Random Thoughts XV: Temere Cogito, Ergo . . .

One of my author friends, Noah Chinn, lives either in or just north of Vancouver (not quite clear on that), and just posted on FB mentioning that he felt it as well. Looks like people all over that general region felt it. Something like 4.something?

Any fracking going on in that region, @Synobun? Or any word of a situation happening in the Pacific?

Two headlines say 4.7 and 5.1. Google says 4.8. Hopefully not a foreshock for something bigger.

Nah, it was a shallow inland quake, which is why it produced so much shaking. Your friend would have felt it a little more; the quake was ~60 km northwest of Vancouver.

First detected as 4.7, then adjusted to 5.1, now back down to 4.8.

I've felt a couple earthquakes since moving to Vancouver, but today's was the first that had the distinctive rolling motion associated with big quakes. Surreal sensation. It really does feel like you're on a boat.
Highest I went through was a 3.8. I missed the boat experience. Still disconcerting. Obviously, an earthquake is more dangerous, but, I had the same sensation then as I did when viewing a recent solar eclipse. The natural order was briefly, and disturbingly, changed so substantially that the presumptions I'd made about its characteristics had to be suspended. At least I knew when the eclipse would end. The earthquake was much more anxiogenic.

My friend just posted this. He's unimpressed with KXLY, and so am I (that's the ABC channel I get from Spokane, when I bother watching TV). They should know the difference between Vancouver and Seattle!

Assuming it's using "above" to mean "North" it is technically correct, the best kind of correct, but also very non-specific and misleading

It's ridiculous for two reasons:

1. Did the earthquake occur in mid-air over Seattle?

2. KXLY serves the south-eastern portion of BC, as well as most of Alberta. This is being geographically obtuse. They have no excuse for not knowing about where Vancouver is.

U.S. defaultism.

Yep. Next time either Tyler or Ryan (couple of American YT guys I watch, who react to videos about Canada/American issues), I've got new material.

YouTube Reccomendation alg has been pushing this goshdarn mothertruckin video for 2 fudging days and arsoles aren't going to get me to click frigg off you dripsnits

So, click the "Not interested in this video" or "don't recommend this channel".

Maybe he is browsing without an account. Then there is no way to get away from recommendations - which supposedly are just all created from videos you watched in that session.

Almost more a Rant than a Thought.

Dammit, now I'm trying to figure out how long it would have taken to learn the piano.

Not as long as learning an instrument without built-in measurement of distances between the tones - but still very unlikely when one is no longer very young.

The premise is infinite inescapable time and limited scope of entertainment.

Yarrr

10,000 hours--is the rule of thumb.

I don't remember from the film how good a pianist he makes himself. 10,000 is for mastery.

Well, he has to get the absolute perfect iteration of many things. 10k doesn't seem a bad starting point!

One random internet source said that he was stuck in a loop for 34 years. 10.5 years of which was learning piano.

According to Simon Gallagher from WhatCulture, Phil relives the same day approximately 12,400 times in Groundhog Day. To get to this number, Gallagher began counting each separate day shown onscreen in Groundhog Day, which adds up to 38 days total. Next, he calculated all the different events that Phil mentions having happened, like his six offscreen suicide attempts (factoring in an additional 20 days to contemplate), assuming they all took place on separate days. Phil also says he saw the same film 100 times, presumably on different days, which brings the running total up to 164 days.

Gallagher also estimated how many days it would've taken Phil to learn and memorize the vast information about Rita (Andie MacDowell) and the diner folks' backstories and familiarize himself with certain places around town. Adding the two days Phil spent memorizing the answers to Jeopardy!, the total comes to around 272 days. Gallagher also gave Phil six weeks, or 42 days, to memorize the precise actions of the people driving the security van he eventually robs, and 26 days to learn how to fix Felix's back, which comes to 340 days.

Phil also indirectly reveals it took him six months to learn to card throw, which tacks on an additional 180 days, give or take, for a total of 520 days. For the skills that would take years to learn, Gallagher applied the theory that it takes 10,000 hours to master any one subject. He adjusted the numbers accordingly based on Phil's habits, assuming he focused on one skill at a time and none of the days overlapped:

10 years to become an expert at ice sculpting = 3650 days
10.5 years to master playing piano = 3833 days
12 years to become fluent in French = 4380 days

Learning these three skills took up the bulk of Phil's time, bringing the total to 12,383 days. Finally, Gallagher added 12 days for Phil to successfully accomplish his many selfless gestures, such as saving the child falling out of a tree and giving Buster the Heimlich maneuver. All in all, this comes to 12,395 days, which, rounded up to 12,400 days even, equals 33 years and 355 days, just 10 days short of 34 years. Of course, this total is only an estimate based heavily on assumption, but it seems like a pretty plausible (and horrifying) amount of time.

I HAVEN'T EVEN SEEN THE MOVIE

(I haven't watched it).
You should. It's good!
