going to be our SP path?

1. I would build an additional scout. Given we don't know the map type, I think it's vital to find out as quickly as possible.

2. I say archery given Alex's appearance

3. I would stick with Liberty/Pyramids so we can slash n burn those jungles efficiently.

Love #1 and #3, but do we go straight for animal husbandry next so we can get the Horseman quickly ? And btw, do we put auto-explore on?

What's your thought process on Animal Husbandry? Does it have anything to do with Alex having CC?

On auto-explore, I like manual control until after I have discovered all City States/Civs, then I typically turn it on for the tedious fog busting. I'm fine either way though.

If we want to defend ourselves properly against the Greeks we need to make sure that we have a large variety of units to fight him with (especially if he rushes we won't be able to stop him with just Archers )

I think we want to play at least 10 turns each. We can play more in the early game.

I agree that we will need more than archers to hold off Alex. Archers are an easy and cheap way to increase our fire power.

What is Alex's best unit? I agree with the CC, but you don't fight CC with horses, you fight CC with spears. We need BW for that. One good thing is that the jungle will slow down CC.

I never go with auto explore.

If we are going with Liberty/Pyramids then we will need to build monument-scout-worker.

For me that's C:\Users\[username]\Documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 5\Saves\single.

Looks like an awful lot of jungle, and in Von Münchhausen IV we also had Alex as our opponent. Ugh, history repeats itself. Alex is not the biggest warmonger, but the AI is good with him, he expands quickly and gets the City States on his side. Trying to remain peaceful with him might be a mistake, but it's difficult to go to war from a jungle start that's poor in production.
Going for Liberty - Pyramids is fine, but it means a peaceful route for the early game. After Pyramids you'll want a second city before building archers, otherwise you'll not be coping with the unit costs.

Auto-explore is not a good idea in an SG, the next player won't get the 'a unit needs orders' message and won't even realise this unit is on the map until it gets attacked by a barb. A scout should run into barb trouble pretty soon, while if you manually move him you might actually take out a barb camp because the resident barb just abandoned it to attack an AI scout.

Auto-explore is pretty bad. Same with automated workers.

The bad news is that this looks a lot like a Pangea. I wouldbuild a Monument nonetheless, the second scout can come later, getting our culture doing is the biggest priority atm.

As far as tech goes, I'd go for Mining. We will want Bronze Working early to cut down jungles and it lets us chop forests to speed up early production. We wouldn't have time to build Archers yet anyway, and Animal Husbandry is only good if we reveal horses in working range of the capital, which is unlikely with this terrain.

I still like the Liberty/Pyramids plan. That's also a point in favor of Mining, since Pyramids are at Masonry.

I know where to find it. I just don't know where to upload it when someone on the team wants to play.

OK, so we looking at mining after pottery. Monument-scout. I will be playing the remainder of the turns this evening. Chime in if you want me to go a different route.

Here. You can attach files to your posts. When you post a reply, look at the 'Additional Options' box below that. 'Manage Attachments' allows you to attach a Civ 5 save, either zipped or unzipped.

Thanks Optional. I'll be playing the last five in the next 90 minutes or so.

Turn 05 – select monument for build
Turn 8 – Jakarta grows. Ensure the governor selected food.
Turn 10 – pottery completes. Select mining. Pop a goody hut for 100G. Find some cocoa to the west.
Turn 13 – water to our southeast. A barb warrior attacks our scout. Hopefully I can keep this guy alive. Monument completes. Go for another scout.
Turn 14 - Scout is redlined. Put him on a hill and hope he can survive another attack.
Turn 15 - Scout is killed. Warrior finds a goody hut.

15 turns feels like a good start. Why don’t we go another 15 turns, then we will each play 10. There should be enough to do to keep from getting bored.

Here is the area around our capital.

I put in three dots for potential city locations. Yellow dot is on the coast and grabs the cocoa. Red dot may challenge Alex but it grabs the sugar. Red dot will grab another cocoa.

Here is the area to the southeast of us, also showing where our scout died.
