RBTS5 - Multiple Personality Disorder

Looked at the latest save, here are a few thoughts.

We got another GG. I ponder a possible SoL buildplace, but apart from Rome our cities are low on production and Rome would mean, well 2 free specialists, yay. So I postpone that decision to the next player if at all. (We can´t wait 35 turns for completion with my turnset and whipping is out.

My reaction: what?! We've got a huge continent here with NINETEEN cities on it - Statue of Liberty is humongous for our civ! I'm having trouble believing that we sat on Democracy tech for 5 turns - with a Great Engineer! - without so much as even starting the wonder. That was a weedy move, I'm afraid. :smoke:

I check our cities and see that the one with the best shield total is actually... Oporto, due to all those water tiles with Moai wonder. Heh. We can build the Statue in a mere 13 turns if we use the Great Engineer and run the appropriate specialists (Engineers and Priests). So... why aren't we doing this?! That has to be a higher priority than a colosseum that we don't need.

- I really don't see why we researched Communism, followed by The Corporation. At this stage of the game, anything other than beelining for the uber Assembly Line tech (factories + power plants + infantry!) has me scratching my head. A free Great Spy is nice, but not as nice as factories in every city.

- Similarly, there's some tech trades out there just waiting to be made. Backwards Shaka has Chemistry tech, which is a prerequisite for Steam Power. We can send him some stuff as far back as Music and Paper (!) for a very important tech needed to move forward on the tree. Thanks to Espionage, we can also see that similarly backwards Ramesses will research The Corporation in 3 turns, after which we should be able to trade for it with him. So why research it ourselves? I don't get it. I would personally trade for Chemistry, then beeline Steam Power -> Assembly Line. You guys just don't work the trading machine hard enough. That's one thing Civ3 vets know how to do in their sleep.

- Here's the BIG question: what victory type are we pursuing? We can go one of two ways:

1) Spaceship - pack everything in, concentrate on infrastructure, research and trade our way to victory. Easy and uneventful.
2) Domination - switch to a military footing, take it to the AIs. The southwestern island would likely give us enough land for victory, so we'd probably be taking on Ramesses, Shaka, and Darius in succession. Harder but more excitement.

We really need to figure this out ASAP, so I'd like to hear opinions from the team. Currently, our civ is on 100% infrastructure (even at our Heroic Epic city, which does NOT need a market!) which would need to change if we go for a military victory. I'm leaning towards Domination, if only because Space wins are boring and routine, but I'm OK with whatever everyone decides. The sooner we decide our course of action, the better.

With Archduke moving to lurker status, we also have a roster spot opening up. If someone would like to join for the tail end of this game, that's fine with me. :) I would ask that we limit this to experienced players though, at least one solo win on Emperor difficulty. The current turn order looks like this:

Sullla
Dantski
Open (thanks for the game, Archduke!)
Swiss Pauli <<< UP NOW
sunrise089 <<< on deck

I think that's all I have to say. Whew! Bit of a mouthful. :D

Sulla,

I'd like to jump in!

edit: whoops, nevermind!

Did someone mention an open slot for a late-game intercontinental domination attempt?

*raises hand*

sooooo beats darrelljs in a photo finish! 7 minutes too fast. I'll keep a spot in mind for darrell in my next succession game. (Oh yes, already have the next variant planned. And it's gonna be a doozy. :mischief: )

I believe Swiss Pauli is OOP till saturday

Thanks for the head's up! Let's try swapping sunrise and Swiss Pauli then, so sunrise can play his turn tonight, then Swiss can get it on Saturday. :)

Well, given this ...
Ok, I'll try to get turns up tonight before I go to sleep.
... then this ...

... seems like a fairly good assumption on Sullla's part. :D:D

Bah, don't try and feed me lies. I know firsthand the life of a graduate student, and there are very few sexy parties to attend! ;)

And now I made myself sad... :(

hah that would count me out

Well, I'm back, but it seems like sunrise headed off without playing his turns. I won't play tonight anyway, so I'll pick it up tomorrow just in case he does post his turns. However, ifsunrise is already OOP then we're missing a player. I'd vote to throw sooooo in at the deep-end (metaphorically speaking) and have him play the pre-switch set, but that would be Sullla's call...

...as to victory type: I think we owe our current good position to some favourable fortune in the switches (Toku losing Construction/switching to Currency then losing Feudalism) so we should carry on in the aggressive mindset and onto a continental showdown with scary Shaka and his huge (outdated) stacks.

I concur with everything you said. Let's wait and see if sunrise manages to post tonight; if not, we'll have Swiss Pauli take over on Saturday, and then stick sooooo in the hole at the end of the rotation, to make sure we get a full 50 turns for our German civ.

Picked up the save and cancelled all worker automations: there was quite a bit of over-workshopping going on, even at the expense of lumbermills :smoke: Start SoL in Oporto, but save the GE for a while as the damned city grows like a weed, and we can get 30 extra hammers per pop without risking its completion. Merge the GS in Madrid. Get Chemistry from Shaka for Nat and DivR. Switch research to Steam Power. The Khmer declare war on Peter on the inter-turn, and I decline Ramy's invite to cancel with Khmer. Shaka would DoW Khmer a few turns later (I assume a bribe from sneaky Pete).

Steam Power complete on T365, but most levees will have to wait until after the switch (we're in CS, not slavery). Get the volcano event the same turn (Barca/Tokyo). Rushed most of SoL on turn 8, and it will complete next turn. Completed Steel for Cannon and Ironworks. Traded in Corp from Pete for Democracy on my last turn.

Most cities are set to complete their builds by turn 279 at the latest, but some of the new ones will fail due to lack of hammers. Our army is down south (see sign) with a couple of Galleons at hand to ship them around. Two more galleons at Barca, the closest port to Kwadukuza that can churn out 2-turn Rifles.

No pics as not much of interest happened: we did get a Prophet from Rome, who should fire a GA once we've made the civ switch and then it's :hammer: time for Ramesses.

This is a very interesting variation, and has been a fun read. It does seem to be a bit overpowered for the SG team though, since you're the only one who gets to double up on things like lighthouses and trading posts, and the AI is undoubtedly wasting a lot of production when you reset your leader and civ.

With all of those advantages, bringing sooooo off the bench for late game domination is really like killing flies with a howitzer!

@sooooo - you're up, good Monsieur :p

OK, I've got it for tonight. Looks like I am last before our personality changes, so I will have to be careful. Not much to do techwise since Assembly Line is due in 8. We will get a GP in Madrid (58% chance of scientist) - any opinions on what to do with him? I'm thinking save him for the next set where Sullla can use him for a golden age (I'm assuming GAs get cancelled when we switch personality). We also have a prophet - should he build the Islam shrine or are we saving him for a GA too?

And can we convert to christianity? Staying free religion gives off the impression that we are scared about what those other "civs" think of us which can't be the case. Actually maybe we should wait until our personality changes so if we get a spiritual civ or set off a golden age we don't have anarchy from switching religion and changing civics to theology (:hammer:).

Right then, at the end of the roster is a little tough since I'm limited by my build options. I tried to build things military oriented, like barracks, drydocks and cannons.

I see we missed the boat in getting assembly plants while we are germans. 8 turns to assembly line would have given us time to whip in a few of them, but seeing as revolting to slavery takes 2 turns of anarchy we can't do it without wasting a golden age. But I think Sullla commented about this earlier so I won't do the same.

I got a request from Surya to declare on Shaka (no thanks) and a request from Peter to cancel deals with the Khmer. Both were rejected. After assembly line completed we just finished off Fascism in time to complete the tech and nab the free great general before our personality changes.

Some of the builds were a little random at the end to fit some production in - I build a few spies since they seemed to be useful 2-turn builds for some cities.

I also turned off some auto-citizen buttons. I know Swiss Pauli likes them but they annoy me a bit. They keep hiring spy specialists!

We got the statue of liberty.

And our GP from Madrid was an engineer.

I did not build the islamic shrine with the priest, personally I think he'd be better off used for a golden age in the next turnset while we build factories.

All the inter-AI wars all ended.

I think we should use our engineer to build Wall Street in Madrid (need 3 more banks for this though) and our general to build a military academy. Recommend Sullla gets us the quickest GP he can, sets of a golden age with it with the priest, revolts to theocracy, nationhood and christianity.

Then Napoleon fell off his horse, bumping his head quite badly. When he woke up he felt strangely different ...

Nicely played! :goodjob: But we won't even need two Great People to trigger a Golden Age, only a single one after the civ swap (since that's another thing that resets). I'll grab the save and see what I can do.

Also... 700+ beakers/turn at 0% science? :D
