RB15: Taking The Long View

Great game :goodjob:
I have a question though, if you all win by histogram, will you be the first civ 4 sg team to win by that method?

I haven't been a serious enough follower of all the other hundreds of SGs going on here to know whether Histographic has been done in any, actually. It would be quite a cool statistic to hold if it hasn't, though I'm still holding out faint hope for Domination, and Diplomatic is on the cards if we want it.

This SG is going for one, they're currently in 2020 so it's going to be a race :)

T0 - 2035AD

Domination is probably out, we have around 45% of the land so we need to increase by another 20%. (and we won't have much time to increase our cultural border in Germany with 10t revolt in captured cities).

Found Dallas in East Germany (thanks to Eiffel tower, our first free specialists can be artists and give and cultural expansion in 2t).

Since we restart research (a bit) for the "Futur Tech" Style point, I use the last great Engineer to hurry Oxford in Portland.

T1 - 2036AD
Single currency is an unanimous vote.
Found 3 cities in germany (south)
WW is already ugly and Germany will last probably until the end, so cheap Police Cars (chariot) are ordered en masse to fight the inside trouble makers.
A lot of our troops in Germany are still healing from the hard campaign Garath forced them to fight :)

T2 - 2037AD
Alex completed an SS casing.

At Magdeburg (on hill, defended by 2 MechInf including a CD3).
Lose a suicidal artillery doing virtualy nothing.
1st Modern Armor wons despite 25% odds.
2nd MA gets 85% and captures.

T3 - 2038AD
Hatshepsut has completed sS Docking Bay.

We can now see fighter around Cologne.

T4 - 2039AD
Decide to push no decision in the UN as nothing is in our interest (we need Alex to win with diplo, but since we could have that before, no reason to do it now).

T5 - 2040AD
Troy finally join our empire.

Duisburg (3 MechInf CD2 + 1 Sam), reduce defence from 60% to 39% and rush the assault.
The CR3 armors have 70%, and 2 out of 3 won. Our elite MA finishes the job without scratch and captures.
(forget to get a picture).

T7 - 2042AD
At Hamburg, Fred lost his mind and suicide 2 MechInfagainst our MA, but keeps is artilleries inside...
With 2 artilleries, reduce def to 40% (from 80%)
There are now inside only 1 MechInf, 1 Panzer, 1 Sam and 6 artilleries.
1 MA wins at 80% against the MechInf, another loses at 80% against the panzer.
After it is 99% so clean every things.

WW seems to have decreased a bit ?

T8 - 2043AD
Vote again, decide for free religion (we will lose the 2XP but will gain a few happyness in some cities)

WW goes back to where it was, seems strange.

Decide to rush/blitz the first 3 MA against Cologne as there are only 3 defenders (1 MechInf with CD2 and 1 with random promotions + 1 Sam)
1st MA wins at 30%.
2nd wins at 36%
3rd wins at 75%
Cologne captured and Fred is now in US jails.

Our next competitor for Space is Hatshepsut who still needs Engine, Cockpit and Chamber.

The egyptian navy is quite impressive (Military advisor says wa can see 12 destroyers and 8 battleship) and I can't imagine to "Pearl Harbor" it the same turn as we declare (and any captured cities stil will be revolting in 7t)

We probably should just wait to win on time.

I will stop there, all units are moved.

Most of our troops in Germany are now in Berlin, some healing.

Next turn, all the WW will go away, so there is a major relifting of all the cities to do (especially with Free Religion coming as well).
Before hitting enter, canceling the few Chariot in production could be done as well.

Have fun, but more probably it could be just hitting enter 7 times.

Finding time for this is proving shockingly difficult, given that if I don't faff around doing things like declaring war on Hatty the game shouldn't take long at all. I hate revision.

I'll get there, though I can't guarantee when it'll be.

Garath

I think I'll finish this one with Score. While I might take out a few of Hatty's cities in the last couple of turns, I won't be making a concerted effort to do so, since I don't want to run into her Navy:

I want to get Future Tech before I finish, and since that will leave us in 2048, Score is clearly the sensible way to go.

Thusly I shan't be micromanaging from this point, really, since we *would* win if I simply pressed ENTER 7 times. I won't quite be doing that, but still...

ENTER

I happily pick the recommended choices for most building projects, and note that the time to Future Tech has dropped to 3 turns with the end of the WW from Freddy.

I happily sleep most of our troops and ships, since I don't anticipate needing them and can still find them if I do happen to.

ENTER

Having slept most of the units the last time, little is left to do this time. Merely some setting up to take as many Egyptian cities as possible on the last turn of the game, really. Oh, and those two Greek cities on our second continent. I intend for us to fully control four of the six continents at the actual victory, if I can get at the extreme southern Egyptian city. I think that depends on whether the game ends at the beginning or the end of 2050, which I don't yet know. That's the fastestI can get transports and troops down there, though.

ENTER

By now the majority of cities are also on building projects they will not complete before the game ends, so there's even less to do. The cities that I captured at the end of my last turnset finally come out of resistance, far too late to actually do anything with.

ENTER

:borg: [party] :band:

Just goes to show what you can do with properly focused research, eh? :D

Nothin' else happenin'

ENTER

ENTER

Due to an earlier miscount, it turns out that the Transports for Edfu *have* arrived in time after all. Which is good, since the first thing I do on this turn is save it, then force end the turn to find out whether I get to play it or not. I do not, so I reopen the save to make the most of the last turn of the game...

And that's a wrap, folks. Two-thirds again the score of our nearest rival. Just shows the awesome power of Modern warfare, even with the disadvantaged start we got!

Final save at http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads11/RB15 2049AD.Civ4savedgame or something in that vicinity.

Just hit enter and ignore all the attacks they make on us, I'd forgotten that IT still got played out. We can't lose any cities.

Someone else can do a replay retrospective if they like, I'm out of time.

Garath

That was quite an exciting game. I was really not sure we had a chance when we had to assault riflemen with 'amphibious' cannon. or when our cities went from size 20 to size 8 in a couple of turns thanks to WW.

Now the real question is : Was the game easier because of (almost) everyone in its own island or would the same rules on continent/pangea be doable (we missed the first attacks opportunities by being alone, but later our navy was almost the only thing that was at the same level and able to protect us).

Jabah

Experience of having started a game with basically the same settings (except I forgot No Tech Trading and am Cyrus not Washington, and so the AIs are further ahead) on Pangaea suggests that the ability to attack early, even held back by the lack of Courthouses, makes that version massively easier. I've already got more than twice the empire of anybody else well before the stage we were first able to attack at all in this game, and I'm gearing up for more Cannon/Grenadier against Riflemen in a few turns.

Doing it on *Monarch* on Pangaea would be seriously tricky again, though probably doable with enough razing (rather than capturing) early war. The lack of Animal Husbandry and Archery still really kill though. I'll probably try it some day, but not just yet.

Thanks to the both of you for making it such a good game, and for not giving up for more than a couple of turns at a time. What a rollercoaster ride it was! :goodjob: :crazyeye:

Garath

I want to congratulate you guys on sticking it out and playing this one through to a glorious finish! It most definitely did not look good during your long years of isolation. Given the hog-tied variant you were playing, a Time victory absolutely redounds to your credit. Congratulations.

(I bet that's the last time you pick the "Random" number of continents setting for Custom Continents, eh? :crazyeye:  )

Good game Garath/Jabah :goodjob: . It looked tough there for a bit.

I have a feeling that a Monarch/Pangea setting on this same variant would be about equivalent in difficulty to what we just finished.

No Animal Husbandry/Archery really hurts in the begining. I mean New York has a grassland cow with a cottage on it for the whole game :crazyeye: . Sort of odd though that the pastures of Mao et al worked for us once we took them though:crazyeye: .

I really enjoyed that variant Garath, thanks
