Rat28 - AWE OBC - Iroquois

If things are grim without iron, we might even be forced to get a spear army to protect the MW army.

Let's hope we have saltpeter at least

Just from what I am seeing, the only AI that has Iron for sure is the Maya, though I thought somewhere we had a Korean sword. I'm only seeing ironless units from Sumeria, Korea and Egypt, so Iron may be vanishingly rare on this entire continent. I'm wishing I had thought of a spear army sooner, as I used our stockpiled leader for a third MW army. The east is getting a bit dicey with Maya MDI's and pikes guarding them. So to get a spear army now, we need 4 more towns. I can only be confident of grabbing one this turn-set, maybe two(the second is on tundra, thus slow growing) Good news is we are able to build 2 turn MW's in Salamanca, and 3 turns at Inch'on. Bad news, the Maya are building Knight's Templar, and I have little doubt they will get it. Just hope they don't get horses, or we're in deep. I should finish my set tonight.

I have finished my turn-set, taking Byblos and Man'po, maybe next turn we get Taejon. We have 3 MW armies now, but no leaders. I only lost 2-3 mounties so we now have a bunch. A braver player could possibly go offensive soon, the AI is down to sending dribs and drabs each turn. The galley has went past Korea and is now in Maya territory. Anyway, here is my turn-log:

Here is what our galley has found so far:

The save:

The Roster:
TheRat
el_filet
TheOverseer
Greebley - up

things seem to look better. I can't look at the save, would be interesting to see our new holdings. We need to expand south for the iron, maybe we take the Korean flank as it seems easier to do.

Preturn: Hit enter prematurely before I could check out much. Fortunately things were in order.

IBT: A longbow attacks our MW near Taejon and loses.

560 AD: Units near Taejon are all injured so they retreat.
Decide to turn on science. We are more likely not to get Gunpowder from the GLib with Edu known.
I may try to take the Cities back we owned before (Zabalam and Kish).

IBT: Chichen Itza completes Sun Tzu. This is great as it is on our Continent.

570 AD: Several Mayan units are on their way including MDI. Start prepping for them.
Capture Zabalam.

580 AD: Move on Kish.

590 AD: Kish is Captured (Sumerian cities are worth good gold - 260 for Kish).
Kill 3 MDI (with Army) and 3 Longbow near Hyangsan.

600 AD: Finally healed and moving in on Taejon. We Capture it.

IBT: Lose a Spear on a Mountain but kill 2 Longbow first.

610 AD: Armies Healing. See Mayan Iron way to the South.

620 AD: More Healing.

IBT: Yup we get Education. We are still 8 turns from Gunpowder.

630 AD: Move forward and find Ur which has Leo, Pyramids, Hanging Garden. Our armies are carefully staying on mountains to avoid attack by strength 4 units.
Hyangsan not being attacked by 4-6 units for the first time in a while (in fact no units right now).

IBT: Korea finishes Knights Templar.

640 AD: Finally able to start shrinking Kish and Zabalam by starving them

650 AD: Attack Ur and kill 3 Vet Enkidu, but take a lot of damage. One goes down to 2 hp from over 10 or more. The other should be able to keep it alive because they are still on the mountain (so as if defense 2).

Notes:
With the Mayans attacking our Korean side, expansion toward Sumeria was easiest. Also they are worth taking out.
Been building Libraries to get our Science up. It was pretty poor. Sumer already has Gunpowder and Astronomy over us.
Capturing Ur would really help us with the Pyramids, Hanging Gardens, and Leo's. It will be hard to starve down though.
Sumer has about 7 Cities left if we can grab them we can ignore flips.
Tried to leader fish and got a decent number of Elite victories, but no leader yet.
Was late so no final MM - check on it and city happiness.

Rat28_AD650.jpg

great progress!!! If we can take out Sumer before the flips get too rampant, it would be great. Hope we can continue our steam rolling.
All the great wonders seem to be on our continent as well, this will help us a lot.

got it

great, we're finally on the offensive and progressing well there. with the steady stream of units from korea and mayans sumer is the way to go. attacking a rich tech leader can't be bad too.

Once we feel we have sufficient units for our immediate needs....

I wanted to mention that in this game, that culture will help us. We have to keep cities so less flips is good. Temples cost us some more shields than an MP, but are going to be worth it in our cities that can build them quickly, the culture will allow us to keep cities without flips and is worth the 40 extra shields over a Spear.

It may also be worth building the heroic epic. Pentagon and another Army would have priority over the HE and it is not too expensive.

I really hope we have Saltpeter and/or there is an Iron nearer than the one at the bottom of the continent or its going to get rough.

Note that Ur may get Muskets in it soon with the AI having Gunpowder. I hope not as the Enkidu were hard enough to kill. Though there is the advantage that the AI cannot replace Muskets as quickly.

Pre-Turn
change Hyangsan to a library for that much needed culture expansion
rush Library in Agade, so we can grow it faster
move eastern army west, we need that support to take out Sumer

1. 660AD
gunpowder drops by 1 turn as we meet huge Portugal with 17 cities
they have the GL, so they might not be on our continent

armies next to Ur heal
defeat Lb next to Kish and cover the MW with the arriving army

IT we ge gunpowder and go for chemistry

2.670AD
we do have saltpeter, though not connected yet
be careful, healed army at Ur kills two LB, cover with 3rd army

take out 2 LB's next to Kish

3. 680AD
LB left Ur, it looks ripe for taking
though we have 3 red armies now, we have conquered Ur for 374gold
defeat 3 LB's around Kish with our increased mobility

kill Korean spear in the east

4. 690AD
saltpeter is connected now
upgrade 2 spears to muskets, one of them is already in Ur
defeat LB next to Ur, while armies heal

in the east, 2 Mayan units are slain

IT we defeat LB on defense, a Korean templar coms into sight

5. 700AD
take Akshak for 275gold

situation is tricky as there are other units around
send healthy army west to recon the area

6. 710AD
have a hard time to take out an intruder pike as we have no artillery around
manage to take Lagash for 450gold, o hold all the land will be rally tricky

upgrade 2 spears

7. 720AD/B]
heal and consolidate, more units will come from th south for sure
killing Korean trickle in the east does not give MGL's as well
move on to

IT Lagash (that is empty deposes us and LB's attack our 7hp army on a mountain, luckily it retreats

8. 730AD
take Erech for 399gold

IT defeat Lb with musket on defense :)

9. 740AD
defeat leftover pike in our land
defeat LB and EW near our cities

IT Kish deposes us

10. 750AD
it costs us a MW, but take Kish back for 262 gold
take back Lagash for 280gold

since PP is around,we suddenly have contact with America
they are big with 18 cities, declare war on them

rat28750qt2.jpg

what saved us during my set is the fact that Sumer have no saltpeter. Nobody showed up with fast units either. That enabled me to leave the new cities empty. Hopefully we can manage to take those 3 left western Sumer cities and then take hem out completely so we are much less vulnerable.

We simply have to get to Military tradition fast. I hope we gt some MGL's for HE and the pentagon, but I had no such luck. Beware that this is a real tough game, every move is important here.

Also, be careful if Ur flips, cities might riot as we have the Hanging Gardens from there.

Excellent turn ThERat.

There are 4 Sumer cities left. The three on the peninsula and one more just south of us.

BTW, we are somehow at peace with America. Probably wasn't saved after declaring war, so the next player will have to do so again.

Again, remember to be careful with the Armies. A Longbow can kill one. They are SOO fragile and I see no mountains, but perhaps the hill would be good enough with more than one army (I think it would be). Or use a Musket for defense.

BTW, we are somehow at peace with America.
Well, after I saved I saw that we have contact with America and declared, but most likely forgot to save again.

I think besides mountain tops, jungle is also save for a healthy army. That's how I went west with an army and it was NOT attacked by LB's.

What puzzles me is the fact, that Sumer have iron and horses when I contact them, but they still built only LB's and EW. Is that something like prefered units over pikes and swords? Or horses?
It would be great, if we can go after Korea once we have taken care of Sumer as Seoul has KT.

You guys move fast! I'm glad to see so much progress, it seemed my recent turns were "hunker down and survive" type turns. Apparently the iron shortage and Sumeria's odd behavior is somewhat beneficial to us in the west, I'd much rather fight LB's than Maces, and having no pikemen there is also nice. We will probably need Cavalry for the Maya, since they do have iron and will most likely have muskets and pikes, and those are more than a match for MW's.

i got it

will concentrate on eliminating the sumerians. maybe set up a defensive line using the gem mountain in front of the flatlands.

Turn 0 (750 AD):
declare on abe

IBT:
koreans move several lb in front of akshak

Turn 1:
there's no way to hold akshak, will abandon it.
1 hp spear holds off 4 hp mw, that won't help stabilize things there

Turn 2:
situation solved for the most part, some stray units still around.
science down to 80%

Turn 3:
set up armies for new sumerian capital
science to 70% and switch two scientiest to taxmen

IBT:
rufuse to talk to cleo
chemistry->metallurgy on 90%

Turn 4:
capture sumer

Turn 5:
ew in bad-tibira brings 13 hp army down to 2 :(
but the 2nd captures it. going to 3 hp, but killing two ew

IBT: cleo lands spear near our workers
americans start sistine

Turn 6:
get the spear
send armies back to heal
lose eMW agains 1 hp spear on desert

Turn 7:
capture umma

Turn 8:
setup for final sumer city

IBT:
lagash disposes

Turn 9:
too bad, sumerians will live another turn. or more, if now the flipping starts...
capture isin

Turn 10:
recapture lagash for >2k gold and destroy sumerians
rush rax in isin

Notes:
continued on culture builts, but we need a lot more if we're going to keep conquered cities in the future.
started several warriors for mp duty/quell resistance
korea or egypt? our armies are near giza, which is still defended by spear. i think korea is the better target, but moving our troops seems like a waste of time to me. especially with iron being on the south end of our continent.
surprisingly few units on both fronts. got the feeling they're up to something...

got the feeling they're up to something...

Like building a SOD? I think we need to direct new built troops toward Korea and use what is in Sumerian lands to defend that area and maybe chip away at Egypt, using only healthy armies to take a town every 3-4 turns. I saw the screenie, I didn't see in the reports that we got so much money from the Sumerians, but I like our bank balance. I downloaded the save and can begin play this evening, so any thoughts on how I play my turns would be greatly welcome.

Excellent effort in taking out Sumer. :goodjob:

Remember that Korea has KT in Seoul. It would make sense to grab that while it is still active. With MT coming in soon, we can build cavalry. This should be enough to get us the iron we need for railroads eventually.

I would send the main force after Korea and defend against Egypt as suggested. I like the idea to use some cheap warriors to quell resistance.

Sorry it took so long to get this finished, I was actually done last night but didn't have time to post the results. It was a pretty good turn-set, no setbacks and some good stuff happened, including a leader! Took Pusan, Hieraconopolis, and Giza, only losing a couple units overall. We are 2 turns away from cavalry, and there are a few pre-builds going (universities) to get at least a few relatively quickly. Here is my turn-log:
Spoiler :

Pre-Flight: CivAssist 2, Word running. Open the save, look things over. Notice a Mayan pike lurking near Hyangsan, red-line with trebuchets, kill with eMW. Far south do same thing with an LB.

IBT: No attacks, a few units appear in the south. Much boat movement. A few resistors quelled. Add towers and landscaping to palace.

Turn 1, 860 AD: No one in position to attack. Move new units toward Korea.
Build a galley to explore inland sea.

IBT: Mayans land an MDI beside Sumer, Egypt lands a settler pair on ruins of a former Sumerian town. Korean Crusader loses to fortified Musket.

Turn 2, 870 AD: Ping and kill intruding MDI.

IBT: 2 MDI’s step up to Isin. Korea sending a spear or 2, nothing worrisome. Hieraconopolis settled near Ur. Now to let it grow to pop 2.

Turn 3, 880 AD: Trebs go 3 for 7, Kill the MDIs with MWs.

IBT: 2 Korean spears step up to Hyangsan. Korean and Egyptian LBs mill around near Isin. Metallurgy arrives, next is Military Tradition.

Turn 4, 890 AD: Lose an MW on a 2hp spear, next MW wins and promotes, eMW wins clean vs redlined spear. Begin moving a modest invasion forces toward Korea.

IBT: Salamanca and Agade riot due to loss of gems (Hieraconopolis blocking road), I’m working to reconnect them. 2 Egyptian, 2 Korean LBs move into reach at Isin.

Turn 5, 900 AD: Kill all 4 LBs. Exploration reveals 2 unconnected Dyes in Korean jungle. How stupid are they?

IBT: Korean Crusader wipes out Musket on top of the stack moving toward Pusan, losing 1 hp. Another Korean LB and Crusader in reach at Isin. Inch’on riots.

Turn 6, 910 AD: Bombard then kill redlined crusaders and LB. LB kill nets a leader! I mull it over, decide to make an army for our first Cavalry army. Stack moves into position at Pusan.

IBT: Our galley survives vs a Korean caravel. Mini stack of 2 Spears and 2 LB’s forms near Pusan, this delays the attack there.

Turn 7, 920 BC: Wipe out mini stack, losing too many hps on 3 MWs for the attack next turn. Should still have enough.

IBT: Watch 3 Carracks drop a single knight off at Sumer. 2 Mayan MDI move into reach of our trebuchets.

Turn 8, 930 AD: Bombardment reveals 2 spears and 1 LB at Pusan, taken with no losses. Kill 2 Mayan MDIs near Isin. I see an Egyptian Musket, I decide to go after Giza, 1st and 2nd Mounties will be covered by 2 Muskets.

IBT: Ur attracts 2 LBs one Portuguese, one Egyptian. Egyptian Musket steps up to Isin, another Mayan MDI in reach. Korean units turn back home, will they have one to go back to?

Turn 9, 940 AD: Kill all intruders. Move bombardment stack to Cheju.

IBT: Crusader shows up, delaying attack on Cheju till next turn. Hieraconopolis has grown

Turn 10, 950 AD: Redlined crusader defeats one MW, another MW takes him out.
3rd Mounties goes yellow at Hieraconopolis defeating one rSpear, lone MW takes the other clean and Cleoburg(new easier name) is taken. 1st Mounties take out 2 regular spears at Giza and takes the town, 1 trebuchet captured.
