RBW3 - Mehmed the Unwise

Good setup Atlas. I have got it, but will need 24-48 hours to play and report.

My apology for delay guys, ill hopefully play this tonight.

Ok guys, either give me a swap or 24 more hours. Sorry about this. TheRat if you want to play before me go ahead.

15 turns played guys. Ok, I noticed that my report got screwed up. Apparently, like 5 paragraphs magically disappeared and I had to rewrite them, which was annoying.. Since I spent like 1 hour playing the turns and then another 20 minutes writing the first report. So anyways, the report might be messed up at certain spots..

Well, I have always stuck to the 70% rule in CIV4. In other words, if we have 70% of the AI's army in demographics, we can guarantee ourselves a victory. At the start of my turnset, we had around 55%, but Isabella inbetween us and Stalin to no risk for us in our Core. I started off by literally micromanaging every city and whipping/drafting as many units as I could. Next I switched research from Printing Press to Chemistry and put 100% slider. Also pull off a few important trade deals on first turn..

Civ4ScreenShot0000.jpg

Our initial offensive army was set up nicely by Atlas, but I decided to wait a couple of turns for more jannisaries to arrive. I was afraid of our army being shred to pieces by stalin's more advanced and certainly more numerous units. Stalin captured Barcelona on turn 2. Its pretty obvious who was winning between Stalin and Isabella. I sent a scout over to check what Stalin's offensive stack looked like.

Civ4ScreenShot0003.jpg

ALOT of knights. I immedietely started emphasizing Pikeman in alot of our cities. Before declaring, I made another important deal with Stalin.

Civ4ScreenShot0007.jpg

Its better to take his gold so he cannot get those cheap upgrades to his units. Anyways, I was basically ready to declare in 1304. With my whipping and drafting, our power had become atleast respectable compared with Stalin, but we were still clearly outmatches.

Civ4ScreenShot0009.jpg

I declared war in 1304.After moving our stack towards Novgorad, I notice Stalin's defense in Novgorad was pathetic. His offensive is certainly impressive, but 4 units in one of his main core cities.. sigh

Civ4ScreenShot0016.jpg

A few turns later, Stalin shows up witha stack near Madrid. Uh Oh? Not really. I was actually hoping Stalin would attack Madrid ASAP. My plan was to send in a couple of strong defensive units and wear down Stalin';s defenses, but I was NOT going to prevent him from taking Madrid. Why? Well, Simple, because we want Madrid, and we will take it from Stalin

Civ4ScreenShot0019.jpg

I could have easily taken novgorad on the first turn, but decided to try to draw in some of Stalin's other troops and kill them in the process. Unfortunately he wasnt being stupid, so by 1340 I was forced to take novgorad. We lost 2 units.

Civ4ScreenShot0024.jpg

On the offensive though, Stalin was being a idiot. Check this out, he lets his 0.5 strentgh warlord out in the open... :smoke:

Civ4ScreenShot0025.jpg

While this was going on, In novgorad I was getting absolutely harrased by what seemed like an unlimited number of Trebechuts and Catupults. Even though I was killing 2 of Stalin's units for every 1 he killed, the trebechuts were really hurting us, especially because of collateral damage. Nonetheless, Novgorad was a huge pickup. We took away one of Stalin's main cities and alot of his GNP(Colussus) while adding to our own GNP. :goodjob:

By 1358, Madrid was in Dire Straights, I probably should have sent more than 3 units to wear down Stalin's offense, but I thought Isabella would help a little.. guess not. She had like 3-4 longbows in her backline cities, and like 5 in Madrid, which was her capital.. sigh. I retreat our 1 unit from Madrid and let Stalin capture it..

Civ4ScreenShot0030.jpg

I had continued building alot of Pikeman/Jannisaries all over the place. I also upgraded 3 of our main city raider Maceman to grenadiars. On my last turn, Taj Mahal is built

Civ4ScreenShot0034.jpg

So here is the situation, TheRat has 10 Golden Age turns to work with. I played my 15 turns extremely safe, because I wanted to put a dent in Stalin's power. I think we should now empty out Novgorad with our offensive stack and go after Madrid(Which is defended by alot of knights). We can then go after St.Pete and Barcelona, probably making peace around that point and regrouping. Here is the power graph now.

Civ4ScreenShot0036.jpg

Ill let TheRat decide which units to use to go after Madrid, although I suggest leaving 1 medic in Novgorad, theres no guarantee we wont see more catupults and trebechuts from Stalin. Another thing, some cities are eligible for drafting, but its not that good to do it now, because we are in Golden Age. Once again, ill let TheRat decide. Last thing, we have some units fortified in Seville

good thing I waited, cos you put up a great turnset...sounds like war, that's fun...let's see whether I can take all those cities as wished

the tale of a typical CIV AI that burnt the brunt of his units...

took the stack towards Madrid and had a hard time defending Novgorod initially
mehmed1.jpg

beat up the units in Madrid properly and waited a turn to take it. The GG was gifted to Spain and she turned him into a General. We also get a Great Artists that I gifted her
mehmed2.jpg

took Madrid with ease
mehmed3.jpg

took Barcelona defended by 2 units
mehmed4.jpg

and brought the big stack to St.Peter that we can take next turn

GA is over and research is down to 50% thus we do not have steel yet. What do we want to do actually to win the game?

I'm not sure if I'm going crazy or not, but the last screenshot in Qwack's turnset is a screenshot from our RB29c game

I see it, but won't be able to play until Monday earliest, more likely Tuesday. Ozbenno if you are ready I won't mind a swap.

What do we want to do actually to win the game?

Well, Isabella has been hurt pretty bad in this war, so she would not be our opponent in a diplomatic vote and we can count on her for sure.

Darrell

we can probably take all of stalin's cities, with Isabella backing us up and concentrating on food the last 50 or so turns before building the UN, we can win the diplo victory. Or we can just continue moving west and take out HC after stalin for domination :)

Played 10. I took a bunch of screenshots which will not appear in this report due to RL time constraints, but rest assured they are worth thousands of words.

365 - Draft three citeis and micro a bit for food and commerce.

364 - Trade Nationalism to Alex for a wad of cash and war with Montezuma. Sell Music to Monty for 120. Go knock yourself out fellows. At 100% research Steel due in 3.

363 - Take St. Pete.

362 - Heal & Advance.

361 - Steel in, whip Cannon in about 6 cities that have no whip anger and turns invested in Trebs or Cats. Printing Press next but don't invest in it.

360 - Heal & Advance. Pick off stray Knights.

359 - Heal & Advance. Watch fishing nets get ripped.

358 - Take Smolensk and Orenburg. Notice a Grenadier guarding the Horse near Orenburg. Hmm.

357 - That commie moves at me in force and retakes Orenburg. He has five (!) Trebs suicide and live to tell about it at Smolensk, but the city holds. I upgrade an Axe to a Grenadier and move some failry healthy troops in, crossing fingers that he has nothing more hidden from view.

356 - Lose Smolensk. Angry...so very angry. Greece takes an Aztec city or two. Hmm, that's not what I like to see.

355 - Retake Smolensk and Orenburg. They are tenuously held, but troops are on the way.

Well, overall that sucked. I've been playing better AI so long now that I guess I underestimated regular AI. He really moved in on some cities I had taken, mowed through the healthy troops, and feasted on some wounded troops. I should have paused before taking the cities for reinforcements but didn't expect a gassed AI to have such a good swing left. It took a big knock in our power graph, and the WW has me at 20% culture now. I honestly say we just keep taking this cheese heads cites, economy be damned. Oh, and Izzy offers to be our Vassal. No thanks. For some reason I thought we turned off that feature, I sure hate it.

Darrell

OK, a quick review of the position sees Smolensk in some trouble as we've got one defender.

We have 3 unhappy cities, all can be whipped for 2 pop on their current build and are.

Right, time to get into this....

First IBT we lose St Petersburg, which is unfortunate but we are able to take it back straight away :) .

I decide that Yaroslavl will be the next target.

6 trebs retake Smolensk

We take Yaroslavl.

A GG is born in Istanbul. I merge him to the warrior garrisoning here, CR3 upgrade him with double movement and promote to a gren

Moscow is taken.

Printing Press comes in and I select Replaceable Parts.

We should be able to take Smolensk back next turn and then I'd see what Stalin has to offer for peace as WW is an absolute killer.

Huayana is running away tech wise, he has Constitution, Replaceable Parts, Sci Method and Economics on us, where we have Steel on him.

If we were complete bastards, we'd rid the world of Izzy before turning our attentions back to Stalin.

A power graph

There will be some whip anger to overcome as well, I made up for 3 games without the whip in 10 turns

I see the save, but am not at my civ computer. Judging from that power graph Stalin looks spent. I wonder how far we are from Domination.

His culture is choking us pretty bad...I would set research to zero and jack up the culture slider as needed to combat war weariness, and finish him.

Darrell

Oz, good set but you should have gifted that GG to Isabella maybe, remember our variant?

Heh-heh...no harm, no foul :mischief:. That's twice this has happened with our variant, I almost burnt a GE but left him for the player. For some reason this rule is hard to remember while playing ;)
